Chinese vaccine against Covid-19 will be a public good of universal access

Mexico, Jul 23 (Prensa Latina) The Chinese vaccine against Covid-19 will be a public good with universal access, Foreign Minister Wang Yi told her colleagues in Latin America, according to a statement from the Mexican Foreign Ministry.
Last night, Mexico and China co-chaired a virtual meeting of foreign ministers from Latin America and the Caribbean, which aimed to consolidate international cooperation against Covid-19 and jointly face the challenges derived from the pandemic.
The meeting was chaired by Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard, and by Minister Wang.
Their counterparts from Argentina, Barbados, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago and Uruguay also participated, according to the Mexican press release issued at midnight after the meeting ended.
Ebrard thanked the endorsement of China and Latin America and the Caribbean for the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on International Cooperation to guarantee world access to medicines, vaccines and medical equipment to deal with the Covid-19 that was promoted by Mexico and adopted by consensus with the co-sponsorship of 179 countries.
‘The resolution was an important expression of solidarity and political commitment that we must now transform into action. In the coming months, the common priority is the development of treatments and vaccines and the creation of effective mechanisms for their universal distribution, ’said Ebrard.
The Mexican Foreign Secretary stressed that, due to the high level of political dialogue between Presidents Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Xi Jinping, China has facilitated, by an airlift, the transfer of medical equipment and material to protect health and safety of the Mexicans.
For his part, Wang thanked Latin American cooperation during the most difficult time of the pandemic, before giving a presentation on cooperation projects of the People’s Republic of China with countries in Latin America and the Caribbean focused on fighting the pandemic.
Specifically, the Chinese foreign minister stressed that the vaccine developed in his country will be a public good of universal access and that the Asian giant will allocate a loan of one billion dollars to support the access of the nations of the region to the antidote.
The foreign ministers of the Latin American region highlighted the Mexican proposal at the UN to make the vaccine a universal public good and thanked the cooperation offered by China, the note concludes.

México y China copresidieron anoche una reunión virtual de cancilleres de América Latina y el Caribe, que tuvo como objetivo consolidar la cooperación internacional contra la Covid-19 y enfrentar de manera conjunta los retos derivados de la pandemia.
El encuentro fue encabezado por el secretario de Relaciones Exteriores de México, Marcelo Ebrard, y por el ministro Wang.

Por su parte, Wang agradeció la cooperación de América Latina durante la época más difícil de la pandemia, antes de realizar una presentación de proyectos de cooperación de la República Popular China con países de América Latina y el Caribe enfocados en el combate a la pandemia.
En específico, el canciller chino destacó que la vacuna desarrollada en su país será un bien público de acceso universal y que el gigante asiático destinará un préstamo de mil millones de dólares para apoyar el acceso de las naciones de la región al antídoto.
