A glimpse into the elsewhere of an upturning so great that it is unimaginable, where certainties are swept away in an instant and life itself takes on a fragile intensity.

These accounts contain a grain of everything it is possible to foresee of the ultimate fight for freedom and other aspects that could never have been dreamt in our worst nightmares.

They inform, inspire but also warn: we need to recognise the enemies of freedom and self organisation in the paths we tread, blinded by our iconography of the enemy which is also standing right next to us and calls us comrade, albeit hissed through clenched teeth.

PETA Asia’s latest investigation in China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Laos, and Sri Lanka reveals that live-animal markets, in which monkeys, bats, chickens, dogs, cats, and other animals are held in feces-encrusted cages and can be purchased for any purpose—including for their flesh or for the exotic-pet trade—are still operating around the world.

Many of these markets are keeping live animals who are known to be carriers of coronaviruses, flu viruses, and other pathogens transmissible to humans in filthy, cramped cages often stacked on top of each other.

Just last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledged the public health threat that live-animal markets pose and urged countries to suspend the sale of live wild mammals in food markets. This is progress, but it’s not enough. Join us in urging WHO to call for an immediate end to all live-animal markets.

A few notes on upcoming events and ongoing workplace disputes:

On Tuesday 20th, the RMT are holding a Justice for Cleaners demonstration outside Parliament, as part of their ongoing campaign against the privatisation of cleaning.

On Wednesday 21st, there’s another cleaners’ protest, this time organised by grassroots union CAIWU at Facebook’s London offices. They complain “Facebook cleaners have started getting sick – hardly surprising when they have twice as much work as before. Yet Churchill Group just blames [them] for not working ENOUGH.”

On Saturday 24th, a Reclaim Pride march will be held in London.

Sunday 25th is the international day of solidarity with antifascist prisoners, so you might want to do something to mark that date.
