Last weekend in different regions of the state of Oaxaca there were at least 12 murders, the causes seem to be diverse but the forms are not, in all cases they were attacks with firearms.
One of the most serious occurred in the Hermenegildo Galeana Agency, belonging to the municipality of Santiago Tilantongo, where in an ambush on a truck, four people lost their lives and four more were seriously injured, apparently the reason for the attack was an agrarian conflict.
A day earlier, in Teotitlan de Flores Magon, La Cañada municipality, three males were murdered, including a 15-year-old minor. On Saturday night there was another armed attack in the municipality of Union Hidalgo where three men were executed and two people were injured. Petro también ha pedido la organización de una Asamblea Nacional Popular que podría ejercer presión desde la calle sobre el establecimiento corrupto. El Poder Popular podría incluso derrocar el sistema a favor de una Asamblea Constituyente revolucionaria, como se creó en la vecina Venezuela para contrarrestar el parlamento burgués minoritario de élite.

El nuevo presidente inicia su mandato en medio de la expectativa por el giro político que ocurrió en las más recientes elecciones. ¿Qué le espera al país?
Con la llegada de Gustavo Petro a la Casa de Nariño, la izquierda conquista oficialmente las dos máximas instancias del poder político: la Presidencia y el Congreso de la República.
Petro llega al poder con una imagen favorable superior al 60 por ciento; una coalición que, por ahora, le permitiría buen margen de maniobra en el Legislativo; un ambiciosopaquete de reformas, y la esperanza de millones de ciudadanos que le dieron un contundente apoyo en las urnas. Pero la pregunta que muchos se hacen hoy es si será el cambio o más de lo mismo.
Popular National Assembly“Necesitamos más y más organización popular en toda Colombia y el presidente de la República los convoca a organizarse”, dijo el próximo presidente colombiano, quien antes señaló que “hay una parte organizada del pueblo, pero es importante para los días que están por venir aumentar la cantidad y calidad la organización popular”.
Una de las primeras apuestas con las que llega el nuevo gobierno, que causa esperanza, pero a la vez muchos interrogantes, es la llamada “paz total”, que no es otra cosa que el sometimiento a la justicia de la totalidad de los grupos armados ilegales. Para ello, muy seguramente, habrá que tramitar una nueva y polémica ley hecha a la medida de esta nueva negociación.
SEMANA conoció que Petro, tan pronto se posesione, hará oficial la reanudación de los diálogos con el ELN, algo que prometió en campaña. Lo novedoso es que podría decretar un cese bilateral al fuego como un gesto de paz. La noticia resulta atractiva, tratándose de la guerrilla más grande en armas, con 6.000 hombres, pero el escenario no es tan sencillo.
Al frente está un grupo que en el pasado se ha burlado de los diálogos y sigue dedicado a los asesinatos, secuestros, extorsiones, a la minería ilegal y al narcotráfico, entre otras rentas ilícitas, y con Venezuela como refugio.
Ligada a esta ambiciosa, compleja, pero esperanzadora apuesta, el nuevo gobierno llega con una agenda de reformas sociales que implican cambios en materia laboral, pensional y económica, con la que el nuevo mandatario busca la equidad social y el crecimiento económico sostenible, así como proteger los derechos humanos y el medioambiente.
Entre este paquete resaltan la reforma rural integral, la agenda de protección de ambiente, la transición energética, el aumento de las transferencias monetarias a la población vulnerable y la reforma pensional.

Petro has also called for organisation of a Popular National Assembly which could exert pressure from street level on the corrupt establishment. Popular power could even overturn the system in favour of a revolutionary Constituent Assembly, as was created in neighbouring Venezuela to counter the elite minority bourgeois parliament

While the world suffers from the dramatic consequences of unprecedented heat waves, fires and floods from one hemisphere to the other, Total intends to use these billions in ‘superprofits’ to extract more oil and gas.
I’m deeply sickened by yesterday’s announcement: the oil giant Total announced to its shareholders a profit of 5.7 billion dollars in the second quarter. Their triumphant declaration of these profits highlights the moral bankruptcy and the danger that the fossil fuel giants present to all of us.
Total is the worst French multinational in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and is responsible for some of the worst fossil fuel projects on the planet, including the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) and destructive fracking in Patagonia. These profits would not be so outrageously high if Total had not profited from the horrific Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The intensification of climate impacts across the world is no accident, it is largely the manifestation of the limitless greed and power of the fossil fuel industry.
Despite the call of European governments to end the expansion of fossil fuels in the Global South and the International Energy Agency urging for an end to new investments in fossil fuels, Total is leading a gas race in Africa and recently struck billion dollar deals in Algeria and South Africa to extract and burn more of the continent’s fossil fuels
I will quote the words of my colleague Omar Elmawi, coordinator of the #StopEACOP campaign:
“It is appalling that Total Energies continues to reap obscene profits at the expense of people and the planet, even more so in Africa, the continent most vulnerable to climate change. One of the company’s largest projects in Africa, EACOP and associated oilfields, is facing sustained local and global resistance due to the threat it poses to communities and their livelihoods, as well as expected negative impacts on the environment and sensitive ecosystems in Uganda and Tanzania. We can stop EACOP and the wave of destruction it will leave in its wake, if we stop the financial flows to Total. We call on financial institutions not to support Total in this harmful project.”
It’s vital that we continue to disrupt the flow of money to greedy fossil fuel companies like Total from banks and other financial institutions.
While Total is making record profits, many people affected by EACOP in Uganda and Tanzania have still not received the money promised to them.
I was also super shocked to read in the French news, that Total did not pay taxes in France in 2020 and 2021 when public services need this money more than ever!!
Together with the “Never Again” campaign alliance, we’re pushing for public authorities to tax these super profits and diverting the proceeds to support the people who are struggling with high energy costs the most while also accelerating the ecological transition.
