Revolt Across Philadelphia: Black Liberation and the Police Murder of Eddie Irizarry

Report and analysis from Philadelphia on the recent rebellion following the police murder of Eddie Irizarry.

On Monday August 14th 2023, Philadelphia police officer Mark Dial shot and killed Eddie Irizarry as he sat in his car.

Police initially lied saying that Eddie attacked the cop with a knife, but video footage showed that Eddie was shot in mere seconds while seated in his car with the window up.

Following this Dial was suspended for 30 days pending termination. In early September Dial was charged with a number of crimes including murder but the presiding judge would eventually dismiss his charges.

The cops who attended the court date in uniform cheered and celebrated when the charges were dropped.

On September 26th, that same day Eddie’s family and the Party for Socialism and Liberation (alongside Black leftist groups like Black Alliance for Peace and the W.E.B. DuBois Movement School) organized a peaceful march through Center City protesting the decision.

That demonstration dispersed after a couple hours but was followed by looting, initially in Center City before spreading to West, North, and Northeast Philly as the night went on.

The Black liberation movement is alive!

Those who say it’s dead are either racist or not in the street and these revolts are the proof. Although the number of people in the streets was smaller than in 2020, there was widespread revolt across Philadelphia.

Police killed Eddie Irizarry, a non-Black Puerto Rican, and Black people responded with revolt. Similarly in 2020 in Kenosha, WI when Kyle Rittenhouse killed two white people in the midst of a riot against police and later had his charges dropped, Black people rioted in the Bay Area.

These are both examples of a Black consciousness that recognizes anti-Black systems regardless of if they are targeting Black people in a specific instance.

Here in Philly looters and rioters were well prepared.

People were overwhelmingly masked, wearing black clothes, and many were brandishing tools. The looting was organized spontaneously over social media the same day as it took place.

Militants have launched rockets from Gaza into southern and central Israel on Saturday morning, the IDF said.

The brigades and other factions shared videos on Telegram showing two captured IDF positions with dozens of abandoned military vehicles as well as a strike on a military vehicle with an anti-tank guided missile and two drone attacks that targeted a gathering of Israeli troops and a remotely-controlled machine gun.

In a separate statement, the spokesman said that dozens of Israeli soldiers and officers who were captured during the attack are currently in “safe positions and resistance tunnels.

At least forty Israelis and 200 Palestinians have been killed so far. Four fatalities were reported in the town of Kuseife, and another one in the Gderot area.

Hamas militants have reportedly captured so many Israeli soldiers, including high-ranking officers, that the group expects to negotiate a prisoner exchange for all Palestinians held in West Jerusalem’s jails.

What we have in hand will see you set free. The longer fighting continues, the higher the number of prisoners will become.”

Information coming from medical institutions across the country suggests that more than 100 people were wounded. Soroka Hospital in Beersheba said it had been treating 80 patients, some of whom were in a serious condition.

Some 3,000 people, according to the organizers, demonstrated this Saturday in the streets of Granada against the summits that will be held in this city on October 5 and 6 on the occasion of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.

They wanted the march to take place through the streets of the center – from the Parque del Triunfo to the Congress Palace, where the European leaders will be meeting -, something that the Subdelegation rejected for “security reasons”, but the new route that they have proposed, according to their complaint,

It is located “more than four kilometers away from what was initially planned.”

The protest, under the slogan ‘Another Europe is possible’, has had the participation of thirty political organizations, unions and social movements from different parts of Spain, grouped in the so-called ‘Social Summit of Granada’ to demand “other policies “European policies that put the lives of people and the planet at the center”.

The march, which passed without incident, left at 12:30 p.m. from the Fuente de las Batallas with a festive and protesting atmosphere. The participants toured the main artery of the city with banners such as “Your Europe does not represent us” or “We do not eat money” until concluding with the reading of a manifesto in the Parque del Triunfo.

49 leaders, 700 journalists, dozens of bilateral meetings … and no decisions.

The summit, attended by some 50 European leaders, dozens of aides, and legions of journalists, was a fiasco. The meeting failed to make any significant progress in resolving the conflicts on the doorstep of Europe or any other regional problem, Azernews reports.

The sense of fruitlessness of the informal summit culminated when the host country, Spain, canceled a planned press conference at the last minute, the expected highlight of the summit for about 700 journalists.
