I Was taught to Hate my Lesbian Neighbours… They Took me in Anyway (short story)

The summer my parents’ marriage was falling apart, my best friend’s two moms saved me—even though my dad said they were going to Hell.

By …   Illustrations by Vinnie Neuberg…   complete story.

“Hey Penny, is Carrie awake?” I ducked through the screen door, letting it bang shut behind me. The sun had barely crested the Seattle skyline and I was already at my best friends’ house. Her mom, Joy, grabbed a bowl from the cabinets and a box of cereal and set it on the kitchen table. “I’ll go check,” she said. I pulled up a stool and sat down, pouring out the sugary cereal and adding the milk that Penny, Carrie’s other mom, fetched from the fridge. It was the summer before my mother left my dad.

Peru: Mass Feminist Victory Confronts Embedded Patriarchy..Ni Una Menos

not-one-lessArlette was dragged by the hair and strangled by her boyfriend on camera as he screamed.”You’re mine or you’re nobody’s”.

But yet again the Judge refused to convict for ”lack of evidence”.

That was one of a string of horrific attacks on women that swept social media and provoked the massive 500,000 strong feminist demo last August 13th in Peru, supported by cities worldwide.ni_una_menos_5-1

Peru has finally joined the tidal wave of ‘Not One Woman Less’ protests that have inundated Latin and South America. Finally women are confronting the ingrained social license to treat them as sex slaves, private property, servants and veritable punch-bags in the service of runaway macho hubris. “But mainly we are carrying a message of hope and solidarity, because we think Gazans want that most of all.”

She said she had high hopes that the flotilla would not be stopped by the Israeli navy and reach the destination. Continue reading “Gaza-bound flotilla with 22 Women sets sail from Barcelona to Defy Israeli Blockade”

Guerilla Gays Triumph in new Ireland.

Oisin McKenna takes a look at queer activism today and republican activism in the past in his new show Gays Against the Free State. James Beggan sat down with him to find out what’s what.

shared from rabble.ie with thanks          Okay so, you’ve done a show at Fringe before – GRINDR – a love story, and you’ve done Write/Performer/Salesman, both back in 2013. Is this your first show since then?Image result for Gay ireland

Yeah this is my first show since then, so it’s been three years, the show that I’m making now took way longer to make than those ones before. I felt like with the other two shows I did, they were about my own life whereas this isn’t at all. The subject matter is quite dense and I needed to know a lot more about it so it took way longer to make. It’s really different as well so it was harder to make, yeah it took a while.”Image result for Gay ireland

Did you have many people helping out with this one compared to the last one. Are there more moving parts?

Yeah definitely, way more. In terms of the cast, there are five people in this whereas with my first show was just me and the second one had two people. Then there’s the bigger production team as well, production manager and stage manager, more design people. Before it would’ve been quite small with maybe six people on the whole thing.

This in general is bigger, my other work felt quite intimate, introverted kind of, but this is really maximalist. There are parts that are self-consciously tacky, any time i had an instinct to go bigger or make a point in a more confrontational or inflammatory way, I did that.” Continue reading “Guerilla Gays Triumph in new Ireland.”

Abuse is not always ‘Visible’ as Megan Short was Punished by Death for Realizing

by  on Feminist Current.. shared with thanks

‘On August 6, Short’s planned moving day, she was found shot to death alongside her three children, her husband, and their dog in the family’s Pennsylvania home. A “murder/suicide note” was found “near one of the deceased adults,

Megan Short, 33, posted a request to Facebook, asking for help moving on August 6. Only weeks earlier, she had commented under an article posted by a friend, saying she was leaving her husband.

The article, written by Leigh Stein, was titled, “He didn’t hit me. It was still abuse.” In it, Stein explained that, while working at a diner, her boyfriend made her shower twice a day, so she “wouldn’t smell like French fries after work” and so that she could shave her entire body, “or else he wouldn’t touch me.”

He also told Stein she “wasn’t sexy” and that, therefore, he needed to sleep with other women. Stein didn’t see her relationship as abusive, at the time, because her abuse was invisible — there were no bruises to prove it. “I didn’t know what to name what I couldn’t see,” she writes.

Like so many other women, Stein had learned that red flags were, in fact, “romance.” She writes, “I felt like I was in a movie — how quickly we moved in together and isolated ourselves from friends and family, because all we needed was each other.” Women are groomed to become victims of abuse, in this way.
