A large force of Garda and council workers were deployed at 3.30am today, International Women’s Day, to clear Occupy Dame Street (ODS) camp. The camp was completely demolished in the course of the eviction, campers intimidated and their personal property stolen.
This was a level of force way out of proportion with the numbers in the camp (about 15 people) and stands in contrast with the lack of resources put into investigating what happened at Anglo, the collapse of which has left a debt of 26,000 Euro on every single person in the country.
The small Garda team ‘investigating’ what happened at Anglo only includes one forensic accountant. As far as anyone can tell they have yet to get into the computers that were encrypted and which the bank has refused to hand over the passwords for. This certainly tells us whose interests those in power protect and that the Garda will ‘just follow orders’ even if they are individually included amongst the 99% of us who have been screwed over.
Media coverage of the eviction suggests that it was a fairly low key affair with an overwhelming number of Garda (around 100) compared to campers (about 15) but commentary from the campers and a video interview published by the Irish Times suggests that a significant level of physical intimidation & force was used by Garda. Campers talked of pick axes being used to break into structures while they were still inside and of the seizure of mobile phones, lap tops, clothes, minutes & contact books and even bicycles that were chained on the square. This happened without warning, while people were sleeping. One of the campers said of the police that “they came like volatile bullies & terrorists .. they behaved like animals”
Updated 14.30: In a second video interview from this morning two women from ODS talked about how the Garda had arrived wearing balaclava’s, didn’t poduce the court order until they had dragged everyone off the site and had twisted their arms and stamped on their hands when they attempted to sit on the street. Just before lunch a small group were forcibly prevented from putting up tents. A number of witnesses have said that last night some of the Garda appeared to be carrying guns.
Latest UPDATEGARDAÍ IN DUBLIN city centre are preventing the protest group who had camped outside the Central Bank’s headquarters from 8 October until this morning from erecting any more tents at the property.
The camp was dismantled by dozens of gardaí at around 3.30am today and the area was subsequently cleaned by Dublin City Council workers.
(en) The world of environmental direct action has remained a secretive one, until now. Emily James spent over a year embedded in activist groups such as Climate Camp and Plane Stupid to document their clandestine activities. With unprecedented access, Just do It takes you on an astonishing journey behind the scenes of a community of people who refuse to sit back and allow the destruction of their world. Torpedoing the tired clichés of the environmental movement, Just Do It introduces you to a powerful cast of mischievous and inspiring characters who put their bodies in the way; they super-glue themselves to bank trading floors, blockade factories and attack coal power stations en-masse, despite the very real threat of arrest. Their adventures will entertain, illuminate and inspire.
Anonymous hacks thousands of credit card numbers from security firm and cyphers money to charity.
Doing whatever it takes to bring some perceived justice back in the world…
Looks like the hacking group ‘Anonymous‘ has been back at it with its latest disclosure that it has stolen thousands of credit card numbers belonging to clients of US based security think tank Stratfor with as much a million dollars to date being donated to charity.
At present Anonymous is boasting that it has stolen Stratfor’s confidential client list, which includes outlets like Apple, the US Air Force and mined it for more than 4000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.
To date ‘Anonymous’ has posted a small slice of the 200 gigabytes worth of sensitive client information, going so far as to go on twitter to taunt that more outlets have been earmarked in days to come.
Strike at the Heart of the Beast!
According to ‘Anonymous’ it was able to attain access to client credit card information because Stratfor failed to encrypt the codes, an embarrassing snafu for an outlet that’s in the business of security.
Hours after publishing what it claimed was Stratfor’s client list, Anonymous tweeted a link to encrypted files online with names, phone numbers, emails, addresses and credit card account details.
‘Not as many as you expected? Worry not, fellow pirates and robin hoods. These are just the ‘A’s,’ read a message posted online that encouraged readers to download a file of the hacked information.
What is particularly distressing to clients at present is the extent of information that ‘Anonymous’ has been able to steal and what some of the notes on various emails may have to say. Something that could prove to be very embarrassing as well as incriminatory given the sensitive information that an outlet like the US Airforce would be privy to.
This evening ‘Anonymous’ went online with images of receipts of charitable donations it already has begun to administer.

One member of ‘anonymous’ went so far as to go on twitter using the handlebar, AnonymousAbu alleging that more than 90,000 credit cards from law enforcement, the intelligence community and journalists — ‘corporate/exec accounts of people like Fox’ News — had been hacked and used to make more than one million dollars worth of Christimas donations to entities that include for instance the Red Cross, CARE, Save the Children.Wishing everyone a “Merry LulzXMas” – a nod to its spin-off hacking group Lulz Security – Anonymous also posted a link on Twitter to a site containing the email, phone number and credit number of a US Homeland Security employee.
After visiting 94 offices on Capitol Hill Tuesday, unemployed demonstrators targeted a Newt Gingrich fundraising event on Wednesday night. The hotel, like many of the representatives’ offices, locked its doors to the demonstrators, who are in D.C. with a group called “Take Back the Capitol.” Wednesday night the demonstrators called for Gingrich to discuss his jobs plans with the “99% outside” protesting, rather than the “1% who are contributing thousands to his campaign,” according to a press release sent out by organizers. Gingrich never came out.
“Take Back the Capitol” is made up of “unemployed and underemployed people from every state, students, community activists, union members, healthcare advocates, and travelers from Occupy sites from coast to coast,” according to the group’s website. Organized labor has helped coordinate three days’ worth of Capitol Hill protests under that banner.
The protesters are in D.C. as Congress is expected to vote on extending unemployment insurance to 2.2 million unemployed workers who face losing their benefits if the legislation is not passed.
Today, Senate Republicans blocked a vote on President Obama’s nomination to lead the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Congress created the bureau, which was the brain child of Massachussets Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren, during last year’s financial reforms. But Republicans have worked to strip its authority ever since, and have vowed not to confirm a director for it. Obama is weighing a recess appointment, which would circumvent the Senate vote.
Meanwhile, many of the demonstrators are using cameras on their mobile phones to upload images of members of Congress ignoring them. In the video below, Congressman Joe Walsh, who represents Illinois’ 8th District, was caught on video fleeing from his constituents. “We’ve been waiting a few hours to speak with you congressman,” a woman is heard saying as Walsh races down a set of stair. “You can at least acknowledge us,” the woman says once she realizes the congressman is fleeing.
California Rep. Elton Gallegly, a Republican who represents most of Ventura County and inland Santa Barbara Couny, at least acknowledged the demonstrators with a “Merry Christmas,” but he then ran quickly behind locked doors.
“Even when one of his constituents presented herself and tried to talk to him, he just kept saying ‘Merry Christmas,’” Esperanza Arrizon, a youth leader with Good Jobs LA, wrote about the event. According to her, before the congressman ran behind closed doors he did have one question for demonstrators, “I just donated 750 gifts to needy children, how many of you can say you did that?”
The event is being organized by several community groups by the American Dream Movement, a partnership between several groups including MoveOn.org, SEIU and other progressive, labor, and faith-based organizations.

For a century the castle above the mountains of Les Planes has been in disuse, abandoned and detoriorating, from one owner to another without any visible intention as it was started as a sanatorium never to become complete. During the Civil Warit was used by the anti-fascist resistance as a hospital, where George Orwell was also interned.
