They are not squatters: they are Nazis

alternative Housing Office Madrid
On 18 August, the neo-Nazi group Social Republican Movement (MSR) announced on social media their entry into an abandoned building in Madrid’s Tetuan barrio and fheir intention to turn it into a social center for  ‘those in need’  provided they were white and of Spanish nationality. .

Opening a such center in the district with the largest migrant population of Madrid and the opposition it generated among neighbors attracted media attention, especially after the massive demonstration against held the same day as opening of the center, on August 30.

Since then, it has been common to see the press referred to the center as a squatted buildingand members of the neo-Nazi group as “squatters” in an error which is then repeated in social networks. The center is equated with the squatting movement, which has always had among its main objectives the recovery of abandoned homes to become social centers and buildings.

Don’t expect to see a bullfight when you trip to Barcelona, the last stadium is closed and the ”sport” banned. In fact for years it was mainly kept going by the tourist industry.

The popular bumper sticker in Madrid is the bull, representing, for the Catalans,  cruel bullying disguised as ‘heroic’ sexist posturing.

Barcelona  cars on the other hand feature the Catalan donkey, symbolizing just a nice but stubborn animal, and maybe the ability to laugh at themselves.

In San Sebastian of the Kings, (real name Donostia in Basque) the battle against bullfighting is in full swing.  Last week there was a new demo against, which was attacked by pro-bullfight thugs, sending one girl to hospital. (see report below) Continue reading “Bullfights used to impose Patriarchy and Nationalism”

Mexican Judge Departs From Script, Turns Monsanto’s Mexican Dream Into Legal Nightmare

Through a combination of back-channel lobbying, opaque political funding and revolving-door politics, the multinational agrochemical and biotechnology corporation has subverted, corrupted and infiltrated the elected governments of countries around the world, from the smallest and poorest to the biggest and richest.

However, if recent events in Europe and Latin America are any indication, the tide may well be subtly turning against the interests of Monsanto and its fellow GMO oligopolies and in the favor of independent food growers and consumers.
