100 Days in Prison and a Lawyer Shot Dead: Turkey Still Won’t Let Our Journalist Go

By Jake Hanrahan Dec 5, 2015 * VICE News journalist and fixer Mohammed Rasool has now been held for 100 days without trial in Turkey.

* The VICE News team’s Turkish lawyer was shot dead in the street one week ago.

* The detention of journalists continues unabated — two have just been jailed on the same baseless terrorism charges that VICE News was accused of.

Our first impression of Adana Kurkculer prison was, as would be expected, a bad one. Several layers of high-walled security doors peeled open as we were driven in under armed guard, our hands cuffed in the back of a military vehicle.

Less than a month after it was revealed that the UK is planning to drop feminism from the politics A-level, every 16-year-old in Sweden is being given a copy of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s call to arms, We Should All Be Feminists

The essay, adapted from Adichie’s award-winning TED talk of the same name, is being distributed in Swedish to high-school students by the Swedish Women’s Lobby and publisher Albert Bonniers. Launching the project at Norra Real high school in Stockholm this week, they said they hoped the book would “work as a stepping stone for a discussion about gender equality and feminism”. Reports Noisey, the group shot the video (above) in the post-apocalyptic gloom of Bansky’s famous art installation which took over the UK last September. “Refugees In” features a dark confusion of rioting,police brutality and rebellion, making controversial statements like “Fuck the police. Like we are in Greece.”

Nadya Tolokonnikova shared in the interview that the debut performance was liberating for the group, as it was the band’s “first organized, legal concert” and they were finally free to play their music withoutfear of persecution.

The March against sexist violence overflows Madrid

At least 200,000 people, according to the organization, collapsed the center of Madrid, in an unprecedented historic march to demand that the fight against gender violence is a matter of State, as was the motto of the protest. The demonstration, called by more than 400 feminist groups around the state, walked the streets of the capital from the Ministry of Health to the entrance of the square of Spain, where the final communiqué was read.
