China: Take The Streets. Rioting spreads.

Wave of Violent Protests, Rioting, Bombings Hits China; Expect More Riots When China’s Credit Bubble Pops, Exposing Mountains of Fraud Protests are not uncommon in China. However, most protests have been in rural areas where farmers have had their land stolen by bureaucrats and property developers.

The last few weeks have been different. Several large urban areas have seen protests against corruption. A wave of violent unrest in urban areas of China over the past three weeks is testing the Communist Party’s efforts to maintain control over an increasingly complex and fractious society, forcing it to repeatedly deploy its massive security forces to contain public anger over economic and political grievances.

In the latest disturbance, armed police were struggling to restore order in a manufacturing town in southern China Monday after deploying tear gas and armored vehicles against hundreds of migrant workers who overturned police cars, smashed windows and torched government buildings there the night before. The protests, which began Friday night in Zengcheng, in the southern province of Guangdong, followed serious rioting in another city in central China last week, plus bomb attacks on government facilities in two other cities in the past three weeks, and ethnic unrest in the northern region of Inner Mongolia last month.

Antigovernment protests have become increasingly common in China in recent years, according to the government’s own figures, but they have been mainly confined to rural areas, often where farmers have been thrown off their land by property developers and local officials. The latest unrest, by contrast, involves violent protests from individuals and large crowds in China’s cities, where public anger is growing over issues including corruption and police abuses.

Protests in China have been occurring at an increasing rate. This is in spite of the fact the Chinese economy has been growing at 10% a year for a decade. What happens when China’s growth slows to 4%?

90% of captured Taliban were civilians

Ninety Percent of Petraeus’s Captured “Taliban” Were Civilians
By Gareth Porter*

WASHINGTON, Jun 12, 2011 (IPS) – During his intensive initial round of media interviews as commander in Afghanistan in August 2010, Gen. David Petraeus released figures to the news media that claimed spectacular success for raids by Special Operations Force. Only now it  emerges that over 90% of those arrested were later found to be innocent.

The deceptive nature of those statistics, as now revealed by U.S. military data, raises anew the question of whether the statistics released by Petraeus on killing of alleged Taliban were similarly skewed.

Comment…”These are the heroes of the computer games, and everything was done to create a false macho mystique around the falsified reports. Logically we can extrapolate that 90% of the over 2000 people announced killed by the wonderful Special Operations Forces in the period were also innocent! The true story of the horrors of these boys rampaging with impunity, against the equally brutal Taliban,  has yet to be told”  The Free

by La Hainehttp://www.lahaine.org/index.php?p=54318 11 Jun 2011

IMF: Raping women and Looting countries

Strauss-Kahn: a metaphor for IMF practices. Estamos desolados.

Leonardo Boff One might think that it is a tragedy that the head of the IMF, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, succumbed to his vice, the obsessive search for perverse sex. Running naked after a Black maid in suite 2806 of the Sofitel Hotel in New York City, he grabbed and forced her to have sex. The details were thoroughly described by the New York District Attorney. For the sake of decency, I will not repeat them. It was not a tragedy for him: it was just one more person in this world whom he has victimized. Afterwards, he got dressed, and went directly to the airport. What is funny is that he left his cell phone in the hotel suite, and because of that, the police were able to detain him, after he had already boarded the plane. The tragedy was not what happened to him, but to the victim, which no-one wants to know. Her name is Nifissatou Diallo, an African, Moslem, from Guinea, a widow and mother of a 15 year old daughter. The police found her hiding behind a cupboard, crying and vomiting, traumatized by the violence suffered at the hands of the hotel guest, whose name she did not even know. Most of the French media, cynically and openly machista, tried to hide the facts, claiming even possible entrapment of the future socialist candidate for President of the French Republic. …….Strauss-Kahn is a metaphor for the present neoliberal system. It sucks the blood of countries in crisis, such as Iceland, Ireland, Greece, Portugal, and now Spain, as was previously done with Brazil and the countries of Latin America and of Asia. To save the banks and enable repayment of debts, it devastated societies, forced workers out of their jobs, privatized public goods, cut salaries, delayed retirement ages, mandated longer work hours.  All because of capital.  The enforcer of these world policies is, among others, the IMF, of which Strauss-Kahn was the central figure. What he did to Nafissatou Diallo is a metaphor for what he was doing to the countries in financial difficulties. He deserves jail not just for the sexual violence against the hotel maid, but even more, for the economic rape of the people, that he committed from the IMF. Read full article HERE  http://cinabrio.over-blog.es/
