There’s an increase of 873% in India’s rape crime rate. Moreover, in 20 years, 20% of women will have been exterminated from India subject to all forms of gender specific violence. [Also browse our newspaper log]

The government’s first response was — stony silence!  It pretended it didn’t hear!

62 Yr Old Albatross Has 35th Chick, Flies 3 Million Miles

wisdomTracked by scientists since 1956, a Laysan albatross dubbed “Widsom” has hatched a healthy chick at the tender age of 62. The (apparently) elderly bird has now successfully given birth for the sixth consecutive year and is assumed to have parented at least 35 chicks over the course of her preternaturally long lifetime. And what might be even more impressive is the fact that Wisdom has flown an awe inspiring three million miles (4.8 million kilometers) since she was first branded.

The hatching was documented by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist Pete Leary who is working at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Over the course of her life, Wisdom has worn out five bird bands since being tagged by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Chandler Robbins in 1956.

Wildlife Extra reports:

Bruce Peterjohn, chief of the North American Bird Banding Program at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Laurel, MD, said Wisdom has likely raised at least 30 to 35 chicks during her breeding life, though the number may well be higher because experienced parents tend to be better parents than younger breeders. Albatross lay only one egg a year, but it takes much of a year to incubate and raise the chick. After consecutive years in which they have successfully raised and fledged a chick, the parents may take the occasional next year off from parenting. Wisdom is known to have nested in 2006 and then every year since 2008.big mama

“As Wisdom rewrites the record books, she provides new insights into the remarkable biology of seabirds,” Peterjohn said. “It is beyond words to describe the amazing accomplishments of this wonderful bird and how she demonstrates the value of bird banding to better understand the world around us. If she were human, she would be eligible for Medicare in a couple years yet she is still regularly raising young and annually circumnavigating the Pacific Ocean. Simply incredible.”

Incredible, indeed. Wisdom has logged an average of 50,000 miles per year since becoming an adult — which adds up to at least two to three million miles. Or, as Wildlife Extra calculates, “that’s 4 to 6 trips from the Earth to the Moon and back again with plenty of miles to spare.”

Whoa.

It is targeted at the EU Spring Summit, where leaders from across the continent will assemble on the 14th and 15 to strengthen the European Council’s response to the crisis.
The response to date from economic and political elites in the European Union amounts to a massive attack on welfare, social rights and democracy. This has been achieved by undermining democracy, reflected in EU policies including the imposition of austerity, demands for deep cuts in social spending, attempts to weaken labour laws and the roll back of hard earned labour rights…. Occupy the Plaza 2013.. starting already

0010en  español abajo One hundred people have spent the night in the  camp in Plaza Catalunya whiuch was decided on last night at the Plaza Sant Jaume de Barcelona, outside the headquarters of the Government, where some 600 people gathered to protest against political corruption in a call made on social networks.

One hundred of them joined the proposed overnight in Plaza Catalunya, which was emblematic of 15M movement born in 2011, and some of them have installed tents in an initiative that has the support of the “BCN Camp Plaform “. The 15M Take the Streets movement weny round the world and led to Occupy in the US.

At 11.00 am this morning a meeting was convened in the same square where the demonstrations concentrates to discuss the coming days to hold accountable politicians for corruption cases.

Most of the PP government, including the prime Minister Rajoy have been caught with their ‘hands in the till’ but refuse to resign.

This afternoon in a demonstration has  been called that will start from Plaza Catalunya to the PP headquarters in Barcelona.

Un centenar de personas han pasado la noche en la plaza Cataluña de Barcelona, que el movimiento de “indignados” tomó durante meses en 2011, en protesta por los casos de corrupción política destapados en los últimos días.

La acampada en la plaza Cataluña se decidió anoche en la plaza Sant Jaume de Barcelona, frente a la sede de la Generalitat, donde unas 600 centenar-personas-duerme-Barcelona-corrupcion_EDIIMA20130202_0069_4personas se concentraron en protesta por la corrupción política, en una convocatoria lanzada desde las redes sociales.

Un centenar de los concentrados se sumaron a la propuesta de pasar la noche en la plaza Cataluña, que fue emblema del movimiento 15M nacido en 2011, y algunos de ellos han instalado tiendas de campaña en una iniciativa que cuenta con el apoyo de la plataforma “Acampada BCN”.

A las 11,00 horas de esta mañana se ha convocado una asamblea en la misma plaza en la que los concentrados debatirán las movilizaciones para los próximos días para exigir responsabilidades a los políticos por los casos de corrupción.

Se ha convocado para esta tarde en las redes sociales una manifestación que partirá desde la plaza Cataluña hacia la sede del PP en Barcelona.
