The environmental situation in the Mar Menor, Europe’s biggest salt water lagoon, continues to be worrying. This Friday thousands of dead fish and crustaceans have been found again and the Cartagena City Council has closed nine beaches to facilitate cleaning.
Specifically, the red flag has been raised and access to the beaches of La Gola, Playa Paraíso, Playa Honda, Caravaning, Mar de Cristal, Islas Menores, Puerto Bello and Cala del Pino and Los Alemanes has been limited.
From the Consistory, residents are requested not to approach these areas to facilitate cleaning tasks and avoid any risk due to the passage of machinery.
This is the fifth consecutive day in which dead fish appear on beaches in the area, which has led to criticism from the opposition towards the regional government of Fernando López Miras, from the Popular Party, which has initiated an investigation into the causes, among complaints by the opposition and environmentalists of the deterioration of this natural area.

Moreover, it is meant to be far away and beyond the attention of the citizenry.
The military-industrial complex keeps learning and profiting. Now it’s remote warfare instead of boots on the ground.

A quick round-up of ongoing disputes and upcoming events:
The joint PCS/UVW strike action by outsourced workers demanding equal treatment at Royal Parks started on Monday the 16th and is set to run till the 30th August. You can donate to their strike fund here, and email their bosses in support of the strike using a tool here. In other PCS news, DVLA workers are striking over Covid safety through the whole of August. Another long-running strike continues in Bexley, where bin workers are still on strike over pay and victimisation issues, and have previously warned that the dispute could stretch out into October.
Also, pretty much all the health unions are running pay ballots of some kind at the moment, so those are important to vote in for anyone who works in that sector. See Health Workers United for more on that.

At least 18 militants from the…Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were killed on Tuesday in an airstrike by a drone near the town of Sinjar in northern Iraq, a Kurdish security source said.
The airstrike took place in the afternoon when a Turkish drone bombed a school building used by PKK members as a clinic in a village near the town of Sinjar, some 100 km west of Nineveh’s provincial capital Mosul, Luqman Gally, commander of the Kurdish Peshmerga security forces in the area, told Xinhua.

The airstrike is the second in two successive days, as an aircraft bombed a vehicle in the old market in the center of Sinjar, killing Saeed Hassan Saeed, a leading figure in the Sinjar Protection Units (YBS), also known as Shingal (Sinjar) Resistance Units, and two of his aides, along with wounding two of Saeed’s sons at the scene, according to Gally on Monday.
The YBS is a Yazidi militia formed in Iraq in 2007 to protect the Yazidi community in Iraq….
