The sentence of the Superior Court of Justice of Castilla-La Mancha has put an end to the claims of Quantum Minería S.L. to carry out a rare earth mining mega-project in Campo de Montiel (Ciudad Real). This project, intentionally divided into several phases to avoid a strategic environmental assessment, would have affected 17,330 hectares of land with high agricultural and natural value, including the controversial “Matamula” and “Remataminas” concessions.

The anticipated impacts mobilized broad social sectors, including not only environmental organizations such as Ecologistas en Acción but also the agricultural sector and other rural entities. Thus, five agro-livestock companies presented themselves as co-defendants to defend the negative Environmental Impact Statement issued by the Junta de Castilla-La Mancha in October 2017.
