The chaos that will accompany the return of the Trump administration represents an opportunity as well as a challenge. This is a chance to assert an autonomous pole of organizing, carrying forward the lessons of 2020 and the movement against Cop City while continuing the fight against patriarchal violence, white supremacy, and colonialism.

We need to welcome new participants into these struggles and foster a revolutionary perspective that can orient us through the challenges ahead. No amount of internet activity could substitute for gathering face to face. The most important battles ahead will not be fought online, but in the streets of our communities.

January 18 was observed as the Day of the Forest Defender on the two-year anniversary of the murder of Tortuguita in Weelaunee Forest.

A host of workshops were organised across the US, distributing literature teaching security culture, digital security, protest safety and first aid, direct action, reproductive autonomy, forms of organization including affinity groups, and other skills that may be relevant in the years to come.

The decentralized Festival of Resistance aims to strategize about how to confront the Trump agenda in your region, a chance to expand rapid response networks for community defense and mutual aid.

It’s up to local communities to decide what best fits local context. The important thing is to create a space and get connected ahead of the next round of struggles—a space where people can hone their skills and begin to think of themselves as a collective force.

No matter who Trump’s administration targets—whether immigrants, Palestine solidarity organizers, sex workers, schoolteachers, trans people, environmentalists, or people seeking abortions—we must show that we will love and protect one another.

If we all pull together, showing everyone who wants to resist that there are movements that they can join, we can begin to build the strength that we will need to overcome the challenges ahead.

Let’s take a partial look at our collective histories of struggle…

In 1919, in Cardiff, Liverpool and East London racists targeted Chinese, Somali, West Indian (Caribbean), Malaysian, Egyptian and other racialized residents, many of whom were British colonial troops stationed or demobilized in Britain, the racists also targeted their partners and spouses who were often white women. In response, at various intervals in Cardiff groups of whites that had formed lynch mobs found themselves in shootouts with the racialized people they tried to target.

In 1948, in Liverpool the National Union of Seamen strived to keep Black people out of work, boasting that “we have been successful in changing ships from coloured to white, and in many instances in persuading masters and engineers that white men should be carried in preference to coloured.” During an extended period of attack, Black sailors armed themselves to stave off attempted massacres by mobs of whites either in uniform or in plain clothes intent on destroying them, the lodgings they stayed in and the clubs they frequented.

Four anti-fascists outside of Stratford magistrates court, shortly after all charges against them in connection them preventing a busload of migrants from being transported to a prison barge were dropped.

These four devilish anti-fascists were arrested in May after heroically preventing the authorities from transporting a busload of asylum seekers to a prison barge.

Yesterday, all charges against them were dropped! Thus ends the second trial of the 50+ arrestees from the action and so far it’s anti-fascists 2 authorities 0!

May 2024: the good people of Peckham, south London, using their bodies to physically prevent a busload of asylum seekers from being transported to a prison barge.

No reasonable person would characterize another person’s desperate attempt to flee dangerous conditions and find safe refuge a crime. Logically then, UK authorities can’t be considered to be reasonable.

Because this past spring they decided to round up a busload of asylum seekers in Peckham, south London to cart them off to a prison barge!

Luckily, the asylum seekers’ friends and neighbours were not having it and as soon as the bus was full and ready to head to prison, dozens of them physically surrounded the bus, preventing it from going anywhere.

This led to a tense stand-off with police but in the end, the asylum seekers were released and able to return to their homes and the bus drove off empty.

This is not the first time Peckham has rolled deep to rescue refugees. Nearly a year prior, a literal flash mob appeared to surround a van and force immigration cops to release a man they were attempting to deport.

Leave it to the Met, however, to add a sour note to what should have been a good-news story by fabricating charges and arresting 44 of the people who defended their friends and neighbours.

The Defence Fund stepped in to help pay for legal defence of our comrades, and so far the results have been excellent!

The first five defendants had all charges dropped against them minutes after their trial began, when prosecutors failed to submit any evidence to support the charges they were arrested on!

Resisting Brazil’s Proposed Law #490/2007 to Block and Seize Indigenous Lands … Pt/ Esp/ Eng

Strongly supported by the agro-industrial sector, Law #490/2007 provides for several changes in the territorial rights of Indigenous Peoples as guaranteed by Brazil’s Constitution.

The law applies the “time limit thesis” (marco temporal) to the question of demarcating Indigenous territories.

This fringe racist legal theory holds that Brazil’s Indigenous Peoples have the right only to lands they happened to occupy at the time of the promulgation of the Brazilian Constitution (October 1988), and not any that were stolen from them before that date.

If adopted, the marco temporal standard would likely prevent the demarcation of any additional Indigenous territories (237 territories are currently in legal limbo), while also placing at risk the 441 fully demarcated and registered Indigenous territories.

Furthermore, Law #490/2007 would open Indigenous territories to predatory activities, including mining, ranching, commercial agribusiness, and dam construction.

It goes so far as to allow the State to “retake” lands if there are significant “alterations of cultural traits” within Indigenous communities.

At least 43 more migrants drown in shipwreck off Tunis, says Red Crescent Eng /Esp

At least 43 migrants drowned in a shipwreck off Tunis while trying to cross the Mediterranean from Libya to Italy, while 84 others were rescued, the Tunisian Red Crescent told Reuters on Saturday.

The ship had set sail from Zuwara, on Libya’s northwest coast, carrying migrants from Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea and Bangladesh, the humanitarian organization said.

In recent months, there have been several drowning incidents off the coast of Tunisia, with an increase in the frequency of attempts to cross into Europe from Tunisia and Libya into Italy as the weather has improved.

“The navy rescued 84 migrants and another 43 drowned on a ship that left Zuwara in Libya for Europe,” said Mongi Slim, a Red Crescent official.

Hundreds of thousands of people have made the dangerous crossing of the Mediterranean in recent years, many of them fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa and the Middle East.

Arrivals in Italy, one of the main migrant routes to Europe, had declined in recent years, but the numbers rose again in 2021.

Almost 19,800 immigrants have arrived since the beginning of the year compared to just over 6,700 in the same period last year, figures from the Italian Interior Ministry show.
