Map of Shame: Mass Graves of Fascist-Catholic Regime still not Opened

Map: All the known mass graves of the hundreds of thousands of victims of the fascist uprising and the Franco regime.

Spain has done little to give closure to the atrocities perpetrated during the dictatorship. Instead, as Alex W. Palmer explains in a recent article, Spain implemented a political agreement known as the “Pact of Forgetting.” 200,000 people were executed in the dictatorship—mostly by the fascist forces, still more died during the bombings of cities and towns in Spain, and some 370,000 were held in concentration camps.

Spain has exhumed the remains of only 9,000 victims of the long fascist-catholic regime in the last 19 years. A report urges the government to formalize an urgent plan to recover up to 25,000 more bodies in the next five years. This will depend on whether a far right coalition wins the April 2019 election.

In Paterna, some of the bones of 100 victims found in graveyard 112 are cracked, which could mean that the people executed at the site were tortured. According to the AP’s Parra, archaeologists have asked authorities to launch a criminal investigation into the victims’ violent deaths.

It’s not the first time I say it: there are people who only need one book, the Bible to explain the world (…) To me, it happens to me, I must confess it, with ”The Echo of the Steps” the memoirs of Juan García Oliver. An anarchist waiter who arrived at the Minister of Justice in the middle of the war.

”Durruti and I went to the request of President Lluís Companys. It was surrounded by army officers. When he saw us, opening his arms, he exclaimed: “My children, people of the CNT, today you are the only hope of Catalonia! Forget everything and save the freedoms of our people! “

– Is that all, Companys? I said. I thought you wanted us here to give us weapons.

-I do not have any weapons to give you. I just wanted to wish you lots of luck! ” he replied

(note: The Catalan president Luis Companys later ran out of luck himself and was executed by a fascist terrorist firing squad)

This is one of the hundred of priceless scenes in The Echo of the Steps, one of the books that have influenced my brain more powerfully. They are the memories of a Catalan anarchist.

Barcelona begins its Republican Spring, while territories such as Pamplona or Palma de Mallorca extend their activities around the date
Some city councils have already announced that they will hang the tricolor from the municipal buildings, despite the sanctions they may have to assume

This Saturday marks 87 years since the monarchy of Alfonso XIII came to an end to open a new stage. The Second Republic was proclaimed progressively on April 14, 1931 in the squares of the town halls that rushed to hoist the tricolor flag.

The republican project materialized in a period of eight years and that culminated in the end imposed by the uprising of the military and the victory of the national side. In Puerto Rico, a humanitarian catastrophe continues to unfold 12 day after Hurricane Maria struck the island. Over the weekend, the Pentagon said the percentage of Puerto Rico’s 3.5 million residents without access to clean drinking water rose to 55 percent. Only 5 percent of the island has electricity, while food and fuel remain scarce and about half of the island’s roads are impassable. The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) is one of the most important events of the early 20. century – and so much is ignored and so many lies circulate about it.

The reason is simple. In Spain the different factions of the ruling class have a lot to hide and the survivors are passing away. The existence of a self-organised working class, mainly influenced by anarchism, its courage and lucidity and the role that they played should be hidden at any cost.
