Monsanto has been forced to abandon it’s ‘bully and bribe’ campaign to implant GM Crops in Europe, at least for now, but In Spain it has already succeeded in introducing GM Maize with Glyphosate (Roundup) production, and now local councils have been persuaded to spray roads, paths, railways and waterways with deadly Glyphosate to ‘‘eliminate excess vegetation» and ‘‘reduce fire risk».. Ecologists in Action and WWF Guadalajara reported » indiscriminate fumigation» with herbicides , such as glyphosate on the roadsides of the province, in a campaign conducted by the Department of Development in autumn, which is nonsense as plant species die back anyway

Environmental organizations have been aware of the 2013 fall campaign carried out by the Department of Development on regional roads in our province, without even safeguarding those sections passing through protected natural areas. So our environmental organizations require «competent authorities  to prohibit  the spraying of road margins with herbicides and » only mechanically remove » the grass that may affect road safety or as a preventive measure against fire .

We believe that the application of herbicides on roadsides is » arbitrary» and » unjustifiable » and denounce that in recent years there has been «massive» spraying with products containing glyphosate , a nonselective broad spectrum herbicide. »

According to toxicity studies , the glyphosate-based herbicides are »highly toxic to animals and humans and cause genetic damage , reproductive disorders , sperm abnormalities and are carcinogenesis » .

Also, WWF and Ecologists in Action of Guadalajara warn that glyphosate used in the spraying is «highly toxic » that » is absorbed through the soil , persists for months and is very soluble in water , which increases their danger when entering ecosystems by surface runoff . «Glyphosate-on-Modified-Monsanto-Logo

Regarding the usually cited justification for spraying to kill weeds to improve road visibility and reduce wildfire risks , environmentalists consider arguments that are «false » and «pointless » because they  » are made indiscriminately in sections with perfect visibility . »

They also consider that the resulting dry grass , «not only doe NOT reduce the risk of fire , it increases it » and described the » disastrous » consequences . » It affects the roots of numerous trees and shrubs , leaving a poison spread that directly affects wildlife especially rabbits , hares and partridges .»

» Even ditches have been sprayed in recreational areas frequented by families going to eat picnics or spend the day outdoors . Nothing warns the public that these areas are poisoned » they reported..

Environmental organizations also point out that the use of toxic products such as glyphosate , under the currently prevailing capitalist model in agriculture , has caused an «unstoppable » biodiversity loss , citing the decline of many species of butterflies , beetles , amphibians and plants » who used to find refuge in the roadsides and edges » . » All this damage to the natural world affects rural tourism in our province, which is seen as damaging part of its own appeal , with the economic damage that this entails.»

Denunciamos la aplicación indiscriminada de herbicidas en carreteras

Ecologistas en Acción y WWF de Guadalajara denuncian la fumigación «indiscriminada» con herbicidas, como el glifosato, de las cunetas de las carreteras de la provincia, en una campaña sinsentido que lleva a cabo la Consejería de Fomento en otoño, cuando las especies se encuentra en crecimiento estancado o ya secas, y en época de lluvias.

Las organizaciones ecologistas han tenido conocimiento de la campaña de otoño 2013 que lleva a cabo la Consejería de Fomento en las carreteras regionales de nuestra provincia, sin salvaguardar aquellos tramos que atraviesen espacios naturales protegidos. Además se basan en un Real Decreto del año 1983, cuando en la actualidad se encuentra vigente el Real Decreto 1311/2012, que regula el uso sostenible de los fitosanitarios.

Las organizaciones ecologistas consideran que «es una práctica que está prácticamente erradicada en Europa y, de hecho, en Holanda esta prohibida porque contamina el medio ambiente y perjudica mucho a la biodiversidad». En este sentido, las organizaciones ecologistas exigen a las «autoridades competentes» que «se prohíban» las fumigaciones de las cunetas con herbicidas y que «solo se elimine de forma mecánica» la hierba que pueda afectar a la seguridad vial o como medida de prevención de incendios.

Consideramos que la aplicación de herbicidas en las cunetas de las carreteras es «arbitraria» e «injustificada» y denunciamos que durante los últimos años se han producido fumigaciones «masivas» con productos que contienen glifosato, un herbicida no selectivo de amplio espectro. «Según estudios de toxicidad, los herbicidas con base de glifosato son altamente tóxicos para animales y humanos y producen daños genéticos, trastornos reproductivos, anomalías espermáticas y carcinogénesis».

Asimismo, WWF y Ecologistas en Acción de Guadalajara alertan que el glifosato utilizado en estas fumigaciones es «altamente tóxico», que «se absorbe a través del suelo, persiste durante meses y es muy soluble en agua, lo que aumenta su peligrosidad al entrar en los ecosistemas por escorrentía superficial».

Respecto a la justificación habitual para las fumigaciones denunciadas, relativa a eliminar hierbas para mejorar la visibilidad en las carreteras y reducir los riesgos de incendio forestal, los ecologistas consideran que son argumentos «falsos» e «inútiles», pues «se realizan de forma indiscriminada en tramos con visibilidad perfecta».

Además, consideran que al secar la hierba, «no sólo no reduce el peligro de incendios, si no que lo aumenta» y califican de «nefastas» las consecuencias. «Afecta a los numerosos pies de árboles y arbustos, dejando esparcido un veneno que afecta directamente a la fauna silvestre, como conejos, liebres y perdices». «Incluso se han fumigado cunetas de zonas recreativas frecuentadas por personas que van a comer o a pasar el día o que son pastoreadas. Nada informa de que estas zonas están envenenadas», denuncian.

Las organizaciones ecologistas señalan además que el uso de productos tóxicos como el glifosato, según el actual modelo «productivista que impera» en la agricultura, provoca una «imparable» pérdida de biodiversidad, poniendo como ejemplo el declive de numerosas especies de mariposas, escarabajos, anfibios y plantas silvestres «que encontraban refugio en las márgenes de las carreteras y en las lindes». «Todo este daño al mundo natural repercute en el turismo rural de nuestra provincia, que ve como se daña parte de su propio atractivo, con el perjuicio económico que conlleva».
