Spain finally had a place which agreed to host its high level Nuclear Waste, for thousands of years. But the battle against the cemetery had only just begun
.

In Sept 2017 the local Castilla-La Mancha government again rejected the Centralized Nuclear Cemetery (ATC) pending a new environmental resolution by the Ministry, which they said “must be negative.”
“We have made it clear that we want a different energy model; we do not want the promotion of nuclear energy and we are committed to renewables. The ATC is not compatible with a natural space, “they argued.

For five years renewable energy has been severely blocked in Spain due to disgraceful laws by the corrupt PP to favour the fossil sector and finally the EU is set to fine Spain for its blatant ‘Tax on using the Sun’ policy.
The population of the village is divided, the far right ‘Popular party’ won 61.98% of the 163 votes in the last local election.,
In March 2017 the environmental protection blocking the nuclear waste cemetery was annulled by the PP controlled High Court
The Superior Court of Justice of Castilla-La Mancha (TSJ) ruled on March 8 against the expansion of the Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) of the Laguna de El Hito under which they want to install the Centralized Nuclear Cemetery (ATC) for highly radioactive waste from nuclear power plants.
The TSJ endorsed the previous argument of the Supreme Court in its ruling and reiterated that the management of radioactive waste is above the protection of birds. A statement whose interpretation opens the door to building a radioactive waste warehouse anywhere in the peninsula, such as Monfragüe or Doñana.
In reply the Castilla-La Mancha local govt called for European support to protect the lagoon affected by the nuclear silo. The regional government sent a letter to the Commissioner of the Environment to demand the protection of the natural area of Laguna del Hito
“They have the obligation to protect it, not only the Board, but also the European institutions,” says the local Minister of the Environment.
