Ethiopia Nears Victory in its Civil War, US Scrambles to Control the Outcome

The Ethiopian and Eritrean armies now seem close to winning a two-year war with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF,) a US-backed clique that ruled Ethiopia brutally for 27 years, from 1991 to 2018.

As I write this, on October 24, 2022, Ethiopian and Eritrean forces are in control of most major cities in Ethiopia’s Tigray Region. They are reported to have surrounded Mek’ele, the Tigrayan Region’s capital, but it’s not clear whether or not they are inside.

On Saturday, October 22nd, huge crowds rallied for Ethiopian sovereignty in Addis Ababa and across the country, holding up signs that read “No More to a Proxy War,” “USA Respect Ethiopian Sovereignty,” and “No Intervention in the Name of Humanitarian Aid.” Establishment outlets including the Associated Press and Bloomberg News felt compelled to report the rallies.

The West, most of all the US, has given political, diplomatic, and narrative support to the TPLF throughout the war, and now they’re scrambling. UN Secretary General António Guterres and Western officials and NGOs keep calling for a “cessation of hostilities,” which seems to be a demand that Ethiopia and Eritrea stop short of victory.

Every day the propagandistic attacks on both Ethiopia and Eritrea become more shrill and extreme.

Former US diplomat Elizabeth Shackelford wrote, in the Chicago Tribune , “[Anonymous] sources from the area claim Ethiopian and Eritrean forces (their allies) have been instructed to kill three Tigrayans each, including elderly and children, and that victims’ limbs and skulls are on display.”

US controlled States rejected Russia’s accusations as ridiculous, laughable, impossible… But Zelensky himself threatened to make a Nuclear Bomb (April 16 2021) unless Ukraine were admitted to NATO. His nuclear threat was repeated just before Russia invaded, and many considered it ‘the last straw’ that forced Russia to act. Ukraine had Nuclear Armaments in the Soviet era, and has both the ingredients and skilled technicians to make Nuclear Arms. A ‘Dirty Bomb’ for them is a simpler construction, merely lacing conventional explosives with radioactivity, and can reportedly be delivered by standard Tocha missiles.

What Is A Dirty Bomb And Will Ukraine Use It Against Russia?

“Many signs” show Ukraine is winding down its program amid Moscow’s revelations, a senior diplomat claimed

Kiev might be shelving its alleged ‘dirty bomb’ program after Russia exposed it, Moscow’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, claimed on Tuesday. He added that Ukraine may well have time to do this before the upcoming nuclear inspection.

Over the last few days, Russian officials, including Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, have been accusing Kiev of preparing a false-flag attack with the use of a ‘dirty bomb’, a device combining conventional explosives with radioactive material. Ukraine has categorically denied Moscow’s claims. 

“If you read the Ukrainian Telegram channels, you would see that there is a lot of fuss in the Ukrainian ruling circles now because of the campaign that we have started to launch, and there are many signs that they are trying to sort of wind down this program,” Polyansky said, as quoted by RIA Novosti. 

In his opinion, Ukraine has enough time to scale back the ‘dirty bomb’ plans before the upcoming visit of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors.   

“They can come, but I am telling you that a ‘dirty bomb’ is not a very complex device,” Polyansky explained, adding that there is no guarantee that Kiev will not resume its alleged activity after the inspectors depart. 

At the same time, the official claimed that the danger of Kiev using a ‘dirty bomb’ remains “very high,” and that Ukraine “has the opportunity” and “has every reason to use it.”

An anticancer drug developed at the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) has managed to stabilize the disease and slow down tumor growth in eight patients, according to the preliminary results of phase I clinical trials conducted on 22 people. Tests with Omomyc (OMO-103) also indicate that it has few side effects, so it will continue to be evaluated in a second phase.

The preliminary results will continue to be evaluated in phase II of human trials: “It is still very early.”The drug targets, for the first time, a key oncogene in tumor development and has caused few side effects.

The 22 patients who participated in the clinical trial that began in April 2021 had a variety of solid tumors, including non-small cell lung, intestine and pancreatic cancers, and had received at least three prior treatments, making them heavily pre-treated. Eight of 12 patients who underwent CT scans after nine weeks of treatment showed stable disease in which tumor growth had stopped.

“It is still too early to assess the activity of the drug, but we are seeing the stabilization of the disease in some patients. Of note is the case of a patient with pancreatic cancer who remained in the study for more than six months, and in whom the tumor shrank by 8% and there was an 83% reduction in tumor-derived DNA circulating in the bloodstream.

Laura Soucek (born 1973) is a Group Leader at VHIO (the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology), Research Professor at ICREA, and CEO of Peptomyc S.L.She works on the Myc oncoprotein, the deregulation of which occurs during almost all cancers.Soucek has designed a dominant negative variant, Omomyc, which allows her to investigate the benefits of inhibiting Myc in cancer.

There is also a patient with a salivary gland tumor whose disease remains stable and is still in the study after 15 months, and a patient with sarcoma, who had responded very poorly to previous treatments, who remained stable for 8 months.” explained Dr. Elena Garralda, director of the Cancer Molecular Therapy Research Unit (UITM) – CaixaResearch of the VHIO.

These are preliminary results and will be further evaluated in a phase II clinical trial, which will begin in the coming months. Omomyc will also be tested in combination with chemotherapy or other therapies.
