The Amnesty and ‘pact of forgetting’ that followed the Dictatorship in Spain was designed to create a new democracy. Passing over monstrous crimes to break the cycle of violence. But the catholic far right still has large control over the courts, army and police and inherits the stolen wealth of 40 years in absolute power. Now with a new fascist party rising and heavy police repression many see the ‘pact of forgetting’ to be a broken mistake, and Spain to be a papier-mâché democracy.

In his time as the Spanish Minister of Commerce, Alberto Garzón was attacked from all sides for stating the obvious, that in Spain tourism is an industry with little added value and job insecurity.
The vice president, Pablo Iglesias,now resigning, has been pilloried for stating another obvious point, that in Spain there is a democratic abnormality.
His remark broke the taboo. The pact of forgetting. Speaking the obvious in Spain is a high-risk exercise.
