Has a major technological breakthrough in Japan created a new generation of wind turbines that finally destroy the claims by the nuclear lobby that renewables can’t match their dangerous and dirty radioactive power?

Protesters blocked in bid to ‘occupy’ Wall Street

Hundreds of people marched Saturday near Wall Street in New York in an attempt to occupy the heart of global finance to protest greed, corruption and budget cuts. Plans by protesters to turn Lower Manhattan into an “American Tahrir Square” was thwarted when police blocked all the streets near the New York Stock Exchange and Federal Hall in Lower Manhattan. The demonstrators had planned to stake out Wall Street until their anger over a financial system they say favors the rich and powerful was heard.

“The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99 Percent that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the one percent,” said a statement on the website Occupy Wall Street.

By noon, about 700 people, many carrying backpacks and sleeping bags, had gathered near Wall Street to search for a place to camp amid a heavy police presence. The protesters who did arrive were full of zeal and righteous indignation.

“This is a protest against corporate greed and we come to Wall Street because Wall Street is the Ground Zero for corporate greed,” said Julia River Hitt, a 22-year-old philosophy student.

“We are here just to say we are fed up, we are not gonna take it anymore.”

The protesters gathered in Trinity Place, some some 1,000 feet (300 meters) from Wall Street, which they hope to turn into the US version of the famous square in Cairo that became the focal point of protests that led to the ouster of Egyptian strongman Hosni Mubarak in February. “No more corruption,” read one sign a demonstrator brandished. “Wall St Greed, New Yorkers Say Enough,” read another. “I will sleep here. A lot of us we will sleep here,” said Steven Taylor, 24 a protester who arrived equipped with a backpack and a sleeping bag.

Youths shared food and discussed the economic crisis in groups of 15 and 20. Others marched around the square.

Among the group was Javier Dorado, a law professor from Spain who compared the protesters with the mass “indignant” demonstrations in his country against high unemployment, welfare cuts and corruption. “This is a global phenomenon that is taking place in Europe and many countries,” Dorado said.

The protest came as the United States struggles to overcome an economic crisis marked by a huge budget deficit that has triggered cuts in the public service sector while unemployment hovers stubbornly above nine percent. “There’s a war in Libya, there’s a war in Afghanistan, there’s a war in Iraq and we have cuts in education, social programs,” said a masked protester who declined to be identified.

Arctic Ice melt..’WORST EVER’

Its been a depressing race.. to see if 2011 will be the worst or the 2nd worst year for Arctic Ice loss.  Now the first reports that it’s the worst ever are coming in.

The Arctic lost sea ice very rapidly in the first half of July. Ice loss slowed in late July-early August, but resumed again later in August. Web cam 1 has tipped but not fallen over completely, as you can see in the images.

Depressing and pathetic. At the North Pole Web cam 2 fell over on July 23 in the melted snow and ice, and now views only the sky.

The North Pole skull cap shrank to about half a percent under the previous record low set in September 2007. University of Bremen physicists said there was uncertainty in July about whether the ice melt would surpass the previous record.

They said their studies indicated that continuing ice decline was related to man-made global warming.

“It seems to be clear that this is a further consequence of the man-made global warming with global consequences,” researchers said in their report.  “Directly, the livehood of small animals, algae, fishes and mammals like polar bears and seals is more and more reduced.”

As Arctic sea ice has continued to decline, it also has become drastically thinner overall, the report said.

The researchers said that previously the melting ice had been attributed to yearly weather anomalies. But now it is believed the massive melt is due in part to global warming and the increasing albedo effect, which has to do with the power of the surface to reflect sun. As more ice melts, instead of having white ice reflect more of the sun’s rays, you have a larger amount of open water that absorbs those same rays. Therefore, warmer temperatures lead to even more ice melting….A typical Runaway Climate Change loop.

What does this mean??

Loss of Arctic ice means…

Accelerated global warming, loss of habitat and species, worse ocean acidification threatening disaster, unpredictable methane blowouts from the seabed, methane release from melting permafrost ‘bogs’, (methane is shorter lived but more than 20 times worse than CO2), warmer oceans means more storms and hurricanes in the tropics, coral die off threatening biosphere, oil gas and mineral exploration  and extraction, causing pollution and more climate change ( a man made feedback loop).

It’s not true that there is nothing we can do about climate change.

It’s not the heat we put out that is the problem, it’s the CO2,. There are
plenty of other energy  technologies that don’t produce CO2. It’s just a case of switching soon enough, before the change becomes irreversible. So it’s a very good idea to stir people up, because there’s a lead time and later may be too late.

Hey you jammers, dreamers, patriots and revolutionaries out there,

Our occupation of Wall Street is less than two weeks away … do we have it together?

The perpetrators of the massive financial fraud have been allowed to slip quietly from the scene and continue business as usual. Our elected representatives in Washington have become so tightly intertwined with the financiers and bankers that public accountability has all but vanished.

#OCCUPYWALLSTREET is all about breaking up that cosy relationship between money and politics and bringing the perpetrators of the financial crash of 2008 to justice.

On September 17, 20,000 of us will descend on Wall Street, the iconic financial center of America, set up a peaceful encampment, hold a people’s assembly to decide what our one demand will be, and carry out an agenda of full-spectrum, absolutely nonviolent civil disobedience the likes of which the country has not seen since the freedom marches of the 1960s.

From our encampment we will launch daily smart mob forays all over lower Manhattan … peaceful, creative happenings in front of Goldman Sachs; the SEC; the Federal Reserve; the New York Stock Exchange … and maybe even, if we can figure out where they’re being held, at the sites of Obama’s private $38,500 per person fundraising events happening somewhere in Manhattan on Sept. 19 and 20.

Our strategy will be that of the master strategist Sun Tzu: “appear at points which the enemy must hasten to defend; march swiftly to places where you are not expected.”

With a bit of luck, and if fate is on our side, we may be able to turn all of lower Manhattan into a site of passionate democratic contestation – an American Tahrir Square.

We will do all this with peace in our hearts. Our unshakable commitment to nonviolence will give us the spiritual strength we need to inspire the nation and to ultimately triumph in the weeks and maybe months of struggle that will unfold after September 17.

PS. Last week Anonymous endorsed #OCCUPYWALLSTREET with a video that attracted over 70,000 views. The Department of Homeland Security has warned the nation’s bankers to be prepared. Corporate owned media is taking notice. Yesterday, a columnist for MarketWatch.com posted a rousing portrait of what may now unfold:

Anything but corporate profit is false by definition. Scientific proof is routinely trashed.

While FRACKING is being banned on health grounds in European countries “The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is issuing a permit every two to 30 minutes, without having any idea what this could mean for the community or the environment,” Lo Basso stressed.
