Hydro Dam Project in Guatemala Defeated After Eight Year Struggle

guatelala-dam-victory

from Intercontinental Cry with thanks… After eight years of struggle, communities in Santa Cruz Barillas, Guatemala, are celebrating a decision by Spanish company Ecoener-Hidralia to leave Guatemala and start the “process of extinction of Hidro Santa Cruz S.A”.

The Dec. 29 announcement signals the end to a tragic legacy of political persecution and imprisonment, criminalization of resistance, threats and the murder of social leaders.

The aggressiveness of the hydro dam’s proponents reached its highest point with the murder of community leader Andrés Pedro Miguel, attributed to security officers hired by the multinational company. Legal authorities, even in light of undisputed evidence, decided to keep this crime unpunished.

Once rich Libyan welfare State, still buried in War, Chaos, Hunger after NATO mega-crime

 ghadaffi-lives
Greedy western powers, led by the USA,  took advantage of the ‘Arab Spring’ to try and seize Libya’s oil and assets and cynically bombed the benevolent dictator Gaddafi out of power as a ‘humanitarian intervention’ in the name of ‘Parliamentary Democracy’ (which has never worked in a tribal moslem society). 5 years later the horror and suffering goes on and on, amid a search for a new dictator able to channel Libya-s wealth to western corporations.libya

info from  Higinio Polo at El Viejo Topo.. translation by The Free

We do not know how many people have died in Libya  as a result of the brutal NATO intervention in 2011. Some sources speak of about thirty thousand dead; Others increase that figure. The Red Cross estimates about 120,000 deaths. But there is no doubt that the war that started NATO has destroyed the country and thrown its six million inhabitants into a sinister nightmare. MEXICO: ANARCHIST PRISONER LUIS FERNANDO SOTELO RESENTENCED

From Enlace Zapatista  Translation submitted to It’s Going Downfreedom-fernando-sotelo

The modification enacted by the Superior Court of “Justice” on the sentence of our compañero Luis Fernando Sotelo is a joke. The reduction of the sentence to 13 years [from 33 years], is not to serve justice, but is a mockery of it. The irregularities in the process have been denounced innumerable times. Evidence doesn’t exist to incriminate him and during the trial the only eyewitness, the driver of the metro-bus, said he did not recognize our compañero.

Why is he still in prison? It is not for judicial reasons, but political ones. It is punishment for social protest. They want to keep him imprisoned as an example. Our compañero is detained under the command of the government of Mexico City, lead by Miguel Ángel Mancera. Or perhaps also the rumors of corruption of the Fourth Chamber of the Superior Criminal Court are more correct?libertad-sotelo1

URGENT: Ecuador Shuar Warriors in desperate fight for Mother Earth

The Shuar warriors fight police in an earlier confrontation

BY EMIL SIRÉN·MARTES, “The military came with thirty trucks and two helicopters that shot at us. I’ve been told one of us is injured but I don’t know anything about the others. Everyone ran off to the forest”, says an indigenous person who was a target of the helicopter shooting [1]

On the 15th of December, the Ecuadorian government sent troops, tanks, and helicopters against an indigenous community in Ecuador. The civilians got shot at from two helicopters with automatic weapons while fire bombs were dropped on houses and crops that the indigenous people feed on. The president of Ecuador refused to have a dialogue, in contrary, he threatened with even more violence.

Background:

The indigenous people in Ecuador have a long history of conflict with the government, which mercilessly has invaded their territories to exploit natural resources, violating their constitutional rights. For example, the heavily criticized company Lundin Gold operates large scale mining operations in areas nearby to the current conflicts.

The Evidence: Is Rex Tillerson of Exxon the Top Climate Killer?

trump-and-rexreblogging evidence against RexExxon Climate Criminal Rex Tillerson has knowingly caused runaway Climate Change, which is leading to the extinction of millions of species, including YOU and ME, and is already killing thousands around the planet.

Climate criminal number one — Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson

by There’s no better face of climate catastrophe than ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson. Exxon’s size alone makes Tillerson our “Ace of Spades” climate criminal. (And I vote David and Charles Koch, in that order, as the King and Queen — but more on these rankings in a bit.)

Mr. Tillerson first hit these pages (and our radar) in this post — Who is the enemy leading us to Climate Catastrophe? Here we quote Bill McKibben, who quotes Naomi Klein: Continue reading “The Evidence: Is Rex Tillerson of Exxon the Top Climate Killer?”
