Athens, Greece – On a cold night in late December at a smoky venue in the Greek capital, Anfo takes to the stage and immediately launches into a song.

A tall, thin man in a Soviet beret, guitarist Nikos stands on the edge of the stage. The vocalist, Sotiris, lowers his head and looks downward between guttural screams.

Behind them, Giorgos Chloros pounds away at the drums. Anfo, a leftist punk band, is joined by a handful of other punk outfits.

“Everybody [in Anfo] is involved in the anti-capitalist struggle in some form,” Chloros, a 45-year-old socialist, told Al Jazeera, explaining that they perform at anti-racism festivals and other pro-refugee events.  Continue reading “Greek punk bands raise money for refugee squats”

We Deny free speech to Nazis who try to Destroy it for Everyone

Freedom against the freedom of speech

With the expansion of neo-fascist and neo-nazi groups in the shadows of ever more racist, xenophobic and sexist “traditional” conservative right-wing political parties, confusion over the significance of the liberal freedom of speech can paralyse radical political criticism and action.  We share below a timely analysis from CrimethInc on the limits of free dialogue when politics must be conceived of as war, as a conflict between ways of life.

We are Not in a Dialogue:

We need Not Just Free Speech……….. but Freedom Itself

antifaschistische-aktion-women-s-t-shirtMaybe you missed this, but you’re not in a dialogue. Your views are beside the point. Argue all you want—your adversaries are glad to see you waste your breath. Better yet if you protest: they’d rather you carry a sign than do more. They’ll keep you talking as long as they can, just to tire you out—to buy time.

They intend to force their agenda on you. That’s what all the guns are for, what the police and drones and surveillance cameras are for, what the FBI and CIA and NSA are for, what all those laws and courts and executive orders are for. It’s what their church is for, what those racist memes are for, what online harassment and bullying are for. It’s what gay bashings and church burnings are for. GIRLS RUN WORLD: A REPORT BACK FROM LOS ANGELES

Submitted to It’s Going Down……   LOOK, Los Angeles is getting a lot of attention for the 750,000 participants of the Women’s March. In all the reports there is not one mention that, for the last two days, breakaway marches have stormed DTLA. LA often gets passed over in report-backs that list things like these anti-Trump protests because politics here tend to be very localized and are not necessarily in a coded political framework. But folks in LA are lit and deeply tuned into the way speculative capital is destroying our city.

#DAYONE

The first day was a march against the parade of nonprofits: forty organizations working together, from Code Pink to Union del Barrio to ANSWER. Though they gave many speeches their words rang hollow on a crowd that had heard it all before. It became obvious that the crowd wanted to have a march that was not in collaboration with the cops or the state. Some rowdy kids––queer, trans, black, brown, and white––grabbed the megaphone and announced that we should march. And so we did.

J20/21..Millions to Disrupt Trump..10 reasons to Go Hard

Ten Reasons to Go Hard on January 20

crimethinc-art01

From CrimethInc:

The inauguration of Donald Trump is right around the corner. Disrupt J20 is publicizing a wide range of demonstrations all around the US on January 20, including a call for an anti-capitalist and anti-fascist contingent in Washington, DC.

But why focus on this particular day, of all days? And why would it be worth driving across the country to a city crowded with reactionaries and police? Here are ten reasons why we think everyone needs to pull out the stops on January 20.

J21 Women’s March: Unite & Fight Against Trump!

What is at stake here is not a single day of protest, but the paradigm of what it will mean to resist Trump. Right now, people around the US are outraged and terrified at the prospect of being governed by a megalomaniacal buffoon. This is an opportunity to expand the networks of people who are prepared to stand up to the government, but it won’t last long.

Nesrin Abdullah, spokeswoman YPJ Rojava – ‘Defend the Land. Transform the People’.

The spokeswoman for the Yekîneyên Parastinê Yên Jinê (Women’s Defense Units, YPJ), Nesrin Abdullah, has analyzed the current situation by the Firat News Agency in the first interview of the year 2017:

As YPJ, how do you evaluate the war in 2016? In what battles and operations did you participate?

In the first place, 2016 was a different year because some formations were established and the YPJ took part in these formations. Before 2016, YPG and YPJ carried out co-organized operations. However, in 2016, the YPJ participated in new structures and operations as a women’s force.nesrin-abdullahNesrin Abdullah, spokeswoman YPJ: ‘the struggle is not only for the defense of our land, but also for transforming people’ Continue reading “Nesrin Abdullah, spokeswoman YPJ Rojava – ‘Defend the Land. Bengaluru attacks: Patriarchy excuses toxic masculinity by night and day

The toxic masculinity that triggered the New Year Eve’s attacks on women was there in the morning to deny they even happened.dc-cover-lrkpi1qm0tq2ul2f34ki3eoo03-20170107030557-medi

The reasoning extended goes like this: You had violence visited upon you (groped/pinched/felt-up/beaten/raped/murdered) because you did this (wore short clothes, wore no clothes, wore revealing clothes, loved a man of the wrong caste, stepped out of home, stepped into the street at the wrong time of day, went to work, went partying, got drunk, got on a bus, were speaking to a man of a different religion, did not pay enough dowry, talked back, and so on).

The mass molestation of women in Bengaluru during the midnight celebrations at New Year brings to mind the similar outrageous incident that took place in Cologne last year.

The kneejerk reaction of the Indian political establishment was to blame “western culture” – Karnataka’s Home Minister G Parameshwara blamed young women for their western attire, while Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi blamed the late-night revelries as a western import.maxresdefault

Rewind to a year ago, and in another part of the world, immigrants were blamed for the sexual violence, asylum seekers were rounded up as suspects, and the right-wing seized the opportunity to talk about “rapefugees”

Violence against women is universal, so, we end up with multiple iterations of the same tragedy, with eerily similar responses: In India, the ruling class blames western culture. In the West, the ruling class blames immigrants. This blame game achieves its intended aim: It outsources trouble, diverts attention from the misogyny on the domestic front and normalises violence against women.
