Spain annuls Catalan self-government, prepares military rule from Madrid

By Alex Lantier: Three weeks after the savage police crackdown on the October 1 Catalan independence referendum, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced the invocation of Article 155 to strip Catalonia’s regional government of its powers. In its place, Madrid is to install an unelected government in Barcelona backed by the Spanish army, Guardia Civil paramilitary police and other police units.

The implementation of Article 155 will inevitably involve the Spanish regime in a violent confrontation with broad masses of the Catalan population, where there is deep opposition to Madrid’s turn to dictatorship. As Rajoy’s Council of Ministers formulated the measures on Saturday, a half million people marched in Barcelona against Madrid’s arbitrary arrest of two Catalan nationalist politicians, Jordi Sànchez of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and Jordi Cuixart of Omnium Cultural.

Catalan separatists are mobilizing a human shield and a Civil Disobedience Campaign to block efforts by the Spanish authorities to take control . Tens of thousands plan to concentrate around the regional government’s headquarters in Barcelona’s Gothic quarter and the nearby parliament building. They expect Spanish police to use force to try to shut down the administration and will put their bodies on the line, said one person. Noise Demo as new LNG Tanker Docks in illegal Galicia plant where 1st Frack Gas arrived

Before the entrance to the Ría of the LNG Benue, loaded with liquefied natural gas for the illegal and dangerous Reganosa plant, the Citizen Emergency Committee announced a noise demonstration, on Monday, October 23 at 7 pm in Amada Garcia Square, in front of the City Council

On Monday October 23, 2017, the new LNG Benue, a Bermuda convenience banner, loaded with thousands of tons of liquefied natural gas, entered the Ferrol Ría estuary and is being unloaded in the Reganosa tanks.The “LNG Benue” vessel has a total length of 285 meters, and a capacity of 145,952 m³. This ship, with enormous capacity entered this morning at the mouth of the estuary and had to cross the narrow, narrow, narrow, rocky bottomed channel of more than 4,500 meters, until reaching the docks of the Punta Wharf discharge Promontoiro, located in the municipality of Mugardos.

Here Reganosa, with the complicity of unscrupulous politicians, has built a gas plant that threatens us every day, exponentially increasing this threat every trime a loaded LNG ship enters the Ría, for the dangerous and illegal Mugardos regasification plant. This ship is the 228th that unloads in Reganosa, since “Galicia Spirit” in May 2007.

In the face of the increase in the threat against security and life, which involves the entry of a new gas vessel, next to the installation of the Gas Plant in Mugardos, the Citizen Emergency Committee for the Ría de Ferrol, as usual summoned an action of protest and denouncement, consisting of a Sound Concentration. This Monday at 7 in the afternoon, at Amada Garcia Square, in front of the Administrative Building of the Xunta de Galicia.

First fracking gas shipment from USA also landed at Mugardos, Ferrol

Ferrol was also the destination of the first LNG tanker to deliver US Fracking Gas to Spain which was pumped into the Mugardos plant declared illegal by Spain’s Supreme Court.

Loaded with gas from US Fracking the ship Sestao Knutsen arrived on July 22, 2016 at the Mugardos terminal located in the Port of Ferrol in Galicia operated and owned by the company Reganosa. Continue reading

Catalan Crisis Snowballs into an Economic Crisis

It’s not easy being a Catalan bank these days. In the last few weeks the region’s two biggest lenders, Caixabank and Sabadell, have lost €9 billion of deposits as panicked customers in Catalonia have moved their money elsewhere. Many customers in other parts of Spain have also yanked their savings out of Catalan banks, but less out of fear than out of anger at the banks’ Catalan roots.

Moving their official company address to other parts of Spain last week may have helped ease that resentment, allowing the two banks to recoup some €2 billion of deposits. But the move has angered the roughly 2.5 million pro-independence supporters in Catalonia, many of whom have accounts at one of the two banks. Today they expressed that anger by withdrawing cash en masse.

Many protesters made symbolic withdrawals of €155 — a reference to Article 155 of the Spanish constitution, which Madrid activated today to impose direct rule over the semi-autonomous region. Others opted for €1,714 in a nod to the year 1714, when Barcelona was captured by the troops of King Felipe V, who then proceeded to suppress the rights of rebellious regions. In Puerto Rico, a humanitarian catastrophe continues to unfold 12 day after Hurricane Maria struck the island. Over the weekend, the Pentagon said the percentage of Puerto Rico’s 3.5 million residents without access to clean drinking water rose to 55 percent. Only 5 percent of the island has electricity, while food and fuel remain scarce and about half of the island’s roads are impassable.
