Enric Duran on disobedient crowdfunding … CoopFunding

Enric Duran on shared and disobedient crowdfunding platform networks | P2P-Foundation by GNUnion

We’ve recently featured Coopfunding, an Open-Sourced crowdfunding platform designed to “…promote the financing of projects with a social, self managed and cooperative nature.”  Today we present a guest article by Enric Duran, one of the developers behind Coopfunding and its parent-project, the Catalan Integral Cooperative, explaining the reasons that led to the creation of Coopfunding. This article was originally published in Radi.MS

CoopfundingCoopfunding,

The expansion of crowdfunding in the last few years has been quite vertiginous.

Hundreds of projects have been able to get off the ground around the world coming from very different backgrounds but united in the aim of creating a link between donors and the projects they sponsor.

Crowdfunding, for its practicality and usefulness, has expanded without any ideological limitation and while it served to finance many social projects it has also supported more conventional initiatives based on consumerism and business as meant in the capitalist system.

In this way, more traditional fund raising events like benefit gigs and have been overlooked, and we should take in to account that with the crowdfunding model we are at risk of leaving the financing of social initiative in the hands of unscrupulous business which, through the management of crowdfunding platforms, are making the same profit that any middle man would make in an ordinary business transaction, through the charge of commissions which range between 5% and 10% of the donations received. Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indygogo have already made profits in the millions region. Continue reading “Enric Duran on disobedient crowdfunding … CoopFunding”

Exclusive: For hacker Jeremy Hammond, prison is a temporary inconvenience

Free Jeremy Hammond

The political activist and Anonymous hacker has big plans after his release from prison, scheduled for 2020

panther%2520abcMANCHESTER, Ky. – Dozens of websites – many belonging to law enforcement organizations – escaped planned destruction and defacement when the FBI arrested high-profile hacker Jeremy Hammond in 2012.

“I was at the peak of my work,” Hammond told America Tonight from a medium-security, federal prison facility in Kentucky. “It’s a shame I got caught when I did.”

The political activist and computer whiz said he had already breached dozens of vulnerable websites and was “halfway finished” with preparations for a full-fledged cyberattack when federal authorities disrupted his plans. He said he was going to launch new online attacks every week. Most of his targets never even knew they were his would-be victims.

“F*ck FBI Friday,” he chuckled. “It was only heating up by the time I was arrested.” Continue reading “Jeremy Hammond in jail: they can never take away our principles.. our passions”

Stop Oil Exploration Boycott Repsol: permiso

The Canary Islands is a group of seven major islands of Spain situated in the Atlantic Ocean just 160 kilometers (around 100 miles) from Morocco and Mauritania in Northwest Africa. Their location makes them a unique ecosystem, with at least 2,000 native animal species. Since 2005, they have been part of the United Nations’ Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas, together with 12 more ecosystems including the Galapagos Archipelago, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, and Hawaii’s Papahanaumokuakea National Monument.Ben Megac NoOilCanarias

As a result of the designation, hundreds of oil tankers that cross the Canary Islands’ waters every year have to give notice in advance to Spanish authorities and follow strict corridors when they cross the 7,000 square kilometer (4,300 square miles) protected zone.

That area, however, will be drilled in the coming weeks by Repsol now that the court has cleared the last hurdles for its plans. The company plans to drill the wells at a depth of around 1 kilometer (a bit more than half a mile) and then 3.5 kilometers more inside the Earth’s crust.Ramon-Soria

The go-ahead concludes a 14-year-long feud that has pitched many interests against each other: the Canary Islands regional governments against the Spanish authorities; the tourism industry against the oil industry; and conservatives against socialists (and, sometimes, different factions inside those both parties against each other). Even Spain and Morocco have argued about how to divide the waters where the oil is.

Morocco has been drilling on its side of the field for more than one decade, but so far it has not found oil. Two oil companies—Britain’s Cairn, and Genel, formally Turkish although incorporated in the tax haven of the British Channel Islands—have just abandoned their efforts in the area.canarias insurgente

‘Grow Heathrow’ eviction Fri 15 Aug – Help Action Camp!

London: Grow Heathrow eviction notice 8am, Friday 15 Aug

heathrow-evictionflyer-400x567

On Friday 15th August at 8am, bailiffs will make their first attempt to evict Grow Heathrow (previously here and here). Four and a half years after the abandoned greenhouses in the middle of Heathrow Airport’s proposed third runway were occupied by local residents together with activists, Heathrow villagers are organising again to resist airport expansion that’s ruled out by climate science.

Residents of the 700+ homes a third runway would destroy have asked to be trained to protect their own homes. On Thursday 14th, the day before the bailiffs visit, there will be talks and workshops on how to peacefully resist the eviction and on how ordinary people successfully shelved plans for a noisy third runway. At 8am on Friday 15th, hopefully you can help protect our home from the County Court bailiffs, ready to do the same for other homes threatened by airport expansion. Grow Heathrow has been described as the ‘heart of the village’ by BBC News and ‘inspirational’ by the local MP. We are still trying to buy the land instead of having bailiffs at our home.

Feminists We Love: Marissa Alexander

By Aishah Shahidah Simmons and Alisa Bierria

      https://i0.wp.com/www.addictinginfo.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Marissa-Alexander.jpg

Today is the first day of Standing Our Ground Week of Action (July 25 – August 1, 2014) in Jacksonville, FL and everywhere in support of Marissa Alexander’s case. The Free Marissa Now Mobilization Campaign is a coalition of organizations and activists that has been mobilizing people in Jacksonville, across the US and around the globe to support the call for Marissa’s freedom.

Less than two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to break bread and talk with my sister and comrade Alisa Bierria, a Free Marissa Now member based in the Bay Area, about what Marissa Alexander’s case means for feminist social movements and the current push for grassroots support for her freedom during the week of action.

Since Ms. Alexander is under house arrest, I asked Alisa if she would partner with me on a Feminists We Love feature on Marissa Alexander. Ms. Alexander’s current struggle for freedom exemplifies many aspects of The Feminist Wire’s mission and vision. We are in unwavering solidarity with the movement to free her. If you aren’t aware of Ms. Alexander’s case or if you don’t have a full grasp of what’s at stake for Ms. Alexander, and by extension all women who are or will be in similar situations in the future; we hope that after reading this conversation you will be called to action.
