Anarchist Developments in Cultural Studies (ADCS) is an international peer reviewed and open access journal to the study of new and emerging perpsectives in anarchist thought.

ADCS is an attempt to bring anarchist thought into contact with innumerable points of connection.

We publish articles, reviews/debates, announcements and unique contributions that:

(1) adopt an anarchist perpective with regards to analyses of language, discourse, culture, and power,

(2) investigate various facets of anarchist thought and practice from a non-anarchist standpoint, and

(3) investigate or incorporate elements of non-anarchist thought and practice from the standpoint of traditional anarchist thought..

Why the Climate Crisis and the Global Rise of Fascism are Inextricable

Round the cycle turns. As millions are driven from their homes by climate disasters, the extreme right exploits their misery to extend its reach.

Thriving on Catastrophe

As the extreme right gains power, climate programmes are shut down, heating accelerates and more people are driven from their homes.

If we don’t break this cycle soon, it will become the dominant story of our times.

A recent paper in Nature identifies the “human climate niche”: the range of temperatures and rainfall within which human societies thrive.

We have clustered in the parts of the world with a climate that supports our flourishing, but in many of these places the niche is shrinking.

Already, around 600 million people have been stranded in inhospitable conditions by global heating. Current global policies are likely to result in about 2.7C of heating by 2100. On this trajectory, some 2 billion people may be left outside the niche by 2030, and 3.7 billion by 2090.

If governments limited heating to their agreed goal of 1.5C, the numbers exposed to extreme heat would be reduced fivefold.

But if they abandon their climate policies, this would lead to around 4.4C of heating. In this case, by the end of the century around 5.3 billion people would face conditions that ranged from dangerous to impossible.

These conditions include extreme disruption, morbidity and death through heat-shock, water stress, crop failure and the spread of infectious disease. The figures do not take into account the effect of rising sea levels, which could displace hundreds of millions more.

Already, weather stations in the Persian Gulf have recorded wetbulb measurements – a combination of heat and humidity – beyond the point (35C at 100% humidity) at which most human beings can survive. At other stations, on the shores of the Red Sea, the Gulf of Oman, the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of California and the western side of south Asia, measurements have come close.

In large parts of Africa there is almost no monitoring of extreme heat events. People are likely to have been dying of heat stress in high numbers already, but their cause of death has not been registered.

The Information War

The symbol of modern medicine: Over the last three years, physicians have fallen into two diametrically-opposed groups: those who blindly followed orders – replicating behaviours imposed on them without questioning anything – and those who dared to think critically and act accordingly.

What it’s like to live in an Informational No Man’s Land: One of the remarkable features of these covid years is the amount of misleading and downright false information emitted by “official” sources, most notably public health authorities, government-appointed regulators, and mainstream media.

I prefer to live uncomfortably in the truth than comfortably in a fantasy built for me by someone who does not have my best interests at heart.

In the evening of June 24, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced that he had arranged an agreement whereby Wagner Group head Evgeny Prigozhin will abandon his mutiny and stop the movement of Wagner units towards Moscow in exchange for “security guarantees” for his fighters.

The 30-hour Prigozhin Protest: Prigozhin has relinquished his private army and his political adventure, and will go to Belarus in a form of exile, and perhaps, one hopes on a human level, some psychological care

“As a result, the parties agreed to the inadmissibility of unleashing a bloody massacre on Russian territory.

Evgeny Prigozhin accepted the proposal of President Alexander Lukashenko to stop the movement of armed men of Wagner in Russia and take further steps to de-escalate tension,” Lukashenko’s office said in a statement.

Lukashenko’s talks with Prigozhin, said to have stretched throughout the day, were agreed with Putin.

The report further indicated that “absolutely advantageous and acceptable option for resolving the situation” had been tabled, including “security guarantees for Wagner’s fighters.”

In an audio recording, Prigozhin said that his units had stopped 200 km from Moscow, and, recognizing the danger of “blood being spilled.”

Prigozhin stated that Wagner units turn their forces around and return to their ‘field camps’.

The announcement came as a Wagner convoy moved closer to Moscow Region (according to Prigozhin – 200km to the city).

In a statement on June 23, Prigozhin declared that he was moving on Moscow to confront Russian military officials he labeled corrupt.

Nonetheless, Prigozhin’s actions and rebellion attempt garnered no support from the Russian population and establishment.

Wagner boss confirms cancellation of advance on Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin described the situation as “backstabbing our country and our people,” while Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) opened a criminal investigation into Prigozhin for “calling for an armed rebellion.”

Senior Russian political and military figures called on Wagner fighters to de-escalate the situation and lay down their arms.

Considering the news about the accepted agreement, it seems this is happening right now.

Meanwhile, reports appeared that forces of the Kyiv regime are launching a new large-scale attack on the Russian military as part of the so-called ‘counter-offensive’.

Intense fighting continue on key parts of the frontline. Zaporozhye Region and South Donetsk region remain the main hot points.
