As the Russian invasion of Ukraine proceeds, anarchists throughout Russia continue to mobilize in protest, joining thousands of other Russians. Here, we publish three statements from longtime Russian anarchist projects that offer some analysis of the situation in Russia and how the invasion of Ukraine might shift it.

Protests are scheduled in Russia for tomorrow (Sunday, February 27). We are still waiting for a report from our contacts in Ukraine, which we will publish when it arrives.

Russia itself has become an information battlefield in the course of the invasion. The Russian government has attempted to block access to Twitter so that Russians will not see what is happening in Ukraine or, for that matter, elsewhere in Russia.

On the other side of the barricades, the Kremlin website was hacked. Whether the Russian people decide to support this invasion at great cost to themselves—or to oppose Putin’s agenda at great risk to themselves—may well determine what happens in Ukraine in the long run.

Anarchist Militant’s Position on Russia’s Attack on Ukraine

The following statement appeared yesterday on the Telegram channel of Militant Anarchist [Боец Анархист], a collective in Russia whose name we have previously translated as “Anarchist Fighter.”

Our position on the events taking place in Ukraine is clearly evident in our previous posts. However, we felt it necessary to express it explicitly, so that something would not be left unsaid.

French President Macron backs NATO war drive against Russia, defying 70% public opinion, inflation and mandate protests

On Wednesday night, in a prime time address to the nation coming shortly before he is due to announce his bid for re-election in next month’s presidential elections, Manu spoke on the rapidly escalating war between Russia and the pro-NATO regime in Ukraine.

Examining Macron’s speech also reveals the explosive internal class conflicts the NATO powers are seeking to suppress with the war drive against Russia.

Already before the war, strikes and protests were mounting against rising inflation and the policies of mass infection with COVID-19 pursued by the NATO powers.

Handouts of trillions of dollars and euros to the investing classes in bank bailouts massively fueled inflation, even as over 2 million people died of COVID-19 inside NATO.

He spoke shortly after a poll emerged showing that 70 percent of the French public oppose joining the conflict.

Defying public opinion, Macron is, however, sending French troops to neighboring Romania and warships and fighter planes to the region.

His speech therefore sought to lull workers to sleep about the mounting danger of a Russia-NATO war, while demanding that the French people support NATO war policies and accept massive bloodshed and vast economic sacrifices.

Denouncing “the brutal attack launched by [Russian President Vladimir] Putin against Ukraine on February 24,” Macron warned: “The coming days will likely be increasingly difficult. … The balance of our continent and many aspects of our daily lives are already transformed by this war and will undergo profound change in the coming months.”

Macron appealed for popular support for NATO’s policy on a fraudulent basis, blaming war entirely on the Russian regime. However, while the Kremlin is responsible for launching the invasion, the NATO powers have systematically worked to threaten Russia and cut off negotiations with it, goading Putin to take military action.

As a result, Macron’s appeal to the French people to support NATO against Russia collapsed into a series of lies, distortions and half-truths.

“Neither France, nor Europe, nor Ukraine nor the NATO alliance wanted this war. On the contrary, we did everything we could to avoid it,” Macron said. Pointing to his own talks with Putin, he added: “The US president made clear his availability to negotiate after physically meeting President Putin in June 2021 in Geneva. It is thus indeed alone and deliberately violating one by one all his promises to the community of nations, that President Putin chose war.”

Leaving aside his own attempts to negotiate with Putin, which clearly have failed, Macron’s claim that US President Joe Biden was “available to negotiate” with Putin is a fraud. Biden said he did not respect Putin’s “red lines,” that is, that Washington would take whatever action it pleased, even if Putin warned that this crossed a “red line” that could lead to war.

“Zelensky Left Ukraine for Poland”, Russian State Duma Speaker Says

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has left Ukraine and is currently in Poland, Russian State Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin asserted.

However the assertion was not immediately reported on the Russian RT channel.

However if he has really fled this time it would be a propaganda blow that could shorten the Russian invasion. Some western media said he was just visiting Poland. A few days ago he was accused of fleeing to Lvov and pre-recording street interviews calling for resistance before leaving.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier said that he has not left the country’s capital Kiev due to the ongoing Russian military operation in Ukraine to “demilitarise and de-Nazify” the country.

“Zelensky left Ukraine. Deputies of the Verkhovna Rada said that they could not get to him in Lvov”, he wrote on his Telegram channel. “He is now in Poland”.

Shortly after Volodin’s statement, Verkhovna Rada asserted that Zelensky did not leave Ukraine and remains in Kiev.

Later, however, Ukrainian opposition lawmaker Ilya Kiva claimed that the president “urgently” left for Poland and is hiding in the US Embassy there.

“This is where he is set to continue to utilize the Ukrainian Army and civilians while making insane orders that cost thousands of human lives”, Kiva said in a video message on his Telegram channel.

Several Western countries have expressed concern in regard to Zelensky’s safety. Particularly, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Paris was ready “to help him if necessary”. It was also reported that the United States offered him evacuation, but he refused.

Reports that Zelensky left the Ukrainian capital emerged earlier last week, with the president refuting them and posting several video messages in which he said he remained in Kiev.

In late February, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine with the goal to “demilitarise and de-Nazify” the country. The operation began after a request for help from the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. After the start of the operation, a massive wave of anti-Russian sanctions followed from the West.

Speaking at a United Nations videoconference in the fall of 2020, Justin Trudeau raised eyebrows, with a hint of a potential link between the global pandemic and the Forum.

Russia’s grain shipments drop by half: World Prices set for an all-time high.

Grain shipments from Russia have more than halved due to traffic restrictions in sea and river ports, the country’s grain union announced on Wednesday.

The decline in exports is due to disruption to both sea and river routes

“Before the current situation [the war in Ukraine and sanctions on Russia], daily shipments of grain from Russia amounted to 100,000 tons.

Now the volume is less than 40,000 tons,” the union’s president, Arkady Zlochevsky, said, as cited by RIA Novosti.

Not only has navigation via the Sea of Azov, which hosts several large Russian ports, been halted, but also shipments on river-sea routes in the Azov Basin, Zlochevsky explained, adding that only long-term contracts were currently permitted to be fulfilled.

Russia is the world’s largest exporter of wheat, accounting for over 18% of international exports.

Together with Ukraine, which has also stopped shipping grain, the two countries account for about 30% of global wheat supplies.

The crisis threatens to push food prices across the world to an all-time high.
