‘Only One Big Project’: Italy’s burgeoning social movements

In the context of a deepening housing crisis, Italy’s movements are becoming increasingly united in their opposition to neoliberalism and austerity.

If there is one day that can symbolically represent the current struggle against austerity and neoliberalism in Italy it must be the 19th of October 2013 — the day of the General Uprising (“sollevazione generale”) against austerity. On that date, behind a banner that read “Only One Big Project: Income and Houses for Everyone!” around one hundred thousand people took the streets of Rome in what could be considered the most successful demonstration by the Italian social movements since the economic crisis began in 2007. The Burning Fuse: How Long Before It All Explodes?

Last week the Spanish authorities backed down rapidly as a violent neighbourhood campaign against yuppification  suddenly spread across the State. Suddenly popular resistance is on the menu with the hitherto pacifist  15M movement calling dozens of demos. Now there is a lull with hopes that many cities will take up their greievances and fight the coming police state legislation , here and across Europe.

      Spain is home to almost one third of the Euro regions unemployed, with an unemployment rate of over 25% and it has been at that for six quarters in a row. That’s a lot of misery, poverty and deprivation, while the financial Mafia keep screwing the people and muttering about adjustments and growth. Imagine, in the UK, 2013, John Major returning to be prime minister. It sounds a bit ridiculous, doesn’t it? Especially if you hypothesise him leading a government of the Conservatives and Labour combined. But in Italy, something like this is likely to happen.

After striking a deal with Berlusconi over the presidency of the republic the Italian ‘Labour’ party is about to jump in bed with the media tycoon’s private political party and nominate Giovanni Amato as prime minister.
