In the wake of the murder by Golden Dawn neo-nazis of anti-fascist rapper and metal worker Pavlos Fyssas, age 34, on Tuesday evening, riots and protests took place in over 26 cities across Greece (see below) and more are expected over the next few days and at the weekend. Below we outline what happened, who was involved and the aftermath.

Fyssas, also known by his rapper name Killah P, was attacked by 25 neo-nazis in the Keratsini area of Piraeus around midnight. His attackers wore black t-shirts and military pants and boots. Fyssas was with his girlfriend and two friends. The neo-nazis chased the four to where more neo-nazis were waiting. It was an ambush. A driver then came out of a car and stabbed Fyssas in the heart and in the stomach. Once the fascists had run off a policeman on a motorbike arrested the murderer. Fyssas later died in hospital. The spot where Fyssas was killed was the same place where only a few days ago eight members of the Communist Party were also assaulted by Golden Dawn nazis.

According to Fyssas’ father his son had earlier been in a café and was overheard to remark disparagingly about Golden Dawn. Someone in the café then made a phone call and not long after Fyssas and his companions left Golden Dawn members turned up. A police statement later announced that the arrested man admitted to being a member of Golden Dawn (also his membership card was found at his home). According to reports the name of the murderer is Georgios Roupakias (Γεώργιος Ρουπακιάς), 45 years old, and is described as a well-known right-wing thug from Piraeus.

Over the last 3 years members of Golden Dawn have murdered 3 immigrants and been implicated in multiple stabbing attacks.

Demonstrations have now taken place (or are due to take place) in the following cities: Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Larisa, Chania, Rethimno, Iraklio, Kozani, Trikala, Komotini, Mytilene, Chios, Kalamata, Corinth, Preveza, Volos, Agrinio, Arta, Ptolemaida, Mesollogi, Samos, Serres, Giannena, Alexandroupolis, and Livadia. Elsewhere there was a solidarity demonstration in Barcelona.

Arrests of demonstrators have also occurred, with at least 70 in Athens. Molotov cocktails were hurled at the Golden Dawn offices in Patras. Golden Dawn offices in Chania were also attacked and police used tear gas against the demonstrators. At Amfiali, a suburb of Athens, nazis threw stones at the demonstrators without police intervention (see photo below).

One of Killah P’s songs “I won’t cry, I won’t fear”:

The world has become a big prison
and I ‘m looking for a way to break the chains.
There is a place waiting for me,
there at a high mountain peak for me to arrive.
That’s why I stretch again my two hands very high,
to steal some light from the bright stars.
I cannot take it down here and I’m about to choke from
this human misery, as much as sorrow.
I cannot stand it anymore and all these people were not from me,
so I followed another path and not the one they forced me to.
It was rough, tough and with many pitfalls,
bad love and friends like venomous vipers.
It had monsters with strange uniforms
always secretly lurking in the shadows.
Don’t stop if you decide to follow it,
tighten your teeth firmly and do not cry.
I took it myself and reached its end
and as the old wise people write in books
when the sun reaches its end,
eagles will light a fire from above.
To those who betrayed me by back stabbing me I want them to know that
I will not bother to cry.
And to all my old loves I want them to know that
I will not bother to cry.
And to those that threatened me burning chains I want them to know that
I will not bother with fear.
Let them come and find me at the mountain top, I’m waiting for them and
I will not bother with fear.130918-killah-p-pavlos-fyssas

They told me not to have “crazy” dreams,
not dare to look at the stars,
but I ‘ve never took them seriously,
I took the whole world in my arms.
They want nowadays to build me a nest,
where there ‘s more fear, ugliness
and a moaning cry and a heavy chain,
carrying the curse of the gods and blasphemy.
I will not shed a tear and I will not be afraid.
I will not let them steal my dreams.
I fly free, high, very high
while they are jealous of my proud unbound wings.
And I’m waiting for other brothers to come here
in this mountain peak waiting for them all,
as long as they don’t cry and fear
living in this well thought fraud.

To those who betrayed me by back stabbing me I want them to know that
I will not bother to cry.
And to all my old loves I want them to know that
I will not bother to cry.
And to those that threatened me burning chains I want them to know that
I will not bother with fear.
Let them come and find me at the mountain top, I’m waiting for them and.. .greek anarchists resist nazi attack
