Fighting for survival in the Calais jungle

Thursday 18th February 2016

ZITA HOLBOURNE explains how she and fellow black activists have overcome racist border guards, obstructive officials and a lack of funds in order to bring desperately needed aid to the refugees in Calais and Dunkirk

FOR the past six months Black Activists Rising Against Cuts (Barac UK) has been carrying out humanitarian work to support refugees in Calais stuck in limbo living in inhumane conditions in the shanty town there. It’s known as the “Jungle” but many refugees we have met find that term derogatory.

On our first visit we joined a peaceful march in Calais organised by local charities, refugees and anti-racist organisations from Britain.

We took aid and gave…

Human pack animals at Europe’s 6m high Spanish Gates

Earning a living on border of Morocco’s Spanish enclave

For Moroccan porters, smuggling goods through the border of Melilla exacts heavy toll and brings a meagre income.

Melilla, Spain – At 6:30am, the sun has not made its appearance yet  and the border of Melilla’s Chinatown quarter is illuminated by the orange glow of street lamps.

The border crossing is a maze of wires and winches that convey a sense of unease and fear.

The  six metre-high border fence across the road, contributes to the feeling of a hostile environment that surrounds Melilla, the tiny Spanish enclave in the northeast of Morocco. Ahead, on the Moroccan side, the murmur of distant shouts and blows can be heard.

A man with a whip strikes at the load carriers. It is believed that local authorities hire Moroccan enforcers to keep order. [Jose Colon/MeMo/Al Jazeera] Continue reading “Human pack animals at Europe’s 6m high Spanish Gates”

Ona Move,

In the summer of 2015 supporters of the Move Organization initiated a petition to push the U.S. Attorney General to investigate the wrongful and ongoing imprisonment, and support parole for the Move 9 who have been imprisoned since August 8th 1978. Our goal is to reach 25,000 signatures, something that will require work and help from you the public.

Today, Wednesday Feb 17th 2016,  we’ve organized a Twitter-storm to help collect these signatures and complete the petition. Here is a link with the instructions on how to participate (this will be going on all day):

Turkish State’s nazi style crimes “Should spark a Worldwide Outcry,”

This week in Europe – innocent children burned alive and blown to bits by our ‘friends and allies’ the Turkish State- NOTHING ABOUT IT IN MY NEWSPAPER. Over 100 civilians massacred after 3 weeks trapped in cellars- NOTHING ABOUT IT ON THE NEWS.impunity

How is this possible? Is it because the US made an agrrement to let Turkey do what they like with the Kurdish people at home, etc? Is it because the EU were blackmailed to shut up as part of the deal to restrict refugees? Or because of the Turkish news blackout and jailings of curious journalists?

Whatever the reasons there’s no excuse for the media to shut up as Erdogan imposes the Nazi Solution in his megalomaniac quest for absolute `power.

Here to redress the balance a tiny bit, we re-publish summaries and links to many shocking posts appearing only in the Kurdish media.

Anna-Sara Malmgren questions silence on Turkey’s state terror

NEWS CENTER – Turkey’s human rights abuses in Kurdistan “should be enough to spark a worldwide outcry,” said Stanford University philosophy professor Anna Malmgren, among the authors of a recent petition calling on Barack Obama to take a public stand on the issue. “We want president Obama to speak out, loud and clear, against the atrocities that are being committed by the Turkish government in the southeast,” said Anna-Sara. She noted that media silence on what she described as “state terrorism” against Kurds prompted the petition.

“We were—and still are—frustrated at the general passivity and media silence here in the U.S. (and also in Europe) with respect to the Turkish governments’ actions,” said Anna-Sara…….”
