Italy: squats and houses raided and evicted, anarchist comrades arrested…

by Squat!net, shared with thanks!        This Thursday 3rd of August, 2017, in the morning, the cops have broken the doors of several rented and squatted houses in Florence, Rome and Lecce, to arrest eight anarchist comrades from Florence.

La Repubblica (Italian mainstream newspaper) says it’s the result of an investigation made by the DIGOS (Division of General Investigations and Special Operations) and the antiterrorist Italian police, regarding two events.

First, an explosive device was put in front of a fascist bookshop linked to Casapound during last New Year’s Eve, and the police bomb-disposal expert lost a hand and an eye.

Second, a Molotov cocktail was thrown against a Carabinieri barracks in Rovezzano (Florence) on 21st of April, 2017.

The cops say they have identified people via bugging telephones, tailings and samplings of biological material (DNA). Continue reading “Italy: squats and houses raided and evicted, anarchist comrades arrested…”

The Intergalactic Week of Zad: August 17th-24th: Amazingly Occupied since 2010

If you’re a French-speaker, or want a video impression of the Zad movement, try this from 2012:

Squats and camps sprung up on fields due for the rumble of the bulldozer in the early 2010s, and it came to be known as the Zone to Defend (zone à défendre, or Zad), inspiring dozens of other similar camps which have in some cases banded together into “back to the land” networks.

Next month will see a major gathering for the Zads in the form of a week-long camp at Nantes, the Intergalactic Week of Zad, building resources and establishing links between the disparate groups.

Organisers said the programme would be relatively open with a few broad themes, and would offer ample opportunity to learn and work on DIY projects:

Mornings will be dedicated to collective working opportunities, including the building of Ambazada, the Intergalactic cabin as well as collective work on various sites of the Zad (e.g., barn construction, carpentry, helping with collective crops, fence maintenance, collecting wood for the bakery, basket making…). Participants are asked to bring a tent, sleeping bag and a leash if you have a dog.

Running from August 17th-24th, logistics for the week only allow for 300 or so people, so interested campers should contact exclaimthezad@riseup.net ahead of time. Continue reading “The Intergalactic Week of Zad: August 17th-24th: Amazingly Occupied since 2010”

Catalonia and Spain set for Head-On Collision over Right to a Referendum

All modern Nation States have quickly become repressive extortionist mafias claiming a 100% control of violence over their subjects.

Does anyone here care if there are 28 or 29 states in the EU?

Yes, for sure. The Catalans, for example,  say their language and culture have been brutally repressed and their wallets robbed by the Spanish State for 300 years.

As if to prove the Catalans right the Rajoy Government has banned any Referendum. prosecuted anyone  trying to organise it, refused to pay over legally agreed funds and uses its controlled Supreme Court to annul anything resembling Catalan rights and initiatives, from refugees to banning bullfighting.

Yet even the ‘left wing’ politicians, the socialists and Podemos in Madrid, anxious for a bigger slice of the coalition pie,  are now supporting State repression against Catalonia. The exception being the SAT union in Andalusia which offers to provide ballot boxes for Catalans living there.

This week the PP government have upped the rhetoric a notch by announcing that the planned Referendum on Oct 1st is an attempted Coup D’Etat, thus preparing the ground for mass arrests, takeover of the police force, suspension of the Catalan Parliament and possible army intervention.

“Like a mad bull in a china shop” the far-right and ultra corrupt minority government continues its criminal campaign of clinging to power by whipping up obscene racist anti Catalan hysteria. Continue reading “Catalonia and Spain set for Head-On Collision over Right to a Referendum”

Road to Revolution: The Barcelona Rent Strike of 1931.

A look at how the Barcelona rent strike of 1931 prepared the ground for the revolution of 1936.

by Dermot Sreenan    The Barcelona Rent Strike of 1931 not only served to reduce rent costs for working class families but was also an education in self-organisation for thousands of workers. It, along with other struggles in those years, created an organised working class that in 1936 made the most successful attempt yet to overthrow capitalism and create libertarian communism.

The CNT was an illegal organisation during the 1920’s and thus many members had been reduced to the role of passive spectators as dedicated militants battled with the police and pistoleros. The dictator, Primo de Rivera, had fallen in 1930 and the new government (who declared a republic in ’31) let the CNT re-emerge.

As anarchists, the CNT wished to widen the union into a real participatory social movement. To do this they had to broaden its realm of influence. They knew that only via mass organisation, participation and struggle could the foundations be laid so that people would acquire the skills to construct a new society. ‘The Free’, original 1986 edition. now a free download

Recently  a few people have asked for  the original version of The Free in digital form so I took in the old book and the German version and had them scanned. This is the result. the scan wasn’t too good and I had to go through it all, fiercely resisting the temptation to improve the text, hopefully I haven’t missed too many typos.

The Free (original short 1986 and 1990 edition)  Epub 1.6mb

‘This short, original version is the same tale but darker and more violent, focusing less on  revolution and more on guerilla struggle’.

.Dr Daniel P. Jaeckle, author of ‘Embodied Anarchy in Ursula K. Le Guin’s ‘The Dispossessed’ said this of the first version of The Free

I should add that the 1986 version has its own interest. It does not often engage in ideological statements, it ends with the more realistic deaths of some characters as opposed to the more romantic ending of the 2007 version, and the speed of the narrative is compelling. I encourage those who can find the 1986 version to read it as well.

In appreciation..  by Emma Goldman

”Suggestions that I write my memoirs came to me when I had barely begun to live, and continued all through the years. But I never paid heed to the proposal. I was living my life intensely — what need to write about it?

Another reason for my reluctance was the conviction I entertained that one should write about one’s life only when one had ceased to stand in the very torrent of it. “When one has reached a good philosophic age,” I used to tell my friends, “capable of viewing the tragedies and comedies of life impersonally and detachedly — particularly one’s own life — one is likely to create an autobiography worth while.”

Still feeling adolescently young in spite of advancing years, I did not consider myself competent to undertake such a task. Moreover, I always lacked the necessary leisure for concentrated writing.

My enforced European inactivity left me enough time to read a great deal, including biographies and autobiographies. I discovered, much to my discomfiture, that old age, far from ripening wisdom and mellowness, is too often fraught with senility, narrowness, and petty rancour. I would not risk such a calamity, and I began to think seriously about writing my life. Continue reading “Emma Goldman’s ‘Living My Life’..read and download here”
