Emma Goldman … ‘What I Believe’ … read and download

“What I believe” has many times been the target of hack writers. Such blood-curdling and incoherent stories have been circulated about me, it is no wonder that the average human being has palpitation of the heart at the very mention of the name Emma Goldman.

It is too bad that we no longer live in the times when witches were burned at the stake or tortured to drive the evil spirit out of them. For, indeed, Emma Goldman is a witch! True, she does not eat little children, but she does many worse things. She manufactures bombs and gambles in crowned heads. B-r-r-r!

Such is the impression the public has of myself and my beliefs. It is therefore very much to the credit of The World that it gives its readers at least an opportunity to learn what my beliefs really are.The student of the history of progressive thought is well aware that every idea in its early stages has been misrepresented, and the adherents of such ideas have been maligned and persecuted. One need not go back two thousand years to the time when those who believed in the gospel of Jesus were thrown into the arena or hunted into dungeons to realize how little great beliefs or earnest believers are understood.

The history of progress is written in the blood of men and women who have dared to espouse an unpopular cause, as, for instance, the black man’s right to his body, or woman’s right to her soul. If, then, from time immemorial, the New has met with opposition and condemnation, why should my beliefs be exempt from a crown of thorns? Anarcha-Feminism.. by Flick Ruby..’real anarchists are always feminist’


by   MARIGREENDOG       For too long anarcha feminists have been labeled as the ladies auxiliary of male bomb throwers. The misconception and manipulation of both feminists and anarchist principles and practice have resulted in the use of sensationalist and ridiculing tactics by the state and its spokespeople.

This has not only polarised the general populace from potentially liberation concepts but has also polarised anarchist from feminists. In the past and more so recently there has been a uniting of these beliefs and Peggy Kornegger’s book; ‘Anarchism; the Feminist Connection’ goes so far as to say that the two genres of thought are inextricably tied although the connection has not been consciously articulated by feminists very often.

Kornegger argues that feminism “emphasis on the small group as a basic organisational unit, on the personal and political, on anti- authoritarianism and on spontaneous direct action was essentially anarchism.

I believe that this puts women in a unique position of being the bearers of a subsurface anarchist consciousness which if articulated and concretised can take us further than any previous group toward the achievement of total revolution.Image result for anarchist feminist

While anarchism has provided a framework for the transformation required, for far too long even this revolutionary ideology has been largely male identified; male articulated, male targeted and male exclusive in both its language and participation.It has therefore been unfortunately lacking in vital analysis especially with regard to the psychological and physical realities of oppression experienced by the majority of the human population: women. ”Suggestions that I write my memoirs came to me when I had barely begun to live, and continued all through the years. But I never paid heed to the proposal. I was living my life intensely — what need to write about it?

Another reason for my reluctance was the conviction I entertained that one should write about one’s life only when one had ceased to stand in the very torrent of it. “When one has reached a good philosophic age,” I used to tell my friends, “capable of viewing the tragedies and comedies of life impersonally and detachedly — particularly one’s own life — one is likely to create an autobiography worth while.”

Still feeling adolescently young in spite of advancing years, I did not consider myself competent to undertake such a task. Moreover, I always lacked the necessary leisure for concentrated writing.

My enforced European inactivity left me enough time to read a great deal, including biographies and autobiographies. I discovered, much to my discomfiture, that old age, far from ripening wisdom and mellowness, is too often fraught with senility, narrowness, and petty rancour. A gifted writer for the anarchist movement, Alexander Berkman left Russia for the United States in 1888 when he was eighteen. Thirty-one years later, after serving a prison term for an attempted assassination, he was expelled to the Soviet Union, a country which he eventually renounced.

This graphic novel about Emma Goldman tells the stories of two women – anarchist and feminist Emma Goldman, one of history’s greatest orators and Dorothy Rogers, an obscure younger radical lost to history, but a key figure in Emma’s last turbulent year in Canada. Despite a shared melancholy, they fight to save a man’s life from certain death in the final poignant act of Emma’s 50 years as a revolutionary.

This true-life, epic story is interwoven in the fictional context of Helen, the writer, and Henry, the artist, as they create this graphic novel on the lives of Emma and Dorothy.

Whip in hand: Emma Goldman’s feminist critique of feminism

Dear old Emma Goldman, throughout her long and prolific career within the anarchist movement of the twentieth century, produced many political texts to which activists return much more frequently than to other anarchist thinkers. Usually these texts are criticized by leftist feminism for being just what they are: anarchist harangues from on the barricade itself. Here we take the thought of Emma Goldman not uncritically as libertarian gospel, but to make it live in your discussion today, and to rescue Emma’s special ability to put her finger right on the spot, in the wound of mainstream feminism of her day, while at the same time opposing the practices of her own fellow militants of the anarchist movement,  whip in hand.

Goldman’s texts are always a concern with passion, joy and the sharing of erotic bodies, key concepts of personal fulfillment without which  struggle and social revolution can not be successful. Even today these ideas, which in her time were a totally unprecedented and radical innovation, go far beyond the usual conceptualizations of anarchist free love that generally reach only to forming couples but without legal contract.
