GreenGas again sent registered mail to PM Harper and Mr McGinty reminding them ( as they have every six months for the last 2 yrs ) that there is a lower cost, clean, safe alternative to tar sands oil or drilling which could save Canadians money and help clean up their environment. No reply at present.

Benefits of Green NH3  (ammonia) over other fuels

  • costs less and zero emissions
  • helps reverse global warming
  • no need to transport fuel (used where it is made)
  • less truck pollution, traffic congestion and fuel tanker accidents.
  • production,transport and storage faacilities exist already, for NH3 fertilizer, and only need extending
  • less need for oil wars ( oil is now not worth the fight )
  • less chance of “oil” terrorism ( harder to attack a million wide spread green fuel machines than one or two oil refineries.)   ETC

NH3 as a fuel

There are three ways to use ammonia as a fuel.

  • Ammonia can be burned in a spark ignited piston engine, behaving quite a bit like an ordinary gasoline engine, except it will perform at compressions of as high as 25 to 1, which is even better than diesel’s 17 to 1 limit.
  • Ammonia will burn in a turbine, which would be used for long term electricity generation, say in a “peaker” style generation facility intended to replace a natural gas generator. This would be a machine in the multimegawatt range.
  • The third method of producing electricity from ammonia is to use it in a fuel cell. This has always been possible but development has favored hydrogen fuel cells rather than direct ammonia fuel cells thus far.

How does an ammonia dual fueled vehicle work?

The simplest implementation of the dual fueled ammonia vehicle conversion is physically similar to a compressed natural gas vehicle conversion. A new on-board tank holds liquid ammonia at only about 150 PSI. Regulators, valves and an electronic control system meter the flow of ammonia to the engine as needed after the engine is started and warmed up on gasoline, ethanol etc. A small amount of gasoline is used to idle the engine, then as the load is increased the additional energy is provided by adding ammonia. This is all handled automatically by the engine control electronic module.

Can I buy a conversion kit for my private car today?

No. Not at this time. Conversion work is currently concentrated with fleet vehicles and other large market applications. Although, with increasing gasoline prices, conversions for private vehicles are coming.

NH3 como combustible
Hay tres maneras de utilizar amoniaco como combustible.

El amoníaco (NH3) puede ser quemado en un motor de pistón de encendido de chispa, comportandose como un motor de gasolina normal, excepto que se presentará en compresiones de tan alto como 25 a 1, que es incluso mejor que 17 a 1, el límite del motor diesel.
El NH3 se puede quemar también en una turbina,  para la generación de electricidad por ejemplo para suplementar la energía eólica en días de calma.
El tercer método de producción de electricidad a partir de amoníaco es utilizarlo en una pila de combustible  (fuel call). La implementación más sencilla de la conversión de un vehículo a amoníaco es físicamente similar a una conversión a gas natural comprimido. Un nuevo  depósito tiene amoníaco líquido a sólo unos 150 PSI. Reguladores, válvulas y un sistema de control electrónico controla el flujo de amoníaco para el motor, según sea necesario. El motor se pone en marcha y se calentará con un poco de gasolina u etanol, etc.  A  continuación, como la carga se incrementa, la energía adicional se proporciona mediante la adición de amoníaco, manejado automáticamente por el módulo de control electrónico del motor.

¿Puedo comprar un kit de conversión para el coche privado en la actualidad?

No, no en este momento. Nunca ha habido ninguna inversión o subsidios, aunque los vehículos probados de NH3 han existido durante 100 años.

Agenda 21: Sustainabilty or buckets of Greenwash??

Here in Spain local right wing council’s are competing to declare support for Agenda 21, Sustainability, Environmental awareness, etc. All good citizens are urged to take part, and the response is good.   Because everyone knows by now that  we’re destroying the life supporting mechanisms of the planet.

Okay it’s super necessary that we all take part, but without touching the rampant consumption that is the base of capitalism, we are all pissing against a gale force wind.

Suddenly AGENDA 21 is all the fashion, nobody mentions that it was first agreed in 1992 at the Rio Summit, and has taken almost 20 years to get off the drawing board. Meanwhile every field of environment, climate and biodiversity crises have been taking giant steps backwards.

It seems like Agenda 21 may  be used by corrupt business and politicos as one more LOAD OF GREENWASH and even an excuse to CUT SERVICES in the name of sustainability. No reason not to support the idea, I support it, while exposing the hypocritical cant of those profiting from destroying our planet.

Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon from August 2009-May 2011.The analysis by Imazon suggests that the Forest Code debate may be a factor in rising deforestation. It found a 363 percent increase in forest degradation — logging and burning of forest that typically precedes deforestation — over the past 10 months, reaching 6,081 sq km. Most of the degradation occurred in major agricultural states: Mato Grosso (42 percent of degradation in May), Para (27 percent), and Rondônia (22 percent). The majority of deforestation also took place in these states: 39 percent in Pará, 25 percent in Mato Grosso, and 21 percent in Rondônia.

More tellingly, two-thirds of clearing occurred on private lands, which are most likely to benefit from changes in the Forest Code. Private landowners — particularly agroindustrial interests — have been pushing Forest Code reform, while small landowners and indigenous groups have generally opposed changes. Accordingly, deforestation over the past 10 months in indigenous territories and areas of agrarian reform (usually small-holder zones) amounted to only 12 percent and 1 percent, respectively. 22 percent of deforestation in May 20111 occurred in conservation areas.

Deforestation in May was highest in the municipality of Altamira, Para, where the controversial Belo Monte dam is to be constructed. Critics say the project will drive deforestation in surrounding areas as well as inundating large areas of forest and displacing thousands of indigenous people. Altamira accounted for 13 percent of total deforestation. It was followed by Porto Velho, Rondonia (8 percent), which serves as a key hub for the newly paved Trans-Oceanic Highway that links the heart of the Amazon to Peruvian ports. The highway will facilitate shipping of agricultural and timber products from the Amazon to China

(06/14/2011) The proposed revision of Brazil’s Forest Code could prevent the country from meeting its lower emissions target and is unlikely to ease rural poverty, concludes a new study by the Brazil-based Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA).

Guatemalan authorities have arrested a former armed forces chief accused of joining in massacres during the nation’s civil war nearly 30 years ago.Retired general Hector Mario Lopez Fuentes, 81, was detained in the capital, Guatemala City, on Friday.Human rights groups have accused him of participating in genocide and crimes against humanity during the military government of Efrain Rios Montt.It is not clear how Mr Lopez Fuentes is likely to plead to the charges.Guatemala’s office of public prosecutions said he was accused of being the intellectual author behind the killings of more than 300 indigenous Maya civilians from the Ixil region in 1982 and 1983.It is the latest high-profile arrest linked to alleged crimes committed during the country’s 36-year civil war.

More than 200,000 people were killed or disappeared during the conflict, the vast majority at the hands of the security forces.
