Animal Rights from an Anarchist Perspective

from  Red Black Green,  shared with thanks.

”Ultimately though it is class struggle that drives change and that means we will not see the end of capitalism and human and animal exploitation until the vast majority embrace it”.

…  In my view animal rights needs libertarian ideas more than ever before. In the recent years the movement in Britain has suffered unparalleled repression. This country is not unique in this either – as animal liberation has across the world, so in its wake has followed a state and corporate backlash.

Anarchism – with its critique of power, hierarchy and capitalism – can help us understand how repression works and how we can work to resist it.

Related imageThe threat of far right and racist infiltration has grown as well. Attempts in the past to use AR as a vehicle for fascism failed. Now thanks to the internet, social media, low morale and  fragmentation – and the naïve belief some hold that fighting for animals takes precedence over everything else- extreme right wing groups are trying to gain a foothold.

These problems don’t affect animal rights alone. Anarchism and the libertarian left also face them.  The Earth First Journal published an article entitled “The New Face of the Radical Right” about Anarchist Nationalism. Sounds like a contradiction in terms, doesn’t it? But some on the so-called radical right are suggesting building alliances with groups such as Earth First! to spread an anti-state but also nationalist/fascist agenda.12729321_1507503332890712_6185680978061315320_n.jpg Continue reading “Animal Rights from an Anarchist Perspective”

shared via freedomnews.org.At Augustine’s Chuch,  41 George IV Bridge

The Edinburgh Anarchist Feminist Bookfair is an all-day event open to everybody, not just anarchists or feminists. We want to provide an open, and welcoming point for people of all genders to learn more about both anarchism and feminism, as well for as folks organising on the ground to explore ideas in-depth together, work through concepts and reach concrete plans.

The bookfair will start at 10:30 and run until 18:00 on Saturday the 21st of July, 2018. As well as space for stalls from publishers, book shops, zine makers and grassroots organising campaigns we’ll be hosting workshops and talks throughout the day on a wide range of issues, from abortion rights to mutual aid, social reproduction theory to housing, sex work to community accountability.

There’ll even be a practical session on vehicle maintenance for women and non-binary folk if we can find somewhere to park!

After the books have been cleared away and the workshops are over it’s time to party and celebrate. We have a cracking after party lined-up and more to add soon!

To help with accessibility, we’ve arranged for a free, professional crèche. See our Childcare page for more details if this is something you’re interested in.

How can I get involved?

If you’d like to help organise the bookfair, fundraise, or host a stall, talk or workshop, email us using the form below or at eafb@riseup.net. We’re particularly looking for folk to help with publicity in the run up to the event and to help with logisitics on the day.

Who are we?

We are a group of anarchist feminists who have come together to organise an anarchist feminist bookfair in Edinburgh in the summer of 2018. Some of us are already members of other groups you may be supportive of, like Sisters Uncut, Edinburgh Action for Trans Health, or AK Press; others are not part of any group.

The group has successfully raised funds for a professionally run crèche and will have food on hand to help with accessibility., email eafb@riseup.net to find out more.

Wed. June 20.. Action Day for our Framed and Tortured Russian Comrades!

From Anarkismo   JUNE 20, 2018 — Russian anarchists are asking for a day of action to highlight the torture and detention of Russian Antifascist Anarchists who are being detained with forced confessions for charges of terrorism.

The Actions: Please take photos of yourselves with messages of support and solidarity for the Anarchist prisoners. You can include signs with the names of those detained and tortured (names are below).Download PDFs of posters HERE: https://crimethinc.com/posters/solidarity-with-the-tortured-anarchists-and-anti-fascists-in-russia

Workers Solidarity Movement Ireland will be holding a demo outside the Russian embassy on the 20th of June at 7pm with such posters and signs.

We hope you can join us in this day of action and solidarity.

Egor Zorin — Arrested October 17-18. He was the first arrestee, and the first to make a confession. Currently under house arrest.

Ilya Shakursky — Arrested October 19. Law enforcement planted two grenades and a pistol under the back seat of Shakursky’s car. Tortured with electricity in the basement of the pre-trial detention center until he confessed. Currently in pre-trial detention.

Vasily Kuksov  (photo from his relatives)— Arrested October 19. Beaten by police and tortured in custody. Guns were planted in his car (the lock of which is broken). He still has not agreed to offer or validate any testimony to the police. Currently in pre-trial detention.Image result for free Russian Anti Fascist Anarchists

Andrey Chernov — Arrested at the beginning of November. Was tortured until admitting guilt. Currently in pre-trial detention.

Arman Sagynbayev — Arrested at the beginning of November in St. Petersburg. Sagynbayev is reportedly experiencing serious health problems and needs medical attention. Brutally tortured. Currently in pre-trial detention.

In the city of St. Petersburg
Viktor Filinkov — Kidnapped in an airport by the FSB on January 23 and tortured until he signed a confession. Currently in pre-trial detention.

Igor Shishkin — Kidnapped and tortured until he signed a confession. In pre-trial detention.Image result for Vasily Kuksov anarchist prisoner

Ilya Kapustin — A witness. Tortured and questioned. He is free.

Starting in the autumn of last year FSB have been arresting antifascists and anarchists organising boycotts of the presidential elections and upcoming World Cup to be held in Russia. They invented an anarchist terrorist group call ‘the Network’ and used the all the creativity of the state to make this fiction appear true. The FSB have planted evidence, kidnapped people and systematically used beatings and torture with electric shocks to produce confessions. Our comrades are being held in unbearable conditions in over-crowded detention centres to break them mentally as well as physically. This cannot continue in silence. The world’s attention will be on Russia with the FIFA World Cup beginning 14 June.
Let’s raise our banners and not let our comrades be forgotten.

Solidarity? (The Case of the Penza and Petersburg Antifascists)

……….’Solidarity protests have been held in Copenhagen, Toronto, Berlin, and New York. Finnish anarchists and antifascists held a demo outside the Russian embassy in Helsinki. In Stockholm, the way from the subway to the Russian embassy was hung with Filinkov’s diary and posters bearing the hashtag #stopFSBtorture.

A concert in support of the arrested antifascists was held at a small bar in Petersburg. The organizers were able to collect 42,500 rubles in donations. By way of comparison, a year ago, at a similar concert in support of Ildar Dadin, who was tortured in a Karelian penal colony, organizers collected 29,000 rubles in donations. But there no incidents at that event, while there was an incident at the Petersburg concert. Ultra-rightwing thugs burst into the bar and started a brawl”……  https://therussianreader.com/tag/anastasia-baburova/

Barcelona: Defending l’Agora occupied Community Site against Fierce Speculation

‘Ágora Juan Andrés’ is an amazing self-run occupied area in the old Raval area where all kinds of activities take place. It’s been going since Oct 2014 and is named in memory of Juan Andres, a local man who was beaten to death by the police in the street.

Manifesto:  l’Àgora must stay in the neighborhood

Defend an occupied green space for the neighborhood!
Speculation threatens us!
The Raval is not for sale!Image result for manifest l'agora amenecat per desahucio

On Wednesday, June 6, the occupied community site ‘Ágora Juan Andrés’ was notified of a claim by the company ‘Triquell y García SL’ against the “unknown occupants” of the plot requesting the eviction of the space and compensation of 20,000 Euros . We went to the Court nº 3  to defend ourselves against their accusations .

Surprisingly, the company is the same that lost the property in June 2007, having 3 pending mortgages as well as 2 procedures for seizure by the Public Treasury and the Town Hall of Barcelona. The site became the property of the SAREB bank but now Triquell y García SL is back as a claimant and owner.
