| A CONTROVERSIAL new law which could lead to fines of a minimum of 60,000 euros for demonstrators has fallen foul of practically every member of the opposition this week – eight parties proposed amendments to it, but these were all rejected.Known as ‘the Gagging Law’, the forthcoming legislation on public order is viewed as effectively making public demonstrations illegal on pain of fines which would wipe out a person’s entire assets.The dissenting parties – which included the PSOE, UPyD and United Left, or IU – objected to fines ranging from 30,000 to 600,000 euros for organisers of demonstrations where these got out of hand, or did not have a council permit. 100k Protest Austerity in Brussels, Police Repression Sparks Riot

Belgian riot police fired tear gas and water cannon’s repressing the demonstrators on Thursday, at the first of what’s to be a series of anti-austerity demonstrations and strikes planned for the coming weeks. More than 100,000 people were on the streets of Brussels where they marched peacefully for almost two hours before violence broke out.The violence flared up at the end of an otherwise peaceful protest, when riot police present at the peaceful march provoked protesters and deployed tear gas, some radical demonstrators hurled objects at riot police and launched attacks with the barriers and against the officials. When I came to the Museum of Memory and Tolerance … [Plaza Juárez, Mexico City], I read a sign printed in black letters on a wall:
“I do not fear repression, I fear the silence of my people.”
The words immediately sent me to the 43 Normal School students and made me think about,
What is it to being a teacher? Is it just about teaching reading and writing?
In Mexico, the Normal Schools [teachers colleges] provide teachers for the most remote and difficult places in the country, where politicians show up only at election time. For a child, an adolescent, to be part of a school is to make friendships and develop a sense of belonging. We all seek to belong to a community. We all seek the benefit of a friend. Companionship…
