The plaintiff organizations – Savannah River Site WatchNuclear Watch New Mexico and Tri-Valley Communities Against a Radioactive Environment (Tri-Valley CAREs), are longtime monitors of sites where nuclear weapons are developed.

They were joined by a tribal group located near the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, the Gullah Geechee Sea Island Coalition.

In June 2021 they filed a lawsuit to compel the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its semi-autonomous National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to perform a thorough environmental review, as required under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), of their plans to ramp up production of the new pits to 80 per year.

Production is to be split between Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and – for the first time – Savannah River Site in South Carolina.

DOE and NNSA had been relying on earlier environmental reviews and failed to provide an analysis of feasible alternatives to this two-site plan.

Some experts argue that none of the new pits are needed for maintaining safety and reliability of the existing, extensively tested nuclear weapons stockpile. JASON, an Independent group of elite scientists that advises the United States government on matters of science and technology (mostly of a sensitive nature) found that existing plutonium pits, some 15,000 of which are currently stored, have a shelf-life of at least a century, and at present have an average age of 42 years.

Instead, the monitoring groups say, the new pits are for “speculative new-design nuclear weapons that can’t be tested because of an international testing moratorium, or alternatively could prompt the U.S. to resume full-scale testing, which would have serious proliferation consequences.” They add that expanded pit production will cost taxpayers more than $60 billion over the next 30 years.

Biggest decline of wildlife in Latin America and the Caribbean

via thefreeonline https://wp.me/pIJl9-Epk

[Many thanks to Peter Jordens for bringing this item to our attention.] The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) recently shared bleak news from the Living Planet Report 2024 confirming that the catastrophic decline in the average size of global wildlife populations in just 50 years (1970-2020), years reveals a “system in peril.”

Biggest decline of wildlife in Latin America and the Caribbean

The report warns that parts of our planet are approaching dangerous tipping points driven by the combination of nature loss and climate change which pose grave threats to humanity.

The steepest drops recorded were in Latin America and the Caribbean (95%), Africa (76%) and Asia–Pacific (60%), followed by North America (39%) and Europe and Central Asia (35%). World Wildlife Fund Dutch Caribbean reports:

Despite success stories, such as the recovering populations of green sea turtles, the global state of nature remains alarming. According to WWF’s 2024 Living Planet Report (LPR), wildlife populations worldwide have dropped by 73% in the last 50 years. Latin America and the Caribbean saw the sharpest decline at 95%. The report warns that the planet is approaching dangerous tipping points, and a huge global effort is needed in the next five years to tackle the climate and nature crises.

Large-scale action: The next five years are critical for Earth’s future, but we have the power and opportunity to change the path forward. WWF calls on governments to increase funding from both public and private sources for large-scale action. They should align climate, nature, and development policies better. Governments and businesses need to stop activities that harm biodiversity and climate, and shift money towards actions that support global goals.

Arjan de Groene, Coordinator of WWF-Netherlands for the Caribbean, explains: “The decline of wildlife populations across the Caribbean shows that the urgency to act has never been greater.

Fenix FC: this is the first federated Trans Male team in Europe… And it’s in Iberia!

The inclusion of trans women in women’s sport generates a great controversy due to the supposed advantages offered by a “biologically male body” but what happens when it is the other way around?

Trans boys face a titanic struggle to break barriers and this is the case of Fénix, which has become the first federated trans male team in Europe and has just debuted in the Catalan League.

It is nothing new for the members of this team to play football, but the way of doing it is different: without discrimination. A year ago, Fénix FC was born with a goal that has become a reality, as it has become the first trans federated team in Europe. 30 footballers playing in the Catalan men’s league thanks to Hugo Marlo’s idea.

Chris Mosier, the transgender triathlete who changed sport: “We are not born male or female, just babies

Change was born from his suffering on the field. Through social networks, he created a safe place, a team where he could feel comfortable inside and outside the game. Some of his players were expelled from their teams and others had never dared to compete.

They started playing in January 2023 and have been sponsored by the Penya Recreativa de Sant Feliu de Llobregat (Barcelona).

Last season they played in the 7-a-side Football League, but this season they have already made the leap to 11-a-side football, in the Catalan fourth division. Since this 2024/2025 season, the first federated team made up of trans players competes in group 22 of the Catalan Fourth Category.

They debuted last September 21 and conceded 19 goals, but the result was the least of their worries after having achieved the dream of becoming the first transgender team within a football category in Spain.

In fact, in three days played, the team has conceded 74 goals and has not managed to score any, but they are not discouraged.

Their victory goes beyond the game. As a shield, a Phoenix, a symbol of what they have achieved from that courage that has made them rise from the ashes.

Russia backs up Iranian show of power, Israeli Regime ‘backs down’ on revenge. Do war clouds scatter?

via AlethoNews By M. K. BHADRAKUMAR at Indian Punchline | Oct 9,’24  thefreeonline- (edited post)- https://wp.me/pIJl9-EmV (t.me/thefreeonline)

Atrocity Inc: How Israel Sells Its Destruction Of Gaza

Israel has apparently shelved its planned attack on Iran. A combination of circumstances can be attributed to this retreat, which rubbishes Israel’s own high-pitched rhetoric that it was raring to go.

Russia aligns with Iran, War Clouds Scatter

Despite Israel’s brilliant media management ( read -Lie Machine-), reports have surfaced that the Iranian missile attack on October 1 was a spectacular success.

One single person was admitted killed, yet it was a display of Iran’s deterrence capability to crush Israel, if need arises. The failure of the US to intercept Iranian hypersonic missiles carried its own message.

      Damage by Iranian missile

Iran claims that 90 percent of its missiles penetrated Israel’s air defence system, exclusively aimed at military bases, yet also creating general terror as sirens screamed and the population took cover.

Will Schryver, a technical engineer and security commentator, wrote on X: “I don’t understand how anyone who has seen the many video clips of the Iranian missile strikes on Israel cannot recognise and acknowledge that it was a stunning demonstration of Iranian capabilities.

(Iran then threatened that if Israel responds it will destroy its few Electricity Generating Stations, ports and main industries.)

Iran’s ballistic missiles smashed through US/Israeli air defences and delivered several large-warhead strikes to Israeli military targets.”

Evidently, in the ensuing panic situation in Israel, as the US president Joe Biden put it, as of October 4, there had been no decision yet on what type of response Israel should mount against Iran.

“If I were in their [Israeli] shoes, I’d be thinking about other alternatives than striking oil fields,” Biden said, fearing his party would lose the elections if oil prices exploded, in a rare appearance in the White House briefing room a day after Israeli officials were still saying that a “significant retaliation” was imminent.

Biden added that Israelis “have not concluded how they’re — what they’re going to do” in retaliation. Biden also told reporters that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should remember US support for Israel when deciding on next steps.

In this pantomime, it is safer to believe Biden, as the honest truth is that without US inputs and practical help, and money — and direct intervention — Israel simply lacks the stamina to take on Iran.

But here too, it is debatable how self-sufficient Israel is vis-a-vis Iran. Reports have appeared that it was the US’ new technological intel  that pinpointed Hezbollah leader Sayyed Nasrallah and other leaders whereabouts, which was passed on to Israel, leading to their assassination.

Israel’s regional dominance narrows down to executing assassination plots, massacring unarmed civilians.

At least 28 murdered by Israel yesterday in yet another school attack on refugees in Jabalia, Gaza.https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/10/10/at-least-28-killed-in-israeli-attack-on-school-sheltering-displaced-in-gaza

(Indeed the very creation of Israel was hastened by a series of terriorist bombings  against the British administration of Palestine after World War 2. Ever since the Zionist fanatics behind the Israeli Regime have relied on an ‘Anything Goes’ policy to achieve its colonial goals.

All with sugar coated false morality and victimhood. )

(Anything goes for Zionism, including Ethnic Cleansing, Mossad Assassinations, Apartheid, Torture, Invasions, blackmail: it seems it has recordings of the antics of the Western Elite on Epstein’s Island Brothel), political bribery, lobbying and now outright Genocide in Gaza and Lebanon.)

Dispatch from Mutual Aid Campaign from Firestorm in Asheville as Helene Death Toll nears 250

      from Firestorm Oct 8 24 via It’sGoingDown by rocinante at anarchist news thefreeonline/ https://wp.me/pIJl9-Emh – T’gram: https://t.me/thefreeonline

Oct 5th- The utopia we dream of becomes

      most visible in the dark.

      Firestorm in Asheville, NC |

Firestorm is a radical anarchist community center and cooperative bookstore in Asheville, NC, which in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, has become a growing hub of mutual aid and autonomous disaster relief efforts in the area. Dispatches have been posted to social media,

For more reports on autonomous organizing in the wake of Helene, check out dispatches from Triangle Mutual Aid, who was also interviewed on the recent episode of This Is America, and this recent article from Margaret Killjoy.

The morning Hurricane Helene hit Asheville, members of our collective sat in the dark, listening to the howling wind and the crack of huge trees falling all around.

When we emerged Friday evening to take stock, a cardboard sign on our co-op’s door read “Community meeting here, Saturday at 2pm. Let’s talk about how we can take care of each other + community.”

That first autonomous act by an anonymous neighbor set the stage for the week, with Firestorm becoming a container for other people’s brilliant, beautiful, and generous self-organizing.

FEMA abandons residents of devastated NC town because it “can’t drive around ‘Road Closed’ sign” – Left to fend for themselves, Bat Cave residents banded together — opening the roads and starting the arduous work of cleanup and recovery. Residents told The Post that they don’t need FEMA now — and at this point, they don’t even want the disaster relief agency to come.

About forty people attended the first meeting.

Nearly four hundred attended the next one.

The gatherings, now a daily anchor, have generated a multitude of connections and volunteer powered projects. Before city officials had finished assessing the damage, community members were sharing supplies, doing wellness checks, and serving hot meals.

Over the next few days, things became more organized. Anarchist arborists collected chainsaws and dispatched crews to clear roads for trapped residents; activists mobilized to build long term water distribution systems capable of delivering 6k gallons/day; bike punks offered free repair clinics; a farmer began driving regular water supply loops to Firestorm from a nearby spring; and an enthusiastic DIY-er set up a tent to distribute dry toilets made from affordable materials.
