Andalusia: Feminists leads the Left in mass Antifascist Demos Tuesday

The left takes the streets against the change of government in Andalusia

Feminist collectives, LGTBI, Podemos, IU and the SAT are  promoting mobilizations in Andalusia before the investiture of a rightwing coalition including the new fascist party Vox, on Tuesday 15th and 16 Jan..

16 de enero: Llamamiento a rodear el Parlamento de Andalucía el día de la investidura

The news of the despicable Vox in power generated rage on social networks and sparked calls for multiple demonstrations and rallies on the investiture dates, on January 15 and 16 .

Podemos and Izquierda Unida  parties yesterday joined the feminist calls to demonstrate and encouraged their respective militants and supporters to attend the events planned next Tuesday: a concentration at 12.00 in the Andalusian Parliament (Seville) and provincial concentrations at 7:00 p.m. in different points of the Andalusian cities.

The mobilization is driven by a large group of feminist organizations that on Wednesday presented a manifesto for what they consider an “attack” by the party led by Santiago Abascal, with its claim to repeal the Law of Gender Violence.

Support demonstrations and actions have also been called in towns and cities across Iberia.

Under the slogans ‘Not a step back in equality’ or ‘Our rights are not negotiated’, posters in purple and blue tones have been distributed quickly through social networks to gather as many people as possible on January 15.

Leaders like Antonio Maíllo, from IU (communist), or Teresa Rodríguez, from Podemos( Left) and candidate from the confluence of both formations, Adelante Andalucía, yesterday supported these initiatives and urged citizens to support  feminist mobilizations.

The LGTBI movement also joins the feminist demonstrations in rejection of the reaction and regression in the conquered rights that they believe the pact between PP and Cs with Vox will bring.

But in addition the Andalusian Union of Workers (SAT) called yesterday a protest called ‘Surround the Parliament’ for the day of the celebration of the full investiture in which the candidate will foreseeably be voted on next January 16 .

In principle, the union has requested authorization for the possible days – the date is still unknown – and aims to surround the Parliament with a human chain, the SAT said in a statement.

This protest will take place from 18:00 hours on the day of the investiture under the slogan ‘Andalusia is not for sale’, with the intention of preventing the change of government with its aim to launch “new attacks” against social rights and democratic institutions and public services, with privatizations and cuts in social policies.

The union indicated that the new government will also mean “a threat to women’s rights and policies of equality and a promotion of sexist violence” and invited other anti-fascist and feminist groups to protest, since theirs will be a “complementary” mobilization » to all the other demos on that day.

REACTION OF THE PATRIARCHY

Both García and Navascués agree that one of the keys to the rise of the far right is as “very clear reaction to the 8M Womens General Strike.”.

A famous quote by Simone de Beauvoir has gone viral in recent days. A phrase from the forerunner of feminism that says: “Do not ever forget that a political, economic or religious crisis will suffice for the rights of women to be questioned again.

These rights are never taken for granted. You must remain vigilant throughout your life. ” In this line Dolores García deepens by stating that “any gap that is opened globally, in the political or economic space, will cause a reinforcement of patriarchy” to explain the current situation.

“Patriarchy becomes very angry when feminism takes center stage, not only here, but in Latin America, all over the world,” something that connects García with the economic system because “the neoliberal model needs women to do care of life work, to corner ourselves around the family, bringing up kids”.

Police violence at an anti fascist counter demo against a meeting of the new VOX party in Girona, Catalonia.

The new Family Counseling or the anti-abortion plan in the PP-Vox agreement are other measures denounced by the Andalusian feminist movement.

THE LGTBI MOVEMENT ADDS

With the same sense of “aggression” to their rights, the Andalusian LGTBI community has joined the mobilizations in the provinces and in the capital. Rafael Gil, president of the association Delta LGBTIQ of the Sierra de Cádiz, calls LGTBI people to second the mobilization.

“They have negotiated with our rights, they have been currency on the table, it seems a shame,” he complains. Gil is firm in the need that “every time the ultra right in our autonomous community touches us, even if only in words, they must have us confronting them, on the street.”

In addition, the historic Grenadian transsexual activist Kim Pérez has announced a hunger strike in protest. “We will not stop being visible in front of this danger to our rights, which we thought was already extinguished, in my case, through a hunger strike, which will represent the anguish that will be renewed now, as long as the new leaders do not declare the will to respect us”.

FUTURE OF THE FIGHT

Beyond the 15th, the Andalusian feminist movement is thinking of ways to counteract the messages of the extreme right. In the opinion of Dolores García, one of the keys is “to work much more in the neighborhoods, because sometimes we do not reach those towns where women or the poor are most vulnerable.

We have to get to those spaces to counteract the discourses of fear that lock up women in the house. ” On the other hand, Alicia Navascués thinks that it is not enough to protect the conquered laws but to denounce “very dangerous speeches of the Citizens Party that seek the commodification of the woman’s body, such as the legalization of ‘rent bellies’ or of prostitution”.

However, both are optimistic. “In the face of such an attack, there is going to be a strengthening, uniting different feelings of feminism,” says Garcia. “From now on we’re going to have a unified, strong feminist movement. We’re going to confront them, and the legislative change for the worse is not going to happen..”.

EZLN warns Zapatistas will not permit ‘Maya Train’ mega Rail project

By: Elio Henríquez    via Chiapas Support Committee

San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas

The Zapatista National Liberation Army (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, EZLN) has said that it would not permit President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s Maya Train project of death and dirty tricks to happen.

It described López Obrador as “crazy” and “crafty,” and therefore, it said, it will defend what it has constructed in the past 25 years.

On Monday, López Obrador arrived in Villahermosa to attend the swearing-in of Adán Augusto López as governor of Tabasco. Upon asking him about the resistance announced by the EZLN to some of his projects, he answered: “They are within their rights, how good that they are going to do it, and many congratulations to everyone.”

In the voice of Subcomandante Moisés, during an event held in the community of La Realidad, municipality of Las Margaritas, in the Lacandón Jungle, the EZLN stated: “Think about how crazy it is that he says he is going to govern for rich and poor. Only a crazy person that is sick in the head can say that; his mind doesn’t work, he is braindead (…).

“He doesn’t know nor understand what he’s saying, and he doesn’t understand because his boss dictates to him what he has to say. It’s simple: you can’t support the exploited and the exploiter, you have to choose one of the two,” he said.

The EZLN criticized, without mentioning him by name, that Lopez Obrador “is very tricky, because (he says) that he is with the people of Mexico and continues deceiving the original peoples, demonstrating that he thrusts himself on the land asking for permission and saying that all the original peoples believe him, but we say that we don’t believe him.”

Masked Zapatista rebels participate in a protest against violence in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas state, Mexico.  The Zapatistas staged a brief armed uprising for greater indigenous rights in southern Chiapas state in 1994.

Upon referring to the ceremony held on December 1 in Mexico City’s Zócalo, where López Obrador received the staff of command from the indigenous peoples, the EZLN expressed: “Only because Mother Earth doesn’t speak, if she did she would say: fuck your mother; she would say: go to hell!”

In the context of the 25th anniversary of the January 1, 1994 Zapatista Uprising, he added: “We’re not going to allow them to come to destroy us,” and he warned: “We’re not afraid of their Nacional Guard, which changed their name in order to not say Army, but they are the same.”

He maintained that López Obrador “is going to destroy the people of Mexico, but principally the original peoples; they’re coming for us, especially for the EZLN.” He reiterated that they are not afraid of the new federal government. “We’re going to fight and we’re going to confront it.”

He remarked: “They’re coming for us, the original peoples. The consulta (vote) that they make is to manipulate the people. They are asking permission to attack us with votes. They are consulting so that they can come to confront us with that dirty trick of the Maya Train” (Tren Maya),” but “if they provoke us, we are going to defend ourselves. We’re not going to allow anyone to come to establish themselves in this territory in rebellion.”

He asserted that the so-called Fourth Transformation “is nothing of a fourth. Those of the third confronted him with facts. (López Obrador) says, for example, that he is going to forgive all the criminals. Like the one who says that he won’t do anything to the murderers of our Compañero Galeano,” murdered in the community of La Realidad in May 2014.

South of the Border: The indigenous people in Chiapas have defended the Zapatista free area for a generation, with a communal, feminist, non-hierarchical and non-tribal culture that has inspired the world.

US backed Saudis hire African Child Soldiers in Yemen Invasion

Saudi-led coalition accused of using Sudanese child mercenaries ‘like firewood’ to fuel Yemen war
Saudi-led coalition accused of using Sudanese child mercenaries ‘like firewood’ to fuel Yemen war
by  AndreeaCampeanu,   .. shared with thanks
by RT     The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen is recruiting Sudanese child soldiers from war-torn Darfur to serve on the front lines, according to a new report claiming children as young as 14 comprise up to 40 percent of some units.

Reports from Sudanese soldiers who’ve returned from Yemen indicate up to 14,000 Sudanese have been fighting for the Saudi-led coalition. Most hail from Darfur, a region still mired in chaos after a prolonged and bloody war that saw 300,000 people killed and 1.2 million displaced from their homes, and many are children, according to a shocking report from the New York Times.

So few are opportunities in war-torn Darfur that some families actually bribe militia officers to take their sons to fight in Yemen, according to the report. The Times interviewed five fighters returning from Yemen who confirmed children as young as 14 comprised at least a fifth of their units. Two soldiers said the proportion was closer to 40 percent. Amsterdam: ADM eviction cancelled by United Nations’ Human Rights Committee

On December 27th 2018, civil servants were met by a welcoming committee at the entrance of the ADM terrain. As announced previously by the mayor, they were sent to check if the ADM was empty of its inhabitants. They were not let in and were asked to make a new appointment which they refused.

Here news and statements published by ADM on the 27th:

Eviction of the ADM cancelled by United Nations’ Human Rights Committee (December 26th. 2018)

We received great news that the United Nations will stand up for our rights, yeah!
This is the statement of our wonderful Human Right’s lawyer Electra Leda Koutra:

“Great great news for “free spaces” across the world. Fulfillment and relief (for now). The ADM Amsterdam stays!!! NO EVICTION TO ANY SPACE THAT DOES NOT RESPECT INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS CAN TAKE PLACE.

The Complaint of 60 ADMers has been communicated to the Dutch Government with request for observations that have to be submitted until 26 June 2019. Then we will comment on them.

The Amsterdam Municipality had adopted a superficial “law and order” approach, based on the final decision of the High Court which was ordering their eviction. However, the Municipality obviously disregarded its own obligation, as regional government, under international law to ensure that an eviction is compatible with international standards and showed intolerance to the applicants’ socio-cultural minority status and the need for relocation of the whole community as a whole (unregistered residents and house boat residents too) in “a site better than the current one”.

Not temporarily, but permanently. Taking into account the needs of individuals and the community. Making “consequences’ assessments” which take into account individual circumstances, such as disability of some community members.

With respect to their fundamental rights, their culture, their need for a space allowing enhanced freedom of expression. I am certain that the Municipality’s cynical stance, as also expressed in the Council Meeting of 20/12, contributed to the indication of an interim measure by the UN.

The Dutch Government will also have to answer on the complaint that the space allowed for expression and free thinking is targeted indirectly, in that the “space” for it is either shrinked disproportionately or over-regulated to a degree not allowing such an expression.

This tendency to sacrifice creativity before profit considerations has been decried by many rights movements globally. The stance of the HRC will affect these movements too.

It is interesting to note that the European Court of Human Rights had recently not only rejected the 53 ADMers’ (in that request) claim for urgent protection, but rejected their application… before it was even lodged. Upon inquiry as to how this is possible, it was argued that according to a recent practice of that Court, an interim measure can lead to the rejection of the whole “underlying application” (as it would potentially be submitted in the future!), if the Court believes that the information it holds is sufficient for considering the case.

The different levels of respect and protection afforded by European and UN mechanisms (in equivalent complaints protected in parallel by the ECHR and the ICCPR) are of wider concern and interest.

The communications between the applicants and the ECtHR were sent to the HRC, which obviously considered that the applicants’ protection, on EU jurisdiction, at all levels, has been inadequate.”

This is the letter that was send by the United Nations Human Rights Court:  LETTER ON ACCEPTANCE OF INTERIM MEASURE REQUEST AND COMMUNICATION OF THE APPLICATION

Statement by ADM residents, as it was read out to the press (at 12.00):

“Yesterday our request to stop the eviction of the ADM site has been honored by the United Nations because it is in conflict with international human rights. This statement is in the interest of all the free-spaces and freethinkers of the world.

For more than 4 years we have litigated in Amsterdam and The Hague for our right to a life of our own and our human rights.
This has not been recognized in Amsterdam and the Netherlands until now.
With the appointment of a green left coalition and the new mayor mrs. Halsema, we expected that this would be different.

For this reason, we were forced to appeal to the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations

The answer from the UN’s HCR was sent to the city council this morning by our Greek lawyer Electra Leda Koutra.

The Dutch government is currently considering this new situation. We expect more news about this within a few hours.

Today, the municipality of Amsterdam wants to enter the ADM area with the enforcement department to initiate the eviction of our community.
We strongly advise the municipality of Amsterdam to refrain from this until the UN’s HCR has issued a final judgment on this matter.

Our wish is that the city and state administrators hold their warm Christmas feelings and not come home from a cold FunFair.

The residents of the ADM

Around 14.00 Amsterdam’ city hall released a statement saying that they will ignore the UN-request. The main points are:

– The judge has irrevocably determined that the municipality must enforce the zoning plan. The site is intended for port-related activities. You can not live there.

– That is why the municipality will enforce the law. Step 1 in that process is that civil servants go to the ADM site to take a look at the situation and consult with the squatters.

– According to the Council, the request to the UN committee does not lead to delay or postponement of the enforcement trajectory.

– The request from the ADM residents at the UN is about whether the sludge fields in the north are suitable as alternatives and comply with international standards.

– According to the Council, the site meets these standards: After all, provisions have been made, such as electricity, water and sanitation, and the level site has been raised.

– The Council notes that the offer to families with children has been made to involve a rented home. The GGD (municipal health department) has also provided care to anyone who needs it.

– The Council still has the strong preference for enforcement by civil servants, without police intervention, resulting in a voluntary departure from the squatters.

– If enforcement does not lead to the departure of the squatters, the site will be evicted at a later time.

This ignoring of the United Nations Human Right’s Council request by the municipality of Amsterdam is of course unheard of and very worrisome, especially since The Netherlands is seeking another term at this same council!

Around 16.00 the municipal enforcement team came to the ADM (instead of between 12.00 and 13.00,  which was previously communicated to us) and demanded access to our terrain. We told them that it was perhaps not the right time, especially since we haven’t heard anything back from mayor Femke Halsema about the UN-interim-measure-request

In the evening of this same day (December 27th. 2018) we did send out a press release:

“PRESS RELEASE

ADM (Amsterdam), December 27, 2018

A new spring for the ADM residents?

This morning our Greek lawyer Electra Leda Koutra sent an urgent request from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) to the Amsterdam city council. The municipality is asked to refrain from vacating the ADM site until a suitable location for residents has been found that meets the international standard for human rights.

The UNHCR has given the municipality 6 months of ‘defense period’. The ADM residents have 6 weeks to complete their extensive objection.

The intended location for ADM residents is the sludge fields of the former water treatment plant in Amsterdam. The municipality has made a number of provisions here that are not sufficient for a suitable relocation of the ADM residents. In addition, there is no solution for the 10 ADM boat occupants, they become homeless.

From a legal point of view, it is true that the ADM site may not be used in accordance with the zoning plan. The Council of State could not therefore decide otherwise to force the municipality to enforce.

On the other hand, according to international human rights protocols, the municipality must ensure at least an equivalent or better location in case of forced departure from a community. With the offer of the sludge fields and no solution for the ADM boats, the municipality remains seriously in default.

Today the municipality wanted to enter the ADM area with the enforcement department to initiate the eviction of our community. The ADM community requested the municipality to refrain from doing so until the UNHCR issued a final judgment on this matter.

The Commission indicated that it did not comply with the request from the largest international institute for the protection of human rights and still sent enforcement to the ADM site. Given the tumultuous developments of the day, the ADM residents did not think it appropriate to lead the enforcers around the terrain on this day.

The residents are open to a conversation with the city council.
