Using rubber bullets and tear gas, Turkish police have dispersed a crowd of several thousand marchers who gathered outside Istanbul’s Taksim Square on International Women’s Day, local media reported, with videos from the scene.

The “Feminist Night March” in Istanbul was one of the many demonstrations held on Friday across Turkey, demanding equality and an end to the historic oppression of women.

Tear Gas and Rubber Bullets on the Streets of Southern France

An eye-witness report from Act 16 of the ongoing Yellow Vest uprising against neoliberalism, by Paul Cudenec of Shoal Collective.

We had just positioned ourselves downwind from the teargas canisters that had been fired towards us from the ranks of riot police protecting the Sous-Préfecture, the French state’s HQ in Alès, southern France.

Then suddenly we were coming under attack from the opposite direction. A squadron of cops was lurking, unseen, on the other side of the modern pedestrianised square and had started firing tear gas from behind us.

Choking and with streaming eyes, we fled down a little side street which, ironically enough, turned out to be dedicated to the “martyrs of the resistance”.

Passers-by, women with young children, stood gawping in the direction of the clouds of chemical warfare following us down the road. Continue reading “Tear Gas and Rubber Bullets on the Streets of Southern France”

International Women’s Day 2019: Thousands Of Women Go On Strike

Tomorrow, for the third year running, the International Women’s Day will be marked by strikes and street actions around the world.

In just a short few years the international women’s movement has grown in strength and confidence as women join in this global movement against the destitution, overwork and violence women face daily.

Women will strike from all the work they do: from offices and factories, from care work and unpaid domestic work, from community work to the bedroom – organising and unionising with some of the most exploited migrant workers in the service industries.

As part of tomorrow’s actions, sex workers will strike to demand the full decriminalisation, and Women’s Strike Assembly will protest against current plans to move trans women to male prisons and for prison abolition.

Eight cities across Britain and Ireland will see women and non-binary people take to the streets, alongside millions of women worldwide. Here is the summary of tomorrow’s events planned for the UK:

March 8 Feminist General Strike plans: Spreading Wildfire

thefreeonline's avatarThe Free

UPDATE: The call for a feminist General Strike, at work and at home  is spreading around the world and extending for more days. Reports are appearing of extensive organising, especially in Spain, Italy, Rojava and Brazil.

Again this year it will be the minority CNT and CGT anarcho-syndicalist trade unions who call the Feminist General Strike on 8th March International Women Workers Day in Spain. This strike registration gives the huge popular  ‘Work and Home’ feminist strike some legal protection against continuous State attacks.

Map of Shame: Mass Graves of Fascist-Catholic Regime still not Opened

Map:  All the known mass graves of the hundreds of thousands of victims of the fascist uprising and the Franco regime.

Spain has done little to give closure to the atrocities perpetrated during the dictatorship. Instead, as Alex W. Palmer explains in a recent article, Spain implemented a political agreement known as the “Pact of Forgetting.” 200,000 people were executed in the dictatorship—mostly by the fascist forces, still more died during the bombings of cities and towns in Spain, and some 370,000 were held in concentration camps.

Spain has exhumed the remains of only 9,000 victims of the long fascist-catholic regime in the last 19 years. A report urges the government to formalize an urgent plan to recover up to 25,000 more bodies in the next five years. This will depend on whether a far right coalition wins the April 2019 election.

In Paterna, some of the bones of 100 victims  found in graveyard 112 are cracked, which could mean that the people executed at the site were tortured. According to the AP’s Parra, archaeologists have asked authorities to launch a criminal investigation into the victims’ violent deaths.
