January 12, 2017    From Free Sean Swain

We received word recently from a friend of Sean’s that Sean is currently on hunger strike and has been placed in a suicide cell.

Although details are still murky, we know that Sean has been without food since December 26th. He was charged with extortion of a deputy warden and had begun a disciplinary process when he began his hunger strike and was placed in a suicide cell.

We know that the prison is recognizing his hunger strike and following the associated procedures, which include taking him to the medical unit every day and weighing him and taking his vital signs. It is unclear whether they are attempting to negotiate with him in any way. Continue reading “SEAN SWAIN IS ON HUNGER STRIKE”

Amazon Uprising against Oil Pollution in Saramurillo (Peru) wins Agreement

The indigenous peoples of Saramurillo (Peruvian Amazon) have held an Uprising for four months to stop the destruction of the environment and constant spills from the Petroperu pumping plant and the obsolete Norperuano Oil Pipeline. (en castellano abajo)

The whole community joined in the 2 month long river blockade in Saramurillo.

by Marc Gavaldà, (Amazon Alert) and Sergi Rugrand (Krasnyi Collective),

There is a corner of the Amazon where the environmental devastation generated by the oil industry have left all passivity behind. This place is called Saramurillo. Since the beginning of September 2016, there has been a rebellion and mobilization of the indigenous peoples affected by the consecutive spills suffered in their territories.

They left their communities and occupied the Petroperú pumping plant. They moved there to prevent their environmental exile, a destination that seemed to be written for them. After months being ignored, the Government agreed to a dialogue with the Resistance Platform. But the negotiation looked complex and tortuous.

These images were leaked out of Moria refugee camp in the island of Lesbos in Greece, exposing the dreadful and inhumane conditions that migrants are being forced to endure in order to survive in – 5°C / 23° F, sleeping in tents, on the frozen ground, under heavy snowfall. The severe weather conditions had been foreseen and expected for many days before, and yet hundreds of people that sacrificed everything to escape to “civilized” Europe have been left to their own demise.

The footage itself was captured on January 7, 2017 by an anonymous refugee, as a desperate message to the world about the appalling conditions they face. These images contradict the January 5, 2017 statement of Greek Migration Minister, Yiannis Mouzalas, when he stated “there are no refugees or migrants living in the cold anymore. uvw-protest

There was a disproportionately large police presence last Saturday at the United Voices of the World demonstration at Harrods Department Store. The protest was called in support of 450 waiters and chefs demanding they receive 100 per cent of their tips from customers, rather than the 25 per cent they are currently receiving, which reduces the salary of each member of staff by up to £5,000 per year. To put this in context, this theft of up to 75 per cent of staff tips by management comes in a year when Harrods announced that their pre-tax profits for 2015-16 had increased by 19 percent to £168 million, sales had risen by 4 per cent to £1.4 billion, and the owners had just paid themselves a juicy £100.1 million dividend. Architects for Social Housing turned up in support of this protest, as did members of Class War, while the Left –…
