Swindled, evicted and denounced as ‘The New Nazi of Spain’

On Saturday, Popular Party Secretary-General María Dolores de Cospedal, number two of the governing party in Spain, said that she knew she was going to get criticized, “but this is pure Nazism.” On Sunday, rather than resigning, she repeated it. For more precision, she added that going to a politician’s house to “harass” him “is a totalitarian attitude comparable to what occurred in the thirties in a European country.” A reference to Nazis marking the homes of Jews.

But these “Nazis” are folks who are standing up to the banks and draconian mortgage laws that the government is hell-bent on protecting. Continue reading “Swindled, evicted and denounced as ‘The New Nazi of Spain’”

American comedian Patton Oswalt posted a thoughtful response to the Boston bombings on his Facebook wall, reflecting on the goodness that remains in the world:

…I don’t know what’s going to be revealed behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.

But here’s what I DO know. If it’s one person or a HUNDRED people, that is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the percent of the population on this planet. You watch videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out…This is a giant planet and we’re lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. The Bear, Wolf and Lynx: coming back in Spain

It’s not all bad news in Spain, while environmental laws are being repealed (eg the  Coastal Protection law),  CO2 reduction measures scrapped, clean energy subsidies abolished  and budgets for parks and reserves decimated, some more progressive measures are still filtering through the system. also one side effect of people abandoning ‘uneconomic’ farms is more habitat for wildlife. Now the almost extinct lynx, brown bears and above all wolves are making a comebeck.

‘Court confirms the ban on wolf hunting south of the Douro River.  The lynx population triples in Andalusia in the last ten yearsfoto-j-luis-rodriguez

Guards clashed with prisoners as they sought to move hunger strikers out of communal cells [GALLO/GETTY]
Guards have swept through communal cellblocks at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp and moved the inmates into one-man cells in an attempt to end a hunger strike that began in February.”Some detainees resisted with improvised weapons, and in response, four less-than-lethal rounds were fired. There were no serious injuries to guards or detainees,” Navy Captain Robert Durand said in a news release on Saturday.

He said the action was taken because detainees had covered windows and surveillance cameras to block the guards’ view into the cellblocks. Continue reading “Guantanamo guards try to break Hunger Strike”
