wild fireFossil fuel divestment campaign: “If it’s wrong to wreck the climate then it’s wrong to profit from that wreckage.”

On the recent Do the Math tour, Bill McKibben, Rev. Burn the Rich, not Fossil Fuels banner hung in Grand Rapids

picture-15The Media Release states as follows:

System Change, Not Climate Change
The governments of the world are currently meeting at the Global Climate Summit in Doha, but it is clear that the leaders of the wealthier countries of the world, like the United States, are opposing any significant changes that are necessary to reduce carbon emissions and avoid further human suffering and environmental destruction.
Global Climate Summits have been taking place for nearly 20 years now and the global powers have been unwilling to stop the devastating effects of both the burning of fossil fuels and the economic system of Capitalism, which is the root cause of climate change.
Almost every day there is new evidence of glaciers melting, waters rising, intense rains, hurricanes, drought, heat waves and unpredictable weather patterns.
Look at the damage that Hurricane Sandy did on the east coast.
We all know something is not right. The world leaders will not solve this and the media will not tell us the truth about the seriousness of climate change.

It is clear to us that change will only come about from the grassroots, from a rejection of the system of Capitalism and a movement towards climate justice.
We hung two banners – There Is No Planet B – to illustrate the urgency of the problem, and – Burn the Rich, Not Fossil Fuels – to name the culprits for our current climate predicament.

Serial of The Free. Ch 21. Remaking James

Act two  Chapter twenty one

Remaking James

-‘Dangerous Anarchist Subversives.. High Value Priority’-

James paused, white-faced and sweaty, pinched his long nose and glanced casually behind him. Then he hurried on, a tall figure in black, with brown sunglasses and a plastic bag.

He’d taken a taxi to the city edge of the Ragwort area, had come in a side lane to avoid any cameras.

A narrow street of boarded shops and gaily whitewashed squats. What a mistake to say he’d wear black! No one wore black, not on the hottest day in history, and he stood out a mile, the old men were pottering about in their swimming togs.

James glanced back again. -‘Relax you idiot.’- This was after all a no-go area for police. Continue reading “Serial of The Free. Ch 21. Remaking James”

Climate Chaos caused #Bopha /Pablo. Oil Companies to be Sued ??

Final Update 25 dec 2012   Over 1000 dead.   Despair Sweeps bopha Survivors http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2012/12/201212237565413785.html

Super Typhoon BOPHA with 275kph winds to hit Philippines.. update  the massacre toll has risen to at least 500 with more than 400 others reported missing and about quarter of a million people made homeless. At least three cities on Mindanao’s east coast remain cut off after bridges collapsed and roads were swept away by floodwater.

As they become more common, climate related disasters may allow prosecution of the big Oil Companies, which they could be sued for billions for willfully dumping CO2 in the air for profit, with clean alternatives available.

DOHA, Qatar — A delegate from typhoon-hit Philippines demanded Thursday that ministers at the United Nations climate talks put aside their political differences and take bold steps to combat global warming. In an emotional appeal, Naderev Sano spoke of the "heartbreaking tragedy" of Typhoon Bopha, which has so far killed more than 350 people and left hundreds of thousands homeless, and urged participants at the U.N. climate conference in the Qatari capital to stop procrastinating on committing to halting the dangerous trend.

You cannot say that one climate massacre is caused only by climate change, but statistically we know that they are. Just as a child with thyroid cancer living next to Fukushima may have contracted it by chance, but if the cancer rate has increased 1000%, then nine out of ten victims are caused by the Nuclear meltdown.

To take that analogy further, if ten possible victims of Climate Chaos sued Exxon, nine of them would be real victims, only we can’t say which nine…. Continue reading “Climate Chaos caused #Bopha /Pablo. Oil Companies to be Sued ??”

Climate Criminals to push us over a Cliff: PWC report

Driving much faster to the climate cliff

by Jordan Nichols     A recently released PricewaterhouseCoopers (or PwC) report, titled Too Late for Two Degrees?, suggests that, to meet even a goal of a 4° C increase in global mean temperatures the world must quadruple our current rate of decarbonization.  (Yes, this is that PwC — the “Big 4” accounting firm and the largest professional services firm in the world.) This is the most alarming study I have come across in months.

A 4o C global warming is double the threshold climate scientists will say must not be crossed to avoid disastrous impacts of climate change within this century and beyond.  It will take a massive, concertized international effort by both developed and developing nations to stop short of this ‘climate cliff.’ Continue reading “Climate Criminals to push us over a Cliff: PWC report”

Climate Heroes Close Power Station for 7 Days

No Dash For Gas ends the UK’s longest power station occupation

By Martin Wainwright    The last of 17 climate change campaigners perched on a power station tower for a week have abseiled down to be arrested, ending the longest occupation of a plant in the UK.

The group called it a day after using their 300ft-high platform for a range of stunts to encourage debate on carbon emissions and what they called the government’s “dash for gas”. These included solar panels, a portable toilet and a kite flown to rig up a rope walkway between two cooling towers, and mock last week’s coalition row over windfarms.
