Who are called to strike?
All women are called to strike. The feminist strike is not a strike to use, not only affects factories, offices or offices: it is a call against any type of violence that women experience as women in order to demonstrate that, if they stop, they for the world. Therefore, it includes them all.

It is also a labor strike that wants to put on the table inequalities such as the wage gap, the ‘glass ceiling’ – the extra difficulties that women have to reach management positions – the precariousness of women’s work, the reduced days imposed or the feminization of poverty.

Do I need to be an affiliate to cover the law?

Why is it celebrated on March 8?
March 8 is International Women’s Day. ¿Quiénes están llamadas a hacer huelga?
Todas las mujeres están llamadas a la huelga. La huelga feminista no es una huelga al uso, no solo afecta a las fábricas, oficinas o despachos: se conforma como una llamada contra cualquier tipo de violencia que viven las mujeres por ser mujeres con el fin de demostrar que, si ellas paran, se para el mundo. Por lo tanto, las incluye a todas.
A las que tienen empleos remunerados y a las que trabajan en su casa o en las de otros, a las que cuidan niños, mayores, o personas dependientes, a las de las ciudades, a las de los pueblos, a las de todos los orígenes, a las de todas las identidades. A todas ellas, esta huelga las invita a parar, a dejar por unas horas de sacarlo todo adelante para que la sociedad se dé cuenta del valor que aportan.
¿Qué significa una huelga feminista?
La huelga del 8M es feminista porque no es una huelga al uso, no se limita a una huelga laboral. En primer lugar, la del 8M es una huelga de cuidados, una huelga del trabajo doméstico, del soporte emocional. El 8M se propone que las mujeres dejen de realizar todas esas actividades, tan invisibles, muchas veces no pagadas y de las que suelen encargarse ellas. Se trata de hacer ver que, sin todo ese trabajo silencioso, el resto del mundo se cae, y es necesario ponerlo en valor.
La convocatoria implica, también, una huelga de consumo, es decir: llama a no ir a comprar ese día para denunciar que los cuerpos de las mujeres no son reclamos de consumo, y la tiranía estética a la que las somete el mercado.

También es una huelga laboral que quiere poner sobre la mesa desigualdades como son la brecha salarial, el ‘techo de cristal’ —las dificultades extra que tienen las mujeres para alcanzar puestos de dirección—, la precariedad laboral de las mujeres, las jornadas reducidas impuestas o la feminización de la pobreza.
Del mismo modo, están llamadas a la huelga todas las mujeres del sector educativo para reclamar “una educación pública, laica y feminista”.
¿Quién la convoca?
Está coordinada por la Comisión 8 de Marzo, que integra a multitud de colectivos feministas, y que lleva trabajando desde 2017 -el 8 de marzo de ese año ya se propuso un paro de mujeres durante 30 minutos al mediodía- para lograr llevar esta iniciativa a cabo.
Todos los grandes sindicatos se han sumado a esta convocatoria, aunque con propuestas diferentes. UGT y CCOO registraron una convocatoria de paros parciales de dos horas por turno, mientras que CNT y CGT lo han hecho apoyando los paros totales las 24 horas. Puedes elegir sumarte a cualquiera de las dos modalidades, aunque las organizadoras llaman a una huelga de 24 horas.
Una característica importante de esta huelga es que se ha promovido y organizado de abajo hacia arriba, y no al revés. Es decir, la iniciativa de la huelga ha nacido primero en las calles, en los barrios y distritos y se ha macerado en asambleas abiertas. No ha sido una propuesta de los sindicatos, sino del movimiento feminista.
¿Necesito estar afiliada para que me cubra la ley?
Es necesario que, para que una huelga sea legal, la convoquen los sindicatos. Sin embargo, una vez hecho esto, cualquier persona puede secundarla, esté o no afiliada. Puesto que los sindicatos no pueden convocar una huelga sólo para mujeres, ésta convocatoria también ampara a los hombres que decidan no asistir a su puesto de trabajo. Como toda huelga, si decides sumarte al paro, esto tendrá repercusiones sobre tu salario de ese día, que variará dependiendo de si la realizas de forma parcial (dos horas) o el día completo. No es necesario que avises en tu trabajo con antelación de si secundarás o no la huelga.
¿Puedo sumarme a la huelga siendo hombre?
Legalmente, los hombres tienen derecho a sumarse a la huelga feminista. Sin embargo, la Comisión 8M explica que, si los hombres también hacen huelga, se pierde el sentido que diferencia la huelga feminista de la huelga general: visibilizar “los huecos” que quedarían si las mujeres dejasen de llevar a cabo todas sus actividades. Por lo tanto, las organizadoras solo están convocando a las mujeres.
¿Y si soy hombre y quiero participar?
Desde el movimiento feminista se ha recomendado que los hombres que quieran dar apoyo a la huelga feminista lo hagan a través de otras acciones, como cubrir a sus compañeras en el entorno laboral o estudiantil para que ellas puedan no asistir, encargarse del cuidado de menores, mayores o personas dependientes para desahogar a las mujeres que normalmente lo hacen, y otros métodos para facilitar que las mujeres sean las verdaderas protagonistas ese día y encuentren el menor número de trabas posibles para ello.
¿Habrá movilizaciones también ese día?
Sí, hay organizadas marchas y movilizaciones en las distintas ciudades españolas. Además, cada ciudad, pueblo o distrito está convocando distintas actividades durante el día que se pueden consultar en las redes sociales y la página web de la Comisión 8M.
La marcha que se celebrará en Madrid, y que se espera que tenga un seguimiento masivo, al igual que ocurrió el año pasado, saldrá desde Atocha a las 19.00 h y llevará a cabo un largo recorrido hasta desembocar en la Plaza de España.
¿Por qué se celebra el 8 de marzo?
El 8 de marzo es el Día Internacional de la Mujer. Esta fecha conmemora el 8 de marzo de 1909, cuando 129 empleadas de la fábrica textil Cotton de Nueva York fueron asesinadas al prender su propio dueño fuego a la fábrica mientras todas ellas se encontraban dentro haciendo una protesta que exigía derechos laborales.
Además, el color del feminismo es el violeta porque, según se dice, el humo que brotaba de aquel incendio era color violeta, como las telas que allí se encontraban ese día. Así, en un Congreso Internacional de Mujeres Socialistas en 1910, la política y pensadora comunista Clara Zetkin decidió proponer dicha fecha como el Día Internacional de la Mujer en homenaje a las trabajadoras de Cotton.
