Act Three

Chapter twenty seven

Imploding Institutions

-‘running and laughing together down the concrete highway’-

Barry stood up, calm as usual, and surveyed the scene, at nine a.m., in the big, low, badly lit basement. There were about two hundred of us there, all sweating buckets, mostly men, and stripped off to the waist.

The place was buzzing with loud excited talk. All the tattooed Clanners milling down the back, in kilts and thongs and caps and hanging pockets.

Young fresh faces and faces lined and balding. some contending with wobbly bellies.  Others old already, with alcohol and frustration, plus a bit of hard labour as well.

Muscles bulging and males bonding. Continue reading “Serial of The Free. Act 3 Ch 27. Imploding Institutions”

Glimpses of Social Revolution… Greece and Spain

Inside the Greek (and Spanish) parallel economy: glimpses of Social Revolution…

Quiet, unassuming social revolution is often the successful step-sibling of the more confrontational (often failing) variety. Across the southern rim of Europe, where austerity and insurrection goes hand-in-hand, parallel economies are taking over daily life, particularly in Spain and Greece.

Here we focus on what is happening in one part of Greece, in the town of Volos, and also provide a reprise on what is happening with the parallel economy in Spain generally. Take Volos: in the market no customers are carrying money – they have none.

But they are buying food and other essentials – not on credit, but via their own currency. With this currency they buy clothes, electrical appliances and foodstuffs. People are happy. They help each other. In a strange way, this is utopia.

And all this in a country that has a failed economy and is the butt of jokes across (northern) Europe. So who’s laughing now? Continue reading “Glimpses of Social Revolution… Greece and Spain”

ADBUSTERS TACTICAL BRIEFING #40

snakeSix Revolutionary Scenarios for the Year Ahead

Hey all you dreamers, schemers and expectant souls out there….

In 2012, people all over the world shook off the dust of ignorance and idleness and began to fight for a future that computes. Freedom fights broke out across the globe: student uprisings in Quebec, Mexico and Chile, Arab Spring 2.0 in Egypt, austerity protests in Spain, Greece and the UK, Pussy Riot in Russia, the tiqqunists in France, the Zapatistas in Mexico, the indignados in Spain, resistance and protests across Japan, China, Tibet, and most recently, #idlenomore across Canada.

The global wake up calls of 2012 could intensify and culminate in a Global Spring … fierce revolts, insurrections, uprisings, regime changes … stunning mind-shifts in all areas of life!

Here are six revolutionary scenarios that could unfold this year: Continue reading “ADBUSTERS TACTICAL BRIEFING #40”

#Greece: Fighting for Revolution as Capitalism Falls

occupy resist produce Greece: Fighting for Revolution

Greece stands at a crossroads. Either austerity or social revolution. The latter has been happening anyway with the parallel economy booming. The state is resisting, but so are the people.
The video below is a compilation from a number of sources and includes footage of confrontation over 2011-12. It has been a busy two years. 2013 will not be an exception. As with many other parts of the world – Chiapas, Catalonia, and the pockets of resistance everywhere – we may be witnessing the death throes of capitalism.
If Greece was Syria, the US would be in there arming the rebellion. Instead it’s up to us to provide support – as with the International Revolutionary Solidarity Movement or the International Brigade – or by creating our own version, where possible, of the parallel economy where we live.

Manchester, Houston: An Environmental Battleground

no Tar Sands31 Dec

On Thursday, December 27th, in Houston, TX, residents of Manchester gathered with allies to issue new demands on Valero. “We demand to know what you are forcing us to breathe!  ¡Exigimos saber lo que nos están obligando a respirar!”

The community came together in a celebration of unity and strength.  Manchester is populated almost completely by Latin@s, and surrounded on all sides by industry.

A massive Valero refinery looms over the community’s only park and its smokestacks poison the people who live there 24 hours a day 365 days a year.  Manchester is plagued by a long list of diseases and ailments including asthma, respiratory disease and inflammation, infertility, birth defects, and a myriad of deadly cancers.  The National Disease Clusters Alliance reports (pg. 2) that children living within two miles of the Houston Ship Channel have a 56% higher likelihood of developing leukemia than those who live more than ten miles away. Annus Horribilis

Dec 31,   2012 was the worst year for the environment in living memory.

By George Monbiot,

It was the year of living dangerously. In 2012 governments turned their backs on the living planet, demonstrating that no chronic problem, however grave, will take priority over an immediate concern, however trivial. I believe there has been no worse year for the natural world in the past half century.

Three weeks before the minimum occurred, the melting of the Arctic’s sea ice broke the previous record(1). Iconic remnants of the global megafauna – such as rhinos and bluefin tuna – were shoved violently towards extinction(2). Novel tree diseases raged across continents(3). Bird and insect numbers continued to plummet, coral reefs retreated, marine life dwindled. And those charged with protecting us and the world in which we live pretended that none of it was happening…. Continue reading “2012.. Worst ever Year for the Planet”
