How “Sustainability” Became “Sustained Growth”

The draft and probably final declaration is 283 paragraphs of fluff. It suggests that the 190 governments due to approve it have, in effect, given up on multilateralism, given up on the world and given up on us.

The Rio Declaration rips up the basic principles of environmental action. In 1992 world leaders signed up to something called “sustainability”. Few of them were clear about what it meant; I suspect that many of them had no idea. Perhaps as a result, it did not take long for this concept to mutate into something subtly different: “sustainable development”. Then it made a short jump to another term: “sustainable growth”. And now, in the 2012 Earth Summit text that world leaders are about to adopt, it has subtly mutated once more: into “sustained growth”…. Rio de Janeiro Manifestantes ligados à Via Campesina Internacional, que congrega movimentos sociais de pequenos agricultores de diferentes países, realizaram na manhã desta quinta-feira, 21, um protesto contra produções baseadas no uso de agrotóxico e monocultura. O ato aconteceu dentro do Pier Mauá, onde foi instalado o AgroBrasil, espaço coordenado pela Confederação da Agricultura e Pecuária do Brasil (CNA). A entidade é presidida pela senadora Kátia Abreu (PSD-TO), uma das principais lideranças da Frente Parlamentar de Agropecuária, a Bancada Ruralista.

O AgroBrasil tornou-se a principal base utilizada pelos parlamentares ligados ao setor e empresários durante a Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre Desenvolvimento Sustentável, a Rio+20. Com apoio de Monsanto e JBS, entre outros, o espaço virou uma feira de negócios com expositores oferecendo alternativas para ampliar a produção e com monitores defendendo e explicando a importância do uso do veneno para aumentar a produção. Até simuladores de máquinas utilizadas na aplicação foram instalados.

Com gritos, música e cartazes, os manifestantes procuraram chamar a atenção dos demais visitantes para o fato de o Brasil ser hoje líder no uso de agrotóxicos no planeta e as conseqüências relacionadas a uma produção de alimentos cultivada com veneno. Uma maquete, na qual os expositores exibiam o que consideram modelo ideal de agricultura, com amplas áreas de pasto, monocultura de eucalipto e grãos, foi coberta de cartazes e manchada de tinta. The agents have come by balconies with ladders and have burst the door of the building to the surprise of the people living there, because the trial court ordered 22 of Barcelona’s criminal case file two years ago it was understood an abandoned building for two decades and, therefore, was not committing any criminal offense against property developer Camat, owner of the property. 5th May..Climate impact day..Connecting the dots..

Freak weather is not climate change… up to a point..when it suddenly becomes clear fromn all the evidnce, that runaway climate change is happening.

Finally we can join up the dots.

Thousands worldwide to “connect the dots” between climate change and extreme weather this weekend Anyone and everyone can participate in this day.

Many of us do not live in Texas, the Philippines, or Ethiopia — places deeply affected by climate impacts. For those communities, there are countless ways to stand in solidarity with those on the front-lines of the climate crisis: some people will giving presentations in their communities about how to connect the dots.

Others will do projects to demonstrate what sorts of climate impacts we can expect if the crisis is left unchecked. And still others of us will express our indignation to local media and politicians for failing to connect the dots in their coverage of “natural disasters.”

On Wednesday, April 18, at approximately 16:00 Eastern Time, U.S. Federal authorities removed a server from a colocation facility shared by Riseup Networks and May First/People Link in New York City. The seized server was operated by the European Counter Network (“ECN”), the oldest independent internet service provider in Europe, who, among many other things, provided an anonymous remailer service, Mixmaster, that was the target of an FBI investigation into the bomb threats against the University of Pittsburgh.

“The company running the facility has confirmed that the server was removed in conjunction with a search warrant issued by the FBI,” said May First/People Link director Jamie McClelland. “The server seizure is not only an attack against us, but an attack against all users of the Internet who depend on anonymous communication.”

Away from its busy capital city and famous canal, Panama is one of the world’s most ecologically diverse nations.

Yet huge new hydroelectric dam projects now underway are seeing pristine rivers damned and virgin rainforest flooded.
The government says it is vital for economic growth, big business is cashing in and even the UN has awarded carbon credits on the basis that the resultant energy will be ‘sustainably’ produced.

But for the indigenous Ngabe people – whose homes are vanishing under water – it is a catastrophe. So they have been fighting back. Filmmaker Glenn Elis went to Panama for People & Power to find out more.

veta La Palma. Aqua-permaculture in Andalucia

This video is a bit deceptive on the reasons behind this great farm.

It’s because it’s next to the Donaña Park that the owners had to be sustainable, in general all Spanish enterprises are the exact opposite. Another question is that the location is pretty unique, between 2 big rivers by the sea. That said it”s an inspiring project.
