After viciously attacking peaceful protestors for 36 hours with tear gas and pepper spray to hold onto the area, Turkish police retreat as thousands of protesters pour into Istanbul’s Taksim Square….

Police have started withdrawing from a main Istanbul square to allow in tens of thousands of protesters campaigning against the potential construction of a shopping centre in a park.

Water cannon and tear gas were used as protesters tried to reach the square and the parliament building in the capital, Ankara.

It all started with a peaceful protest over plans to redevelop the Gezi Parka but it has become bigger than just an environmental protest. It is now a demonstration against the Islamist-rooted government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

First pictures, then videos of brutal police attacks on unarmed protesters in Istanbul caused the protests to spread to other cities, with riot police being deployed in Ankara overnight. Continue reading “Turkey: Mega victory demos as killer police retreat”

Turkey arrests anti-government protesters

At least 60 people detained as Istanbul protest spreads to Ankara and Izmir, with tear gas sprayed and many injured.

Turkish authorities have arrested dozens of people protesting in the fiercest anti-government demonstrations the country has witnessed in years, with riot police firing tear gas on demonstrators in Istanbul and Ankara. At least 60 people were detained on Friday as they protested in Istanbul at a rally which began over the demolition of a park, but which turned into a broader protest against what they see as an increasingly authoritarian government.”The protesters are saying that this is not about trees anymore,” said Al Jazeera’s Rawya Rageh, reporting from Istanbul.

Several thousand people had attended the Istanbul protest, and there is “an assortment of tear gas cannisters everywhere” in the city’s main Taksim Square, she said. Continue reading “Brutal attack on Save Trees Demo sparks Turkey Uprising”

-‘Flocks of dunlin and starlings, wheeling as one soul’-

Maxie narrating

When the tide is high, which looks like nearly always here, flocks of wader birds arrive in circling swarms. Criminal immigrants, like me, in the waterlogged parks. Illegally colonizing the earth, between the sandbanked middle class suburb, the decrepit blocks of flats, and the ex industrial estate.

Flocks of dunlin and starlings, wheeling as one soul.

Flights of curlew with their wonky beaks.

Leaning out the gaping window, I listen long for their lonely whistles.

I’ve been waiting in this ninth floor flat for five hours.

Being a terrorist is no fun. Continue reading “Serial of The Free Ch 49. Bye Bye Maxie Moon”

Maria of Pussy Riot hunger strikes: UPDATE: now in hospital

UPDATE: Pussy Riot member on hunger strike moved to hospital

A member of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot who went on hunger strike in jail last week has been taken to hospital. Maria Alyokhina was moved to a hospital in her prison colony in the Urals town of Berezniki, the husband of one of her bandmates told the Associated Press. Alyokhina began her protest after being barred from attending a parole hearing. She and two other members of the Pussy Riot group were jailed after staging an anti-Vladimir Putin protest in a Moscow cathedral in February 2012. One, Yekaterina Samutsevich, had her sentence suspended on appeal last October. Another, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, was denied parole last month. In a letter published by her lawyers earlier this week, Alyokhina claimed prison officials were attempting to turn fellow inmates against her by holding a security crackdown in advance of the parole hearing. Alyokhina previously spent five months in solitary confinement after claiming that officials deliberately lodged her with hardened criminals and encouraged them to intimidate her.The Pussy Riot trio were jailed for two years last August after being convicted of a breach of public order motivated by religious hatred. The prosecution prompted worldwide condemnation, with Sir Paul McCartney among those calling for the band members to be freed.
