Transgenic Salmon, Beef, Pork, Apples.. made Legal by CETA in Spain without Labels

What we will Force Fed with the CETA treaty

10 Nov 17 | | LEER ORIGINAL EN CASTELLANO AQUI  by  Esther Vivas – Scientific Council of ATTAC Spain

The news does not  occupy big headlines, but its impact on our daily lives is important;  it will end up deciding what we eat.

The controversial trade agreement between the European Union and Canada, better known by its acronym in English CETA, is already being applied provisionally throughout the continent.

Meat treated with hormones and growth promoters, food colors prohibited so far or transgenic apples and salmon are some of the controversial foods that it brings us. Continue reading “Transgenic Salmon, Beef, Pork, Apples.. made Legal by CETA in Spain without Labels”

New Catalan Strike for Prisoners and Republic amid Far-right Repression

Update Update Update The General Strike in Catalunya called for Wed 8th Nov by small Intersindical-CSC trade union has been supported by the USTEC education union and the main Republican civil groups, Òmnium and ANC .

The strike is to protest the jailing of protest leaders and Government ministers, the occupation of paramilitary security forces, the imposition of Direct Rule, etc

However the majority CCOO (ex comminist) and UGT (ex socialist) trade unions again came out against it and the anarchist  CGT made a statement in favour but left it to their members to decide individually, arguing they haven’t time to consult them.

All schools and Universities and public offices will certainly close down as well as cities like Girona and LLeida which have a native Catalan majority.

But the bosses organisation Foment de Treball have taken a High Court case to declare the General Strike Illegal.

The neo-fascists in Madrid have been hiring fleets of coaches and even trains to bring in thousands of violent right wing ‘demonstrators’, as seen at last weekend’s huge demo openly led by thugs sporting swastikas, zieg heils and Francoist symbols.

The insidious campaign is to split Catalan society down the middle. over 40% of the population are workers from Spain, most are well integrated over generations with families who consider themselves Catalan. Mixed marriages are common and normal with the 2 languages coexisting perfectly in their homes. Tension between the communities has been minimal (as in ex Yugoslavia before politicians whipped up xenophobia for personal power).

The anarchists too are divided, actively calling and sup`porting the 3rd Oct General Strike from an anti nationalist workers standpoint, but reluctant to continue if a nationalist civil conflict in Catalunya is provoked.

The Spanish nationalist media these days has become a torrent of anti Catalan hatred and outright lies. With an explosion of racist attacks the General Strike on Wednesday and the ‘Mega Demo’ on Sat 11th could finally break the self imposed pacifist stance of the Catalan republicans, which is what the State needs to justify mass criminalization of the majority democratic movement.

we include below a translation of a key text

A triumph of popular mobilization

by LLuita Internationalista  on Barcelona Indymedia    The proclamation of the Catalan Republic is the expression of the will of the people of Catalonia to break with the Monarchy. It is the result of a permanent and massive popular mobilization (demos of over a million for 5 years) , which, until  now, has forced the governments of the Generalitat Catalan Govt to apply the popular mandate. The regime of the transition, which Franco left “tied up and well tied up “ (by his legacy) is in its most serious crisis, cracked and may not survive. Activist Facing 21 Years for Turning Off Keystone Pipeline’s Valve

      from Creative Resistance

Foster says he deliberately broke the law by turning off a valve of the Keystone pipeline in North Dakota because he felt action was necessary.

In October of last year, the group Climate Direct Action turned off a valve on the Keystone Pipeline. Last week, activist Michael Foster was convicted for being involved in the action.

If North Dakota courts, where he is being tried now, find him guilty, he could be facing up to 21 years in prison. The sentencing is set for January.

‘If we don’t stop, we can’t correct … it will be too late for this generation.’ – Michael Foster, activist

Despite that hefty prison sentence hanging over his head, the former mental health counsellor from Seattle is still speaking out because he says he wasn’t allowed to tell his full side at his trial. Continue reading “Activist Facing 21 Years for Turning Off Keystone Pipeline’s Valve”

All Authoritarians Condemn Catalonia : Anarchists call for Revolution

Seems like every State and Authoritarian on the planet is virulently against Catalans complaining about 500 years of macho Spanish colonialism.  Of course, because their very own ‘cash cow’ populations could go copy-cat. Rebellion is brewing everywhere as wealth is funneled ever more to the tiny hierarchical elite.

The Spanish Right, unreformed, rabid and clerical have wallowed in repressive robbery and mass murder for centuries. But recently some of the tens of thousands of politicians have been caught with their greedy fat fingers in the public cash box.

No prison, no punishment, of course, but the far right PP almost got voted out. And one way they could keep power was by BLAMING THE CATALANS. For 5 years we have suffered an incessant racist campaign against these hospitable and long suffering people. And now provoking a tidal wave of racist and sexist male violence against them.

Until finally… We want back the democratic Republic your military took from us by murder and massacre. We don’t want your King, appointed by a fascist dictator, or your Constitution, agreed only under the threat of 40 more years of total repression.

Hopefully the blind authoritarianism of the stomping PP nationalists will be the death throes of the imperial mentality,. If not the Catalans will resist, the debts won’t be paid, and the entire economic House of Cards  could tumble down.

Then maybe we can build something better in Iberia.

New Joint Declaration from Anarchist Trade Unions

viaJulius Gavroche, with thanks……..  The government of Catalonia declares its independence from Spain; the Spanish government in response dismisses the Catalan government, assumes direct control of the region and declares regional elections for the 21st of December.  What happens from hereon in is unknown.  Below is a statement from the country’s principal anarchist labour unions before the unfolding of events

The undersigned organisations, national labour unions, share our preoccupation with the situation in Catalonia, because of the State repression unleashed, because of the decrease in rights and freedoms that this presupposes and will presuppose, and because of the growth of a rancid nationalism that again shows its face in a great part of the country. Portugal: The fear of contagion: Okupation and the Quashing of Dissent

by Julius Gavroche      News of an okupation echoes loudly in portugal, for the event is today rare and the okupy movement is comparatively modest and weak (in comparison to the neighbour spain, for instance).

Legislation in the country makes eviction relatively easy and authorities are quick to act, and this in the wake of weak social movements which in other contexts render interventions by the State more difficult.

If the longest surviving okupied social centre is the 17 year old C.O.S.A. of Setúbal, it is now threatened with eviction, due to a legal action by the owners of the building, their appetites no doubt being wetted by the exploding real-estate values in the city.

Otherwise, however significant other recent okupations have been (most notably, Es.Col.A da Fontinha), they have also all been short lived.

On the 14th of October, an okupation and the creation of a new social centre (Espaço Okupado Travêssa) was announced in the northern city of Porto, only to be evicted on the 16th. (Indymedia)

If we speak of the event, it is first in solidarity with those who endeavoured to create the space and who suffered the violent police action of the 16th of October.

It is also to remind us of the importance of okupied social centres, as expressions of direct action and mutual aid, as schools of self-management, as points of confluence for broader struggles, and as protests against the reign of State supported Capital; all of which pushes authorities to crush these initiatives as quickly as possible.

We publish below, in translation,  the original statement of the Espaço Okupado Travêssa.  May the example be repeated …

We decided to occupy a space that had been abandoned years ago, where we could manage ourselves, without hierarchies or delegations, without asking for authorisation from institutions and without negotiating with them, thereby rejecting any type of authority as an obstacle to free individual and collective expression, and to free social relations.

At a moment when Porto is devoured by pharaonic works of social cleansing, it is fundamental to affirm that we don’t want to be elegant and servile Portuenses, whose only function is to be part of a menu to be consumed by real-estate companies, tourist agencies desirous of a clean and picturesque environment, stripped bare of any social conflict.

For this reason, we chose to organise ourselves on the basis of the contradictions that emerge from the profound daily changes of our city.

Through the practice of occupation, we want to express a different way of seeing life and human relationships, breaking with the corporate logic of profit, with national and international vultures guided and counselled by local hyenas who legitimate them and who succeed in imposing them in all the corners of life.

We want to self-manage our lives, our spaces, our necessities, in a way different from the canons of the current system.

And we want to retake our neighbourhoods whose people are, everyday, brutally expelled and swept away by the factory of tourism.  Let this occupation also be a response that produces a creative conflict against the dominant ratification of the city as shop window, as false, made for quick and temporary entertainment.

We want a space where we can address debates and film projections on the themes that are most dear to us, to pursue questions such as the anti-capitalist, anti-racist, anti-sexist and anti-authoritarian critiques, to organise struggles outside political parties, labour unions, or other types of institutional organisations, whose existence serve more to whitewash legal theft than to struggle for its victims.

We want to experiment collectively on the basis of the values of solidarity and sharing, reading books in a library open to all, practicing sports or watching a film without the price of a ticket, celebrating and sharing ideas and practices in horizontal assemblies … moments that in this capitalist world can find no space.

A laboratory where any person can realise their projects and ideas freely.

We want to involve the whole neighbourhood and the city with these activities, through solidarity and mutual aid, but without any charitable intention.  So that this space is, in other words, returned to the collectivity, freed from uselessness and abandonment; a place where there is no profit to be made.

To the city designated “European Best Destination”, with a beautified centre that hides the daily poverty of its people, we want to oppose another city, built of solidarity, social conflict and cultural initiatives, beyond the capitalist logic that this system wishes to impose upon us.

Porto | Okupa da Travessa. Últimas informações. Actualização

Os okupantes foram levados para a esquadra do heroísmo após a investida da policia na okupa da Travessa dos Campos. See Translation

Each musical note from a load speaker at a concert, each word pronounced in an assembly, each bit of energy spent in the construction of an occupied space has as its objective to support the struggles of those who imagine a society without prisons, physical or mental.

For this reason, this occupation could not but send greetings of solidarity to the C.O.S.A. (Casa Ocupada de Setúbal Autogestionada) which at this moment celebrates 17 years of existence, while the noose of eviction tightens, as well as greetings and a prosperous future to the À da Maxada and the Assembleia de Ocupação de Lisboa.

A self-managed and occupied space does not sell dreams of freedom – it tries to materialise them and expand them.

What we take is simply a part of what belongs to us!
