Local Activist on Iran protests: Bread. Jobs. Freedom.

Protest in Zanjan, December 30 2017

https://libcom.org/news/     We are publishing this dispatch direct from an activist in Iran, trying to make some sense of the current wave of protests. The situation is moving so quickly, and the protests sufficiently diffuse, that anyone claiming to know what will happen can be disregarded. The contribution we can make is to ask questions, to look at what has happened, is happening; and only from that speculate about what might happen in the future. We hope that more will contribute to this effort in the coming days and weeks.

We have lightly edited this piece for translation issues and to add footnotes.

From Armin Sadeghi, January 4th 2018.

Are we waging a revolution in Iran? Perhaps not. But if we perceive the essence of a revolution as “the abolition of fear”, then everyone has heard (and seen) the Iranian people shouting with no fear that “the emperor has no clothes”.It is hard to anticipate beyond this, since the conflicting social forces have not yet fully unfolded; and it is almost impossible to grasp a revolution as it’s being made. But, we can speculate on the situation, just as Marx wrote to Ruge1: “The internal difficulties seem to be almost greater than the external obstacles. Attacks on Qatar were okayed by US ‘for selling Gas in Yuan not US dollars’

Image result for Qatar has conducted over $86 billion worth of transactions in Chinese Yuan

info from… Follow The Money                 Over the past two years, Qatar has conducted over $86 billion worth of transactions in Chinese Yuan and has signed other agreements with China that encourage further economic cooperation.

This is incredibly important because Qatar shares its major natural gas reserve with Iran, and Iran also conducts its oil-related business deals with China in Yuan. Iran signed deals with France’s Total, a multinational integrated oil and gas company, to develop this project.

If Iran and Qatar continue down this path, the U.S.’ self-asserted hegemony over the world’s financial markets will directly come under attack.

Until now the biggest losers are the 2 million immigrant workers who have been treated as slave labour, working in 40C degree heat,  but any real war on the oil and gas fields could wreck the world economy.

Remember that Hillary Clinton’s leaked emails confirmed that the U.S. and France were so concerned with attacking Muammar Gaddafi (and destroying Libya to this day) not out of humanitarian concern, but rather, out of fear of his plan to unite Africa under a single gold-backed currency that would be used to buy and sell oil on the global markets, thus sabotaging their lucrative petrodollar monopoly

Remember that in 2000, Saddam Hussein announced he would sell Iraqi oil in euros, and the Guardian reported in 2003 that Iraq had actually netted a handsome profit in doing so — at least until the U.S. invaded not long after and immediately switched the sale of oil back to U.S. dollars. Solidarity with Fearless Feminists in Iran .. A Short History of the Movement

Genealogies of the feminist fightback in Iran

It is nearly impossible to read any article about Iranian women and not spend the entire time rolling your eyes. Historically, the Western media has tended to make liberal use of Orientalist and infantilizing depictions of Iranian women as, alternatively, trapped in the harems of their turbaned overseers (a historically pre-1979 trope applied liberally to all Middle Eastern women) or militantly crazed and clad in black “traditional garb” (a post-1979 trope specific to Iranian, and later Islamist, women).

Policies that discriminate against women in Iran are one of the main factors of mobilization of the feminist movement to demand more rights. Consider this journey from the regime of the Shah until the present day…

“As I am dressed now, showing my neck without the veil-strap under the chin,  would be unthinkable ten years ago.” she says and encourages us to pay attention to the young people in Tehran who subtly or blatantly defy the ultra strict dress code required, rebel against any ideology (.a blouse that does not cover the buttocks, a handkerchief pulled back so that it shows her hair, hair cut short or shaved ..) .

I don’t want to chime in to all the Western finger pointing at Iran. but women like the one pictured do deserve full support and admiration.

How much power and struggle we can glimpse in these symbolic gestures. For example Niloufar, 29,on Friday night, leaving her apartment in northern Tehran wearing pirate pants and a jacket with three quarters length sleeves, ready to receive looks of disapproval and weaving complicity. Iranians warm up winter with ‘Kindness Walls’ free shops

kind

A new movement in Iran is making sure the nation’s homeless stay cozy as frigid winter temperatures set in

Iranians may not observe Christmas, but as much of the West celebrates this year’s holiday season many in Iran are also embracing the spirit of giving, one wall at a time.

The “Kindness Wall” movement — in which ordinary citizens hang clothes on walls as donations for the homeless during Iran’s cold winter — is picking up across the country, which has long struggled under the weight of economic sanctions imposed by the West over Tehran’s nuclear program.

It’s not clear how or where the movement started, but Iranian newspaper Hamshahri said it likely sprang from one man’s goodwill gesture in a neighborhood in the northwestern city of Mashhad. Continue reading “Iranians warm up winter with ‘Kindness Walls’ free shops”

Good News At Last! .. Syria Bombing to be Cancelled?

1235308_206843849483180_604843799_n

Great news! By just 13 votes the Brit Parliament voted against bombing Syria.

This, along with Arab League failure to endorse, French backing off and a snowballing anti-war campaign at home MAY BE ENOUGH to stop the US attacking Syria.

Bad news for US corporations and the arms market. Bad news for the Israelis, for all the imperialist, racist and sexist warmongers who get hot on the idea of blowing people to pieces for their own profit and prestige. Continue reading “Good News At Last! .. Syria Bombing to be Cancelled?”
