Arab Women-centered Films Are Not Just About Women

Too often, we are overwhelmed with woeful tales, painful memoirs and worn analyses of Arab/Muslim women. Most depictions, whether we’re besieged in a war, or if we’re just trying to get by making small advances like women anywhere, we are invariably portrayed as hapless victims. We’re in need of succor, or reform, or rescue.

Writings by our own talented authors are popular if they reveal  exploitations or despairs or escapes. These feed enlightened sisters abroad who may feel better about themselves when they can pity others.

Four women meet in Dar Joued (a women’s prison) on the eve of Independence day. From different ages and social conditions, they are condemned to live together under the authority and injustice of their jailer: Jaida. They share memories from the outside world, and also the joy, emotions and torment of their daily lives in Dar Jouad.

Below I reproduce an unattributed translation from the French anarchist publication, Le Monde Libertaire, of an interview with the Tunisian anarchist feminist group, Feminism Attack! I follow that with an earlier report about the Tunisian feminist activist, Amina Sboui, leaving the Femen group and declaring herself an anarchist. Femen is a radical feminist group founded in Ukraine which has captured some media attention through its topless protests where Femen activists paint various political slogans across their chests.

After spent a night in a police station in Istanbul, sextremist the participant of the protest “Erdogan from Istanbul to Kabul” was deported from Turkey by plane to Paris. Together with forced deportation there is a  ban  for entrance into Turkey for the activist for one year. This is already fifth ban to entry Turkey for FEMEN Activists.

FEMEN promises to Erdigan to find many ways to get around of his repressive laws and continue the fight with the Turkish people against Islamism and for secular and humanistic Turkey. Erdogan, get out to Kabul!

Today at 4 pm local time it will be press conference with FEMEN sextremists in the training center of extremism in Paris by the address Rue Leon 35.

Support Femen prisoners on Trial 12th June.. Amina /Marguerite/Josephine/Pauline

12th of June four FEMEN activists who are imprisoned in Tunisia will face the trial by Sharia Law. They are prosecuted because they have done the protest against the islamisation of the countries of Arab spring and for women’s freedom. Young women are threatened to stay in jail for 6 years(for Amina), 1-2 years(for Josephine, Pauline and Marguerite).

3 Femen arrested and held in Free Amina protest + Nazis attack Femen

latest 31 May:, Tunisia — A court convicted Amina (Sboui) , for carrying an “incendiary object” and fined her $182. She remains in custody pending more serious charges.The 3 Femen supporters arrested still remain in custody and will appear before a judge today, Friday, when they may be charged.

Standing on a wall in front of the railings outside the courthouse, the women, two French and the other German, shouted: “Free Amina,” in support of a young Tunisian woman detained while protesting against hardline Islamists and awaiting trial on Thursday.

“Breast Feed Revolution” read graffiti on the women, who wore only denim micro shorts and black shoes, and “Femen Extremist” was daubed on their backs.

It’s been a hectic couple of days for Femen: their Paris headquarters is under siege by 300 neo-Nazis seeking revenge for the events of two weekends ago, when they interrupted a yearly nationalist gathering to commemorate Joan of Arc. And last week, they found out that Tunisian Femen activist Amina Tyler, the 19-year-old who was drugged and given a virginity test after posting topless protest pictures of herself on Facebook, might be facing up to two years and six months in jail. Help Femen activist Amina, ‘condemned to Death’ for protest Photo

Radical Tunisian islamists represented by Imam Adel Almi call for death penalty by stones for young tunisian girl, who took a naked picture of herself and posted on Facebook to support FEMEN movement. 26th of February a Tunisian woman, Amina Tyler, sent an email to FEMEN with attached photo of herself in the style of FEMEN with written message on her body  “Fuck your morals!”.
The picture was posted on fan pages of FEMEN. Then Amina has created a fan page FEMEN Tunisia to support the movement from her country. Today the information about death threats to Amina from islamists was spread by mass medias, the call for death penalty was made the by Tunisian political figure and leader of the Association of centrists reforms Adel Almi. After getting info about threats for Amina FEMEN activists tried to get in touch with the tunisian supporter by phone, but the phone is switched off.
