Sakar martyred in isolation protest

Sakar’s doctors announced that he lost his life in a hospital in Duisburg this morning.

Before his protest, Ugur Sakar left a note pointing out the isolation imposed upon Ocalan, the hunger strike protests and the German state’s pressure.

Sakar had saluted the hunger strikes in his letter and written, “The PKK has taught us the philosophy that ‘resistance is life’. It is our duty to resist injustice, wherever we are.”

Sakar had criticized the silence of European countries and protested the Committee for the Prevention of Torture’s (CPT) silence in the face of the hunger strikes.

Sakar had concluded his letter with: “I condemn the German state’s police brutality and political pressure agains Kurds. I invite each and every Kurd to fight for a free life, rather than living as a slave.

We will prevail. Let us, as a people, gather around the friends who gathered for the Leader in their hunger strikes.”

Next to sacrifice everything was  Zehra Saglam,
Inmate in eastern Turkey kills herself in protest of treatment of PKK leader

Twenty-three year old Zehra Sağlam, who had been behind bars for three years, began a hunger strike on Dec. 16, joining more than 160 Kurdish prisoners and several pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) lawmakers protesting the isolation of Öcalan, the site said.

Sağlam is the 3rd Turkish convict to have died behind bars while protesting the treatment of Öcalan since the hunger strike began last year.

Captured by Turkey in 1999, Öcalan is serving a life sentence on Imralı Island, where he has been barred from meeting his lawyers and been permitted limited family visits since the collapse of a peace process between the state and the PKK, in mid-2015.

The death of Sağlam follows those of inmates Zülküf Gezen ve Ayten Beçet earlier this month.

The 5th victim was Medya Cinar, 24 and a native of Cimenli in Margik, was found dead in a prison cell in Mardin on March 25, 2019.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Medya Cinar, a Kurd protesting the Turkish state, was found dead in her cell in Mardin E Type Prison on Monday.

“Today we learned that a woman, jailed in Mardin Prison and known as Cinar, has committed suicide,” read a statement from the HDP on Twitter.

At least five people have died by suicide in the past two weeks protesting the actions of the Turkish state. They include Ugur Sakar, Zulkuf Guzer, Ayten Becet, Zehra Saglam, and Cinar.

Some of the suicides have led to public demonstrations.

“The number of those [people] who have committed suicide for protesting the aggravation of isolation against Mr. Ocalan is increasing,” the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) statement added.

Cinar, 24, was arrested in May 2016 and charged with links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is banned in the country. Justice has been slow for hundreds in Turkey who claim they are being held as political prisoners for around three years.

Right now over over 300 people, mostly Kurdish political prisoners in Turkey , are on indefinite hunger strike, and many of them are reaching the stage of permanent health damage and death.
They are striking not to protest their obvious innocence or the shocking conditions, but for the right of their leader, Ocalan, to have contact with the outside world.
Ocalan in the past has declared long ceasefires with the Turkish State rejecting terrorism and separatism  in favour of ‘municipal anarchist’ communal ideas and feminist emancipation which have swept through the 15 million Kurdish population.
That seems a strange thing to die for, but Ocalan in the past has declared ceasefires with the Turkish State which have lasted years
Former HDP deputy Leyla Guven has been on hunger strike since November in protest over Ocalan’s jail conditions.

Prominent Kurdish politicians such as Sebahat Tuncel, the co-chair of the Democratic Regions Party, and former HDP deputy Selma Irmak, have been on hunger strike for more than 60 days.

The HDP’s current deputies, Dersim Dag and Tayyip Temel, also joined the hunger strike 10 days ago.

Gulan Cagin Kaleli, a spokesperson for the Platform to Track Hunger Strikes, claimed on Friday that there were over 300 prisoners now on hunger strike over the issue.

The PKK is designated as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, and still by default by the European Union  and the United States.

Leyla Guven, an HDP MP currently on hunger strike in protest at Ocalan’s ongoing solitary confinement, recently told pro-PKK Denge Welat radio: “Now our friends carry out sacrifice actions … I bow to their actions.”

“But I say that let everyone know that whenever one friend commits such actions, I lose one part of my life.”

She urged others not to commit suicide.

Turkey will hold municipal and provincial elections on March 31. Erdogan has complete dictatorial power and can rule by decree, but his AKP party could lose ground despite their racist campaign , due to the present economic recession.

An HDP alliance including most Kurdish parties has campaigned on the election being a referendum against the Justice and Development Party (AKP) dominated government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The HDP deny links to the PKK. The former performed well in last year’s presidential and parliamentary election — passing the 10-percent threshold to enter parliament with 67 seats, eight more than in the previous election.

Additionally in many Kurdish cities and municipalities the AKP appointed trustees to govern and jailed many elected deputies.. The HDP wants to retake those posts through the election.

Catalunya: #StopVox. United Anti Fascist and Racist demonstration against Vox in Barcelona today 5.00pm

By Infolibre

The manifestation, described as transversal, will be next Saturday 23 and under the slogan “Stop Vox”.

200 entities will manifest Barcelona on Saturday, called by the platform Unitat against the racisme i feixisme against Vox, which they see as the current exponent of racism and xenophobia in Spain. The manifestation, described as transversal, will be next Saturday 23 and under the slogan “Stop Vox”.

The march, scheduled for 17:00 on Saturday 23 March, starting from the Jardinets de Gràcia, will drop by Passeig de Gràcia to the confluence with the Gran Vía, where various interventions will be made and there will be a musical performance.

At a press conference Monday, the member Unitat against feixisme i el racisme David Karvala explained that this is a worldwide protest played in several cities in Spain and countries which have decided to focus the demonstration in Vox because ” in the Spanish state, the far right now has its name and surnames, it is not something abstract “.

“Now we have to point out Vox, and this does not mean it’s the only problem. Pablo Casado (PP) I do not know what’s wrong, but eliminating Vox I think we eliminate the temptations of others, “he assured.

Karvala has linked the rise of Vox to an increase in racist, homophobic and sexist attacks: “The fascist bully people was once an isolated nutcase and now has a party with 10% of the vote and this gives grounds to commit aggression”.

So, he called to point out to members of Vox to end his success as happened with defending Platform for Catalonia (PXC): “In 2015 the city was eliminated them from all municipalities where they had strong groups. They went from 67 to 8 councilors and those who remained were not indicated. “Image result for anarquistes antifascistes contra Vox

He also pointed out that the protests that will be played in several cities of the world will serve to condemn the recent massacre that took place in Christchurch (New Zealand) against the Muslim community. Orso killed by ISIS.. But Lives Always in our Hearts

ON MONDAY morning came the devastating news that an Italian YPG volunteer, Lorenzo “Orso” Orsetti, had been killed by an Isis ambush in Baghouz, the small town on the Deir Ezzor front where the remnants of the Isis caliphate are surrounded.

Orsetti, also known by his nom-de-guerre Tekoser Piling, had been in northern Syria since September 2017 when he travelled from his hometown in Florence, Tuscany to defend the revolution in Rojava led by the Kurds in northern Syria, one he described as “the most beautiful revolution in the world,” “the closest thing I’ve ever found to my ideals and it is a pleasure and an honour to take part.”Clarifying his motivation for taking up arms in Rojava, he said that it wasn’t because he liked war or wanted fame, that he didn’t have any mystifications or delusions, simply that “freedom cannot exist without taking risks.”

According to countless stories, Orso (“bear” in Italian) was an incredibly brave and selfless fighter, and whilst he always impressed on friends and comrades the need to act in an altruistic manner in his dispatches from the front line, he never boasted or exalted his own activity.

He never even told people how, whilst fighting in the hills of Afrin against the Turkish/FSA invasion in spring 2018, with defeat in sight, he refused to be evacuated with the rest of his internationalist unit, insisting on staying with the civilians to defend them from the invasion at huge risk to himself until civilians themselves were evacuated.

Fighting in the hills of Afrin in incredibly difficult conditions surrounded by jihadists and bombarded day and night by Turkey’s air force (equipped by both Britain and Italy), his dispatches from the front line sounded like epic tales of guerilla warfare from the partisan resistance, swapping the olive tree-filled mountains between Florence and Bologna for those of the north-west Syrian Kurdish enclave.

Orso came from a very ordinary family in Rifredi, a working-class neighbourhood in Florence filled with monuments and plaques to the anti-fascist partisans, many of whom hailed from the area in which he grew up. Bored by successive menial service jobs, mainly as a waiter and chef, he looked to Rojava as an escape from the drudgery and trappings of individualistic capitalist society. Anna is with us, we fight on! Bristol Antifascists Demo

Bristol Antifascists are joining with other radical groups and comrades in Bristol for a demonstration on 16th March to remember our amazing and inspiring comrade Anna Campbell.

We also want to show our shared commitment to all that she stood for and towards the better world she fought so hard for.

Here’s some of the struggles Anna gave so much to and which we carry on:

Anarchism, Anti capitalism, Feminism, Anti Patriarchy, Queer struggle, Antifascism, Animal liberation, Hunt sabotage, Prison abolition, Defendant solidarity, Ecological struggle, Eviction resistance, Direct action…Join us! Meet 2pm near the International Brigades plaque in Castle Park, between the church and the river.

15th March 2019 marks the first anniversary of when we lost Anna Campbell. Anna went out to Rojava, the Kurdish region of Syria, to join the Kurdish struggle against fascism.

She was inspired by the revolution because of the politics of direct democracy, feminism and environmentalism and fought with the YPJ (Women’s Protection Units), who have been at the forefront in the fight against ISIS.

Anna was killed by a Turkish airstrike whilst defending the city of Afrin.

Nth America, news roundup/Podcast #63: Like a House of Cards

By   It’s Going Down

Welcome, to This Is America, March 9th, 2019.

We have an amazing show/transcript for you this week. First, we talk with someone from PopMob about a recent event in Portland that brought together close to 600 people in response to a series of anti-queer and anti-trans attacks.

Police Rapists Go Free .

In New York, the DA has decided to drop charges against several police officers that raped and attacked Anna Chambers. Anarchists have been a continuous part of the struggle and shown solidarity for months.

In a statement Metropolitan Anarchist Coordinating Council wrote:

Community Safety

We then talk with two people involved in the newspaper project, Salvo, out of Los Angeles, who is currently fundraising to expand their project. We talk about the importance of having counter-information projects, the recent LA teacher’s strike, and more.

But first, let’s get to the news!

Living and Fighting

The Oakland teacher’s strike is over, with many reporting that the teacher’s union gave in to major concessions. Many are now mobilizing to fight a series of proposed school closures. Check out a series of critical articles on the strike on LibCom and Commune Magazine

Meanwhile, the teacher’s rebellion continues, with:

A week after Kentucky teachers conducted a job action to protest legislation attacking pensions and public schools, teachers in the state’s largest school district in the Louisville area have staged two days of sickouts in defiance of the unions. On Thursday, Jefferson County Public School teachers were joined by school workers in Meade, Oldham, and Bullitt counties, resulting in the closure of hundreds of schools.

In Louisville, the teacher actions are organized by a group completely autonomous of the teacher’s unions.

Chelsea jailed

Supporters of Chelsea Manning rallied in DC recently in support of the whistle-blower who “provided archives of secret military documents to WikiLeaks in 2010, [and] was taken into custody on Friday after a federal judge found her in contempt for refusing to testify before a grand jury that is investigating the anti-secrecy group.” A support fund has been set up here. In a statement Chelsea said:

“In solidarity with many activists facing the odds, I will stand by my principles. I will exhaust every legal remedy available. My legal team continues to challenge the secrecy of these proceedings, and I am prepared to face the consequences of my refusal.”

School Strike…

Demonstrations continue in Sacramento, California, with students taking a lead, launching school walkouts and strikes, which have marched across the city building as more students walk out of school and join in them.

Anti Racist Victory

In Chapel Hill, North Carolina, two Silent Sam protesters had their charges dropped, while another one still faces some charges. Check out a statement from Take Action Chapel Hill here.

In major anti-pipeline news, the tail end of the Dakota Access Pipeline, known as the Bayou Bridge pipeline, which for the last two years has been resisted by the L’eau Est La Vie Camp, is now being delayed in construction “indefinitely.” According to Last Real Indians:

Energy Transfer Partners may have lied to its shareholders when it told investors the Bayou Bridge pipeline will be fully functional this month.

According to reports from Louisiana residents who frequent the Atchafalaya Basin, work on the project – which was first projected to be complete in 2017 – has been halted indefinitely due to high water levels.

Included in this program is a recent update from the Bayou Bridge resistance camp, which will also give an update. Not to be outdone, two other massive energy projects, the Mountain Valley Pipeline and the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, two projects have have written about and covered on this podcast, are also in jeopardy and are far behind schedule.

Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley Pipeline Resistance

As Forbes wrote:

Two proposed long-haul natural gas transportation projects—the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP) and the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP)—are now in peril. That’s the result of a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, Virginia in late February.

The future of both projects remains up in the air, while resistance in the forms of tree-sits and continued resistance on the ground shows no signs of stopping.

Keystone XL pipeline> Criminalising Protests

In some not so good news however, in South Dakota in preparation for the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline:

Republican Gov. Kristi Noem’s [introduced a bill] to curb violent pipeline protests [and it] has flown through both chambers of the Legislature. Noem dropped Senate Bills 189 and 190 on Monday. On Wednesday, a joint hearing was held on the bills. By Thursday, the Legislature suspended rules in order to pass both bills out of both chambers on the same day. SB 189 establishes civil penalties for “riot boosting,” or contributing money to or encouraging protesters who engage in violence.

Of the bill, journalist Will Parish wrote on Twitter:

If you “encourage” someone to protest (“riot”) against the KXL pipeline, SD now wants to fine you. “The governor’s office coordinated with representatives of TransCanada, law enforcement, local governments and state agencies to draft the bills.”

Alt Right Leaks Victory

Finally, the Alt-Right white nationalist group, Identity Evropa is having a bad week. Media collective Unicorn Riot released a series of Discord chat lots giving antifascists across the country access to a treasure trove of information, which kicked off a new round of doxxing, job firings, and more. The leaks show many connections between local GOP and College Republican circles and show a desire by members of IE to infiltrate the political establishment as much as possible.Image result for Identity Evropa

This weekend is Identity Evropa’s yearly conference, which is supposed to be held in secret, yet the information was also released. The group is currently meeting at a lake resort in Kentucky, and then is supposed to hold some sort of action later in the weekend.

Soon after, the leader of Identity Evropa, Patrick “McLovin” Casey announced that the group would reform under the banner of American Identity Movement, or AIM, which of course is the same initials as the American Indian Movement, which still exists to this day. Whether this rebranding will result in a split within the organization or just a reboot, remains unclear.

Map of Shame: Mass Graves of Fascist-Catholic Regime still not Opened

Map:  All the known mass graves of the hundreds of thousands of victims of the fascist uprising and the Franco regime.

Spain has done little to give closure to the atrocities perpetrated during the dictatorship. Instead, as Alex W. Palmer explains in a recent article, Spain implemented a political agreement known as the “Pact of Forgetting.” 200,000 people were executed in the dictatorship—mostly by the fascist forces, still more died during the bombings of cities and towns in Spain, and some 370,000 were held in concentration camps.

Spain has exhumed the remains of only 9,000 victims of the long fascist-catholic regime in the last 19 years. A report urges the government to formalize an urgent plan to recover up to 25,000 more bodies in the next five years. This will depend on whether a far right coalition wins the April 2019 election.

In Paterna, some of the bones of 100 victims  found in graveyard 112 are cracked, which could mean that the people executed at the site were tortured. According to the AP’s Parra, archaeologists have asked authorities to launch a criminal investigation into the victims’ violent deaths.
