Spain’s supermarket expropriations spread

Carrefour expropriation

Supermarket expropriations have extended to other parts of Spain, following the example of ‘Robin Hood’ mayor José Manuel Sánchez Gordillo in Andalusia.  A store of the global  supermarket chain Carrefour in the town of Merida in the western region of Extremadura was hit Friday by 50 members of the Platform for Basic Income in Extremadura. The regional leader of the radical United Left coalition Pedro Escobar backed what he described as a ‘symbolic’ action  that would ‘draw attention to, and provoke reflection about the extreme situation that many families are in. ‘ Escobar observed that some families were in such dire straits that they were actually going hungry. Millions Against Monsanto: The Food Fight of Our Lives
By Brie Mazurek     The Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture
Farmer David Little of Little Organic Farmgrows potatoes without irrigation in a dry part of California. This week, as the nation grapples with the worst drought in decades, the USDA added more than 218 counties to its list of natural disaster areas, bringing the total to 1,584 — more than half of all U.S. counties. Farmers in the Midwest and Great Plains have been the hardest hit, but the drought is a growing reality for farmers across the country, including California. While the secretary of agriculture won’t comment on the drought’s link to climate change, it’s at the forefront of everyone’s mind, and as global warming unfolds, knowledge of dryland agriculturewill become increasingly valuable.David Little of Little Organic Farm has had to adapt to water scarcity in California’s Marin and Sonoma counties, where most farmers and ranchers rely on their own reservoirs, wells, and springs, making them particularly vulnerable in years with light rainfall. Through a technique known as dry farming, Little’s potatoes and squash receive no irrigation, getting all of their water from the soil. Continue reading “permaculture.. Farming without water”

Capitalist collapse: Shops looted for food kitchens

UPDATE..10/08– Five members of the SAT Union have now been arrested for the supermarket robberies. ”Not content with wholesale corruption (hundreds have been charged with robbing public funds) , destroying services and abolishing social security payments for longer term unemployed, the rightwing PP politicians have ordered the jailing of those who try to mitigate the social emergency..”

LEADERS of a workers’ union in southern Spain staged a massive raid on two supermarkets on Tuesday, filling at least 30 trolleys with staple foodstuffs to give to the poor.
They gave their entire haul to local ‘food banks’ which supply hampers to families who no longer have any income to be able to feed themselves. The Sindicato Andaluz de Trabajadores (SAT), or workers’ union of the Andalucía region, staged an uninvited supermarket sweep on Mercadona in Écija (Sevilla) and Carrefour in Arcos de la Frontera (Cádiz). Mayor of Marinaleda (Sevilla), Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo, is thought to have been involved in the Mercadona raid.
The regional minister for the interior has given the green light for all parties involved who are found to be arrested and tried.

Because there’s no other solution .. recipe for Social Revolution!

‘The police are actually a tiny minority’ Greece 2011

Statement by members of The Alternative – Alternative Red and Green in La Mancha … July 27, 2012

The crisis not only continues but deepens, it becomes worse every day. And there is no escape from capitalism, because this system is in terminal crisis. Just look how governments (all, then and now) do not know what to do, how they lie every day saying that in a few months or years we will see how the cycle changes . But all we’ve seen is sinking living conditions, and the consequences paid by the vast majority. Our lives deteriorate and we lose the social gains that cost us so many struggles. And which we paid for with our work and our taxes, because power has given us nothing. Continue reading “Because there’s no other solution .. recipe for Social Revolution!”
