enjoyable sex, chosen motherhood, I CHOOSE, where, how and when!!

Last Monday a feminist picket was called at the Health Ministry in Madrid to protest exclusion of single women and lesbians from health benefits, the latest neo-fascist law, as well as new restrictions on abortion rights, ,exclusion of violence victims with less than 24  hrs in hospital from statistics, closure of hospirals, etc etc. Men were invited.

Well over 500 people showed up, to a festive atmosphere, but the pòlice aggressively identified people, harrassing old people and then attacked without warning, causing many injuries. The press were attacked first, so there are few images of the violence. Continue reading “Lesbians/singles excluded from Health Benefits, police attack demo”

Cristy C. Road’s “Spit and Passion”

cristy c roadRead a F*cking Book: Cristy C. Road‘s “Spit and Passion”

GabriellePosted bySpit and Passion by Cristy C. Road is a graphic memoir about the anxious, fragile and formative moments between childhood and adolescence. Written with the wisdom of hindsight and illustrated with the often-gruesome imperfections that Road’s art is famous for, her memoir centers around her newly felt queerness and how her love affair with Green Day (yes, the band) saved her from the pain of being a weirdo.

New Feminist Music: 5 videos

Untitled

Top 40 music seems to be undergoing a sea change lately. Cher has a feminist song on the radio and in the club. Neko Case is taking gender identity straight to task. Frank Ocean and Macklemore are topping the charts with songs that carve space for queer-friendly voices in the machismo-drenched worlds of R&B and hip-hop. Ann Powers at NPR declared 2013 “Country Music’s Year of the Woman,” and Jewly Hight at the Nashville Scene pointed out a similar trend last year, of female artists whose sounds still fit the country genre, but whose lyrics and personae push the boundaries of country femininity.

Neko Case with text: "Hell Yeah, Feminist Music!"

All of this points to something big: It’s been a good year for not only women in music, but feminism in music. Continue reading “New Feminist Music: 5 videos”

Patriarchal power: from Witch Dunking to Family Courts

HalfTheWorldsPopulationAccording to a report released by the United Nations World Heath Organization (WHO), 35 percent

of women around the world experience some form of physical or sexual violence, whether by an intimate partner or stranger, and the problem is so widespread that it is now considered a global public health problem.

While legislative actions are commendable, to date these measures have not led to a world free from violence—women continue to be subject to it, the media continues to report it, activists continue to fight against it and we end up in a perpetuating cycle of institutional inertia.

Perhaps we need to look more closely at the history and present day use of Patriarchal Power…..
