KURDISTAN/SYRIA: Anarchists join struggle against ISIS in Kobane

update 27/sept 18.00: US jets have attacked IS forces outside Kobane, ironically aiding anti-capitalist locals.

Istanbul anarchists along other leftists, feminists, and ‘Gezi park types’ have managed to cross over into Syria and the northern town of Kobane which is currently threatened by ISIS.

Vice reported yesterday that ISIS is within 5 miles of the city and are attacking with US military equipment including tanks that outmatches the weapons available to the YPG – Kurdish People’s Protection Units . Vice also reported that “Hundreds of Turkish Kurds are arriving too, sneaking or bribing their way across the border to fight alongside the YPG”

The photo shows a banner of the anarchist group DAF apparently just after the border has been crossed. The statement we were sent says “People are suffering from hunger and thirst, getting ill, getting injured; migrating and dying. They are still fighting in that struggle for existence. People are fighting not for the schemes and strategies around meeting tables, not for income, but for their freedom”

Anarquistas de Istanbul junto otros izquierdistas, feministas y ‘ tipos Gezi Park’ han logrado cruzar a Siria y la ciudad norteña de Kobane que actualmente está amenazado por ISIS.

Vicepresidente informó ayer que ISIS se encuentra a 5 kilómetros de la ciudad y están atacando con equipo militar incluyendo tanques que outmatches las armas disponibles para el YPG – Unidades del Pueblo Kurdo protección. Vicepresidente también informó que “Cientos de kurdos turcos están llegando también, a escondidas o sobornar a su manera a través de la frontera para luchar junto al YPG”

La foto (arriba en la parte en inglés) muestra una pancarta del grupo anarquista DAF aparentemente justo después de cruzar la frontera. La declaración nos mandaron dice “La gente está sufriendo de hambre y sed, enfermar, sufrir lesiones;.. Migrar y morir Ellos todavía están luchando en esa lucha por la existencia La gente no luchan por los esquemas y estrategias en torno a mesas de reunión, no para ingresos, sino por su libertad “

Whip in hand: Emma Goldman’s feminist critique of feminism

Dear old Emma Goldman, throughout her long and prolific career within the anarchist movement of the twentieth century, produced many political texts to which activists return much more frequently than to other anarchist thinkers. Usually these texts are criticized by leftist feminism for being just what they are: anarchist harangues from on the barricade itself. Here we take the thought of Emma Goldman not uncritically as libertarian gospel, but to make it live in your discussion today, and to rescue Emma’s special ability to put her finger right on the spot, in the wound of mainstream feminism of her day, while at the same time opposing the practices of her own fellow militants of the anarchist movement, whip in hand.

Goldman’s texts are always a concern with passion, joy and the sharing of erotic bodies, key concepts of personal fulfillment without which struggle and social revolution can not be successful. Even today these ideas, which in her time were a totally unprecedented and radical innovation, go far beyond the usual conceptualizations of anarchist free love that generally reach only to forming couples but without legal contract. Apparently these ‘anarchists’ have been joined by ‘organised nihilists’ as the police chief becomes increasingly bonkers in attempts to portray outsiders with guns flooding down the state highways to loot and riot. But there are anarchists there and so there should be……THERE ARE NO OUTSIDERS IN THE WORKING CLASS

We’ve recently featured Coopfunding, an Open-Sourced crowdfunding platform designed to “…promote the financing of projects with a social, self managed and cooperative nature.” Today we present a guest article by Enric Duran, one of the developers behind Coopfunding and its parent-project, the Catalan Integral Cooperative, explaining the reasons that led to the creation of Coopfunding. The expansion of crowdfunding in the last few years has been quite vertiginous.

Hundreds of projects have been able to get off the ground around the world coming from very different backgrounds but united in the aim of creating a link between donors and the projects they sponsor.

Crowdfunding, for its practicality and usefulness, has expanded without any ideological limitation and while it served to finance many social projects it has also supported more conventional initiatives based on consumerism and business as meant in the capitalist system.

In this way, more traditional fund raising events like benefit gigs and have been overlooked, and we should take in to account that with the crowdfunding model we are at risk of leaving the financing of social initiative in the hands of unscrupulous business which, through the management of crowdfunding platforms, are making the same profit that any middle man would make in an ordinary business transaction, through the charge of commissions which range between 5% and 10% of the donations received. His name is Enric Duran , but is known as ‘Robin Bank ‘ or ‘ Robin Hood of the Banks ‘ . This Catalan activist, 38 years old, came to illegally obtain half a million euros in bank loans which he then then divided among projects and anti-capitalist movements .

He was charged with several offenses and failed to appear at his trial. He had requested loans from banks with no intention of returning and distributed the cash to a whole range of alternative projects, integral cooperatives, occupied social centers and revolutionary anarchists. . In all, he performed 68 operations in 39 different entities. With dozens of personal loans , he managed to outwit information systems and financial control.
